Caesarstone® Quarz 4230 Shitake

Caesarstone® 4230 Shitake is an engineered quartz stone from the Israeli manufacturer Caesarstone, part of the Concrete series, with a pronounced organic, mineral character. The medium-light taupe-beige base tone is run through with light, mother-of-pearl-like cavities and dark anthracite mineral dots – stylistically an allusion to a honed fossiliferous limestone or an aged coquina limestone with embedded mineral pockets. At ROSSITTIS we fabricate the large-format slabs into kitchen worktops, washstands, wall claddings and made-to-measure interior components with a warm Mediterranean natural stone character.

About Caesarstone® Quarz 4230 Shitake

Background. Caesarstone was founded in 1987 at Kibbutz Sdot Yam in Israel and is regarded as one of the pioneers of industrial engineered quartz slab production. The company produces its slabs in the Bretonstone® vacuum vibration compaction process and has for decades been one of the globally leading brands in this material segment. The variant presented here, 4230 Shitake, comes from the brand's Concrete series (4xxx coding), which in design terms is oriented towards raw, mineral-inflected surfaces with a concrete, limestone and aged stone character.

Material composition. A classic Caesarstone quartz slab consists of around 90–93 % natural quartz (SiO₂), about 7–10 % polymer binder on a polyester resin basis as well as pigments and mineral additives. The organic structures of the Concrete series are produced in the Bretonstone process using differentially pigmented mix batches, which are introduced into the mould in several layers and compacted under vacuum. Quartz has a Mohs hardness of 7 (compared with calcitic marble at Mohs 3) – which makes engineered quartz slabs considerably more scratch-resistant, more acid-resistant and non-porous. In spring 2024, alongside the classic quartz line, Caesarstone launched the Mineral™ line, in which a large proportion of the crystalline quartz has been replaced by other mineral aggregates – this changeover is a direct response to the global discourse on the risk of silicosis during fabrication; the selection documented here, 4230 Shitake, corresponds to the historical quartz mixture.

The 4230 Shitake variant. Shitake is one of the most characterful slabs in the Concrete series. The base tone is a medium-light, slightly warm taupe-beige – similar to the colour of a dried shiitake mushroom or of a light, slightly patinated travertine limestone. Distributed across the base tone are light cavities and lightened areas that appear almost mother-of-pearl-like, along with smaller dark anthracite mineral dots and shadings. The image recalls a honed fossiliferous limestone surface, or an aged coquina limestone whose mineral pockets have been cut open and made visible. The impression is organic, lively and mineral – considerably more characterful than the single-coloured selections of the 2 series or the finely speckled 3 series slabs, without slipping into the dramatic veining of the 6 series slabs.

Format and fabrication. Caesarstone supplies the slabs in the standard format 306 × 144 cm as well as the jumbo format 327 × 162 cm, in thicknesses of 2 and 3 cm; individual lines also in 1.2 cm and 0.6 cm (Caesarstone Slim) for wall claddings and furniture fronts. The slabs can be cut, profiled, drilled and edge-worked with diamond tooling. Standard edges are square, chamfered (V-chamfer, 45°), rounded (R3, R5) and executed profile edges such as bullnose or mitred edge joints for 90° corner connections. The special “C400” surface (Caesarstone's own finely honed texture) gives the slab an additional tactile depth – the cavities and mineral dots also register slightly to the touch and reinforce the natural stone impression.

Thermal and chemical properties. Engineered quartz is considerably more acid-resistant than marble, because the quartz aggregates are themselves inert to acid and the polyester makes up only a small volume fraction. Even so, the following applies: highly concentrated acids (hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric acid) and aggressive industrial chemicals attack the binder. Heat resistance extends to about 150 °C for short periods; hot pots, frying pans or baking trays must never be set down directly on the surface, because direct heat over points can cause discolouration or stress cracks. UV resistance is limited – the slab is clearly conceived as an interior material and should not be permanently installed in fully sunlit conservatories or open loggias.

From these we fabricate kitchen worktops (standard and island), washbasin tops, wall claddings (including kitchen splashbacks and bathroom walls), bar counters, buffet and furniture tops, window sills and skirtings. The warm Mediterranean tone with its organic mineral structure suits rooms with wood (smoked oak, walnut), warm lime-plaster walls, bronze and brass accents and muted matt wall paints.

Comparison. Within the Concrete series, 4230 Shitake sits in the warm spectrum between the cool grey variants (4033 Rugged Concrete) and the distinctly reddish taupe 4023 Topus. Against genuine travertines or coquina limestones, Shitake quotes their mineral-pocket appearance, but remains non-porous, acid-resistant and dimensionally accurate. Against the CTX BasicAgglo marble agglomerates, acid and scratch resistance are considerably higher – Shitake is the right choice for the actual kitchen working surface. Against porcelain with a travertine décor (Laminam, Florim), the slab remains warmer to the touch and less brittle, but is thermally and chemically somewhat less resilient overall.

