The finish determines look, feel and function. An overview of the most common surface treatments.
PolishedPolished
A mirror-smooth, glossy surface. Brings out colour and veining to the fullest – depending on the material, regular aftercare is advisable.
HonedHoned (Geschliffen · Gezoet)
Matt honed, with a velvety feel. More restrained than polished. Elegant understatement for demanding surfaces.
BrushedBrushed (Satin · Rinascimento · Leathered)
A slightly roughened, soft texture created by rotating brushes. Combines a natural look with easy care – the middle ground.
Eco AntikEco Antik (Patinated)
Flamed and brushed several times. The heavier brushing makes it suitable for kitchens as well. For Nero Assoluto Zimbabwe available both colour-treated and untreated.
Flamed & brushedFlamed & brushed
Roughened with an open flame and then brushed. Slip-resistant, with a naturally rough look and a pleasant feel – the flame bursts the minerals open, the brush takes back the sharp edges.
RiverfinishRiverfinish (Waterjet)
The surface is roughened by water pressure. Usually more intense in colour than flamed & brushed – and just as suitable for outdoor use.
LapaturaLapatura (Caress · Reptile)
Brushed and polished – producing a "wet look". Suitable for kitchens as well.
UnfilledUnfilled
The open pores stay visible – always in combination with a surface treatment (polished, honed or brushed). Used mainly for travertine.
FilledFilled
The pores are filled and the surface stays closed – always in combination with a surface treatment (polished, honed or brushed). Used mainly for travertine.
Sandblasted & brushedSandblasted & brushed („Tellergestrahlt")
The surface is sandblasted and then brushed – evenly matt with a soft feel. Used mainly for limestone.
RivenRiven (Natural cleft · Cleft)
A broken or riven surface, exactly as it appears when the stone is split – grippy, close to nature and with no further finishing. Typical of slate, quartzite and certain sandstones; often used for exterior and wall surfaces where slip resistance and an archaic material character are wanted.
We provide samples of every finish on request. Further special treatments (bush-hammered, pointed, chiselled, hand-tooled) we produce for the individual project – just raise it when you request an appointment.
