About Onyx Vulcano

Onyx Vulcano is one of the most dramatic natural stones in the Turkish onyx family. The slab appearance lives from a highly intense interplay: deep red to copper-orange fields meet cream-white to golden yellow bands and brecciated cloud structures, shot through with fine white calcite veins. The circular, almost swirling patterns are reminiscent of solidified lava flows — hence the name Vulcano. In the polished state, the partly translucent carbonate structure produces a velvety, glassy lustre that appears in its full splendour when backlit. It is precisely this pictorial effect that makes Onyx Vulcano the first choice for bookmatched wall claddings, backlit bar counters, prestige bathrooms, table tops and exclusive interiors in which the material is intended to act as the leading player.

Geologically, Onyx Vulcano is a Quaternary onyx from Turkish deposits. Onyxes form through the precipitation of calcium carbonate from mineral-rich hot waters in volcanically shaped regions — Anatolia is one of the classic onyx deposits of the world. The characteristic bands and circular structures arise from changing mineral concentrations during the precipitation phases over millennia. The copper-red and grain-coloured tones derive from admixtures rich in iron oxide, the white bands from pure calcite. On the international market the material also runs under the trade names Onice Vulcano, Marigold Onyx, Onyx Red Vulcano, Vulcano Onyx and Vulcan Red Onyx.

Technically, Onyx Vulcano behaves like a classic carbonate onyx: a dense, partly translucent structure, outstanding polishability, great visual depth. The translucent properties are its most important design asset — onyx can be backlit and then develops a lighting effect that no other natural stone offers. With a Mohs hardness of 3-4 the material is soft; it is suited primarily to wall applications, bar counters, table tops and vanity top coverings, less so to heavily used floor areas or kitchen worktops. Chemically the stone remains strongly acid-sensitive: wine, lemon juice, vinegar or acidic sanitary cleaners leave immediately visible etch marks on the polished surface.

Compared with classic Iranian white onyxes such as Onyx Iran or Onyx Bianco, Onyx Vulcano appears markedly more expressive and more intense in colour — not a calm background but a dramatic statement material. Compared with the Italian Onice Smeraldo or Mexican green onyxes, the slab appearance stays within the warm red-copper spectrum. For rooms in which onyx is to be used as a deliberate design climax and backlighting is allowed to make the material shine, Onyx Vulcano is one of the most expressive premium options.

Finishes

Onyx Vulcano is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the preferred finish for onyx — the mirror-smooth surface brings out the material's varied colour character in full. The highest possible colour intensity and deep light reflection. Onyx is acid-sensitive and softer against scratches than marble — recommended for wall cladding and designed visible surfaces, less so for worktops.

Care & fabrication

Onyx Vulcano is a high-quality carbonate onyx and therefore strongly acid-sensitive. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave immediately visible etch marks on the polished surface — permanent matt shadows or loss of gloss. Onyx is generally far more maintenance-intensive than a classic marble and should not be used for heavily used everyday surfaces.

For all applications, a silane- or polysiloxane-based sealer is obligatory. It prevents the penetration of water, oil and colouring agents — but it does not remove the acid sensitivity. On polished surfaces we recommend refreshing the sealer at least once a year.

Daily care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid vinegar cleaners, cement haze removers, acidic sanitary cleaners and strongly alkaline agents. Wine, coffee, oil, lemon juice or coloured cosmetic products should be wiped off onyx surfaces immediately — genuinely immediately, not after a few minutes. On onyx bar counters we recommend coasters for all types of glass and consistent cleaning after every use.

For kitchen worktops, Onyx Vulcano is not suitable. The material is classically used for backlit applications (bar counters, wall claddings, reception desks), prestige table tops in hotel lobbies and wellness areas as well as for vanity top coverings in premium bathrooms — applications with a show character and a controlled usage profile.

For external surfaces, Onyx Vulcano is not suitable. UV radiation can change the warm colour tones over the years, and frost and acidic precipitation attack the surface.

Is Onyx Vulcano suitable for a kitchen?

No. As an acid-sensitive carbonate onyx with a Mohs hardness of 3-4, Onyx Vulcano is not suitable for kitchen worktops. Acids from everyday cooking would leave immediately visible etch marks. How do I clean and care for Onyx Vulcano?

Sealing is obligatory and should be refreshed at least annually. Daily care exclusively with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft microfibre cloth. Acidic cleaners, descalers, vinegar, citric acid and limescale removers are absolutely taboo. Wipe off wine, coffee or coloured liquids immediately — onyx is far more maintenance-intensive than marble.

Is Onyx Vulcano suitable for outdoor use?

No. UV radiation changes the warm colour tones over the years, and frost and acidic precipitation attack the carbonate structure. Onyx Vulcano is a purely internal material.

Onyx Vulcano or a white Iranian onyx — which suits better?

Both are acid-sensitive carbonate onyxes with similar care requirements. Iranian white onyxes such as Onyx Bianco or Onyx Iran appear calmer and subtler with their cream-white to honey-coloured tones — suited to calm backlighting with warm light. With its deep red and copper-orange tones, Onyx Vulcano is markedly more dramatic and more expressive — the choice for statement applications with a powerful pictorial impact.

What does Onyx Vulcano cost?