Warranty and brand. Caesarstone offers the “Caesarstone Forever” lifetime warranty on its slabs in residential applications, with clearly defined care and fabrication conditions. The brand is established across Europe among architects, interior fitters and premium kitchen studios.

Our honest assessment. 4230 Shitake is a choice for clients and architects looking for a warm Mediterranean, fossiliferous-limestone-like appearance with organic depth, without accepting the acid sensitivity of a genuine travertine or limestone. Anyone who wants a clean, pure marble or solid white appearance is better served by other selections – anyone looking for a lively, mineral, warm material with character will find in Shitake a highly individual premium engineered stone.

Caesarstone® Quarz 4230 Shitake is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

A glossy surface with the highest possible degree of colour intensity — the standard finish in the engineered stone and engineered quartz segment. Easy to care for in everyday use and resistant to common household acids. A prestigious choice for kitchen worktops, wall claddings and exposed surfaces with a classic high-gloss character.

Honed C400

A level, matt surface created by fine honing with C400 grit — it appears more restrained than the more colour-intense polished version and is somewhat more maintenance-intensive. A characterful matt alternative for modern kitchen islands and wall claddings where high gloss would be out of place.

Care & fabrication

Cleaning. In everyday use, warm water, a soft cloth or a clean mop and a neutral to slightly alkaline pH cleaner are sufficient. Soapy engineered stone cleaners, mild all-purpose cleaners, mild washing-up foam and special engineered quartz care products are suitable. Caesarstone recommends its own care products (Caesarstone Cleaner) – these are not essential, but well matched. Take up spilt liquids – wine, coffee, juices, oil – promptly in everyday use.

Do not use. Concentrated acids (sulphuric, hydrochloric, nitric acid), concrete and rust removers, paint strippers, oven cleaners, acetone, petrol, thinners, nitro cleaners and very strongly alkaline industrial cleaners are off limits – they can attack the polyester resin. Also avoid chlorine-based bleaches in high concentration. The surface finishes available in stock are listed in the »Finishes« block further down.

Impregnation. A classic natural stone impregnation is not necessary – engineered quartz is inherently dense and non-porous, and water absorption is below 0.05 %. A sealant would tend to show on the surface as a veil.

C400 surface. The finely honed C400 texture reacts somewhat more sensitively to greasy films and visible wiping streaks than the polished variant; isolated water droplets dry less smoothly. We recommend wiping dry promptly with a soft microfibre cloth and occasionally using a special engineered stone cleaner for matt engineered quartz surfaces.

Kitchen. 4230 Shitake is a classic kitchen material. Despite its high material hardness and acid resistance, the following applies: use chopping boards (knife marks can leave the polyester resin matt over time) and use trivets for hot pots and pans – direct heat over points can cause local discolouration. Direct contact with a hot baking tray (above about 150 °C) risks stress cracks. On site, the dishwasher must not run in full contact directly beneath the slab – heat protection is standard practice. On this warm mineral slab, dark stains (red wine, coffee, berry juice) are visually less conspicuous than on a solid white slab; even so, the material is no invitation to leave them standing.

Bathroom. In the bathroom, Shitake can be used as a washstand, wall cladding, bath surround and shower. Do not use anti-limescale sprays and limescale-dissolving bathroom cleaners in high concentration, and wipe standing water away promptly in the shower area so that a limescale film cannot build up. On the warm-toned slab, limescale rims are visible as light shadows – wiping dry daily is advisable.

Outdoors and frost. Not suitable for external construction. Polyester binder yellows under UV radiation, and freeze-thaw cycles can lead to micro defects. Nor is it recommended for permanent use in fully sunlit conservatories or open loggias – Caesarstone explicitly excludes external use and fully sunlit interior surfaces from the warranty.

In the residential sector Caesarstone grants a lifetime warranty against material and manufacturing defects (“Caesarstone Forever”), subject to fabrication and care to standard by certified specialist firms. Is 4230 Shitake suitable for kitchen worktops?

Yes, that is its core domain. Engineered quartz is more acid-resistant and more scratch-resistant than natural marble and marble agglomerates. Even so, the following applies: use chopping boards and trivets for hot pans, because the polyester resin can react sensitively to point loads. Direct heat above about 150 °C can cause discolouration or stress cracks.

Which cleaners may I use?

Warm water, neutral to slightly alkaline stone care products, mild all-purpose cleaners and special Caesarstone care products are permitted. Concentrated acids, concrete and rust removers, paint strippers, oven cleaners and strong solvents such as acetone, petrol or thinners are off limits. Abrasive pads should be avoided. On the C400 variant, regular wiping dry with a soft microfibre cloth is particularly worthwhile.

What warranty does Caesarstone offer?

In the residential sector Caesarstone grants a lifetime warranty (“Caesarstone Forever”) against material and manufacturing defects, subject to fabrication and care to standard.
