Porto Schiefer

Porto Schiefer is the German market designation for the Portuguese Ardósia de Valongo (Lousa de Valongo) — a muscovite-sericite slate more than 400 million years old, from the Ordovician, quarried in the Campo area near Valongo in the district of Porto in northern Portugal. It has an exceptionally fine-grained, evenly dark blue-grey to anthracite and black groundmass with a characteristic natural cleft texture. Also traded internationally as Porto Slate, Porto Black Slate, Ardósia de Valongo and Lousa Valongo; used for external facades, roofs (the classic slate application), paving, floor areas, stairs, skirtings, window sills and prestige building applications with a classically elegant dark character.

About Porto Schiefer

Porto Schiefer shows an exceptionally even, calmly elegant slab character with the classic dark appearance of slate. The groundmass is a very fine-grained, almost powdery dark layer of muscovite (a pale mica), sericite (a very fine-grained muscovite mica) and subordinate dark minerals. The tone varies between dark grey, blue-grey and anthracite black — the characteristic “slate grey” of classic building slate. Distinctive is the natural cleft texture — the fine cleavage of the metamorphic rock produces naturally formed riven faces with subtle irregular micro-reliefs when the material is won. This natural texturing gives slate its characteristic tactile depth and lively appearance, which other flat building materials do not offer. Geologically, Porto Schiefer is an Ordovician muscovite-sericite slate from the Valongo slate belt in the district of Porto in northern Portugal. The stone was formed around 400 million years ago in the Ordovician period from originally clayey sediments, which were transformed into a slate by high-grade metamorphism under pressure and temperature. The quarries lie in the Campo area near Valongo, a traditional slate quarrying area documented since Roman antiquity. Several synonyms circulate in international trade: Ardósia de Valongo (the original Portuguese name — 'slate of Valongo'), Lousa de Valongo (an alternative Portuguese designation), Porto Slate (the principal English name), Porto Black Slate, Lousa Valongo Porto Slate and occasionally Valongo Slate. The German designation 'Porto Schiefer' refers to the port city of Porto near the quarrying areas and has become established on the German-speaking market.

Technically, Porto Schiefer shows exceptionally strong values for a European slate: bulk density 2,820 kg/m³ (very high — somewhat denser than typical granite), compressive strength 187 MPa (very high), compressive strength after frost 168 MPa (a 10 % loss = very good frost resistance confirmed), flexural strength an exceptional 56.9 MPa (well above typical granite values, indeed in the range of industrial hard rocks), water absorption 0.4 %, apparent porosity 1.2 %, linear thermal expansion 7.6 × 10⁻⁶ per °C, abrasion resistance 6.3 mm (Amsler-Laffon), Mohs hardness 3–4 (characteristic of mica-bearing slates). After 25 freeze-thaw cycles, test samples showed no changes in colour or structure — frost resistance is outstandingly confirmed. Full acid resistance as a silicate rock. The coefficient of friction is typically 0.6–0.8 or higher, which makes the stone an excellent choice for external applications where slip resistance is required.

Compared with other European slate selections, Porto Schiefer is the most widely used Portuguese variant, with balanced quality: Theiß slate (German, from Bavaria) is more coarsely structured; Welsh Slate is finer and more expensive; Spanish slate (Alta del Carmen or Bernardos, for example) offers similar applications with somewhat more variable quality grades. Porto Schiefer has a reputation for very good block-to-block consistency and exceptional flexural strength — the high flexural strength (56.9 MPa) is one of the highest values among all European slate selections and makes Porto Schiefer particularly suitable for heavily loaded applications such as external stairs or trafficked floor areas. For architectural projects with a classic, traditional slate character — roofs (the classic slate application), external facades on prestige residential buildings, paving in historic town centres, external stairs carrying heavy traffic, floor areas in prestige living spaces and building applications with a permanently dark character — Porto Schiefer is a choice with deep tradition and strong expression. One point for planning: slate is a layered rock — the cleavage must be taken into account during installation in order to avoid stress cracks from incorrect loading.

Porto Schiefer is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Riven, calibrated

Like riven (a naturally split, rough matte surface), additionally with a calibrated reverse: the underside of the slab is ground level for an even thickness and simplified installation. Recommended for outdoor areas, paving and bonded façade applications that demand precise dimensional accuracy.

