Petrographically, Onyx Vaniglia is a chemical sedimentary stone formed by the slow precipitation of calcium carbonate from supersaturated lime-bearing spring or cave waters. In caves or watercourses with calmly flowing mineral-rich water, the onyx built up layer by layer over long geological periods — exactly the same process that also forms stalactites and stalagmites in dripstone caves. This layered formation explains the characteristic banded structure of onyx and its high translucency: the material consists of parallel-grown calcite crystal layers that transmit light unusually deeply and softly.
Visually, Onyx Vaniglia is marked by a warm cream-beige to ivory-white ground tone — the marketing name “Vaniglia” / “Vanilla” refers precisely to this calm, warm vanilla tonality, which distinguishes the stone from cooler white onyx variants and from intensely coloured, patterned honey or emerald onyxes. Use as a floor tile is not to be recommended in heavily frequented areas — the low hardness and the acid sensitivity make onyx delicate as a heavily frequented floor covering. For kitchen worktops the stone is suitable only in very carefully maintained design concepts in which the natural formation of patina is accepted as a mark of value; for intensive everyday loading, granites, quartzites or engineered quartz materials should be chosen.

Polished
Polishing is the preferred finish for onyx — the mirror-smooth surface brings out the material's varied colour character in full. The highest possible colour intensity and deep light reflection. Onyx is acid-sensitive and softer against scratches than marble — recommended for wall cladding and designed visible surfaces, less so for worktops.
Care & fabrication
Onyx Vaniglia is a sensitive decorative material and requires careful maintenance. Because of its carbonate composition the stone is acid-sensitive — acidic foods such as lemon juice, vinegar, wine, cola and fruit juices as well as acidic cleaners cause matt etched marks even on brief contact. For daily cleaning, use exclusively warm water with a pH-neutral stone cleaning agent; aggressive household cleaners, abrasive sponges or microfibre cloths with an abrading action are absolutely to be avoided. Take up spilled acidic liquids immediately with clear water. A professional sealing treatment after installation and again every 1 to 2 years is urgently recommended — it reduces the absorption of pigments (red wine, coffee, olive oil) and protects the polished surface against water marks. In bathrooms it is advisable to squeegee off drops of water after showering, since standing water on unsealed spots can lead to discolouration over the long term. For backlit wall claddings the care requirement is low — occasional dusting and careful wiping with a damp cloth is sufficient. On vanity tops and bar counters, gentle cleaning agents and the immediate removal of all contamination should be standard without exception.