Satin-honed, calibrated

As for the satin finish (a brushed matt surface with subtle depth), but additionally with a calibrated reverse: the underside of the slab is ground flat for an even thickness and simplified installation. Recommended for floor areas, stair treads and bonded fixings that demand precise dimensional accuracy.

Honed C600, calibrated

As for honed C600 (a very fine honed finish with clear colour intensity and barely visible honing marks), but additionally with a calibrated reverse: the underside of the slab is ground flat for an even thickness. Recommended for high-quality floor areas and wall claddings that demand precise dimensional accuracy.

Riven

The surface corresponds to a natural splitting of the rock — the layered characteristic typical of slate comes fully into its own. A matt, rough appeal with high slip safety and an originally natural effect. Recommended for outdoor areas, wall claddings and heavily used paved surfaces.

Honed C600

A very fine honed pattern with a C600 grit — the level surface shows a clear colour intensity with honing marks barely visible any more, almost like polished depth in a matte effect. More care-intensive than polished, yet visually very close to polished elegance — a refined choice for high-quality interior surfaces.

Care & fabrication

As a Portuguese mica slate, Porto Schiefer is a robust hard rock with low water absorption (0.4 %), confirmed frost resistance (a 10 % loss of strength after 25 freeze-thaw cycles, with no changes in colour or structure) and exceptional flexural strength. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, bathroom cleaners or descalers leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone — the stone is acid-resistant and well suited to intensive everyday use.

For internal applications we recommend sealing on a silane or polysiloxane basis at first installation. On a riven surface, sealing is particularly worthwhile, because without it the micro-reliefs can hold dirt. A sealer protects against deep penetration of oil, grease and pigments — otherwise discolouration can show up on the heterogeneous slate structure.

Routine care is with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually sufficient. Acidic cleaners are not in themselves a problem (acid resistance as a silicate rock), but should nevertheless be avoided because they can attack the sealer. On textured riven surfaces, films of dirt are more visible than on smooth surfaces — regular cleaning with a soft brush in the fine relief structures is recommended.

Particularly important for slate: the Mohs hardness (3–4) means that slate is more sensitive to mechanical impact and sharp tools than granite (Mohs hardness 6–7). For external applications with potential loading (paving carrying vehicle traffic, external stairs with heavy traffic) you should choose a sufficient material thickness (at least 20–30 mm). Indoors, slate is sufficiently resistant for normal loading.

For kitchen worktops, Porto Schiefer is suitable with reservations — it is not fully cut- and scratch-resistant like granite or quartzite (Mohs hardness 3–4 vs. 6–7+). Heat resistance is given, but hot pans should not be set down directly (use trivets). The finishes currently available from stock are listed in the »Finishes« block further down this page. For a designer kitchen with a dramatic dark material effect and conscious care, however, Porto Schiefer can be highly expressive.

For roofs, Porto Schiefer is the classic application — its excellent frost resistance, low water absorption and natural cleavage make the stone the traditional choice for slate roofs in Mediterranean and central European climate zones. Correctly installed, a slate roof can last several centuries.

For external applications at ground level (paving, stairs, pool surrounds), the natural riven surface is ideal — it offers excellent slip resistance (coefficient of friction 0.6–0.8). In areas with frequent salt contact (de-icing salt, pool chlorine) we recommend refreshing the sealer every 2–3 years.

At Mohs hardness 3–4, Porto Schiefer as a mica slate is markedly more sensitive than granite or quartzite (Mohs hardness 6–7+) — it is not fully cut- and scratch-resistant. Heat resistance is given, but hot pans should not be set down directly (use trivets). The riven surface can show micro-spalling at edges — for kitchen worktops we recommend the honed or satin-honed variant. For a designer kitchen with a dramatic dark material staging and careful maintenance, however, Porto Schiefer can be highly expressive.

Is Porto Schiefer suitable for external paving?

Yes, outstandingly suited. For paving carrying vehicle traffic we recommend slab thicknesses of at least 20–30 mm.

How do I clean and care for Porto Schiefer?

As a Portuguese mica slate, Porto Schiefer is acid-resistant and therefore easy to look after: daily care with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a microfibre cloth is sufficient. We recommend sealing at first installation, particularly on the riven surface; for internal applications, a refresh interval of 5–8 years depending on use, and for external applications check it every 3 years. On textured riven surfaces, regular cleaning with a soft brush in the relief structures is recommended.
