Bateig Diamante (also “Piedra Bateig”, “Piedra Novelda” or “Ibero Limestone”) is a cream to sand-beige Spanish calcarenite from the quarries of Novelda in the province of Alicante (Valencia region) – one of the most significant and most widely built dimension stones of Spanish Mediterranean coastal architecture. The slab shows a very even, warm sand-beige base tone with a fine granular structure, without visible veining or fossil dominance – a calm, almost monochrome dimension stone character. About Bateig Diamante

Background. Bateig Diamante is one of the most iconic dimension stones of Spain and is among the most significant building and façade stones of Mediterranean architecture. The selection has been used since the 19th century for classical, neoclassical and Modernismo buildings in Valencia, Alicante, Madrid and Barcelona – it is part of the building identity of the Spanish Mediterranean coast. Modernismo architects (Antoni Gaudí and his contemporaries) chose Bateig for its excellent workability for ornamental façade details, columns, reliefs and sculptural dimension stone work. Today the stone is increasingly used internationally for high-quality façade projects as well.

Geology and occurrence. Petrographically, Bateig Diamante is a calcarenite – a granular, sandy-looking limestone consisting predominantly of calcite clasts and bioclasts (microfossil fragments) 0.1 – 2 mm in size. This granular structure explains the sandstone-like appearance despite a petrographically clearly carbonate mineralogy. The selection dates from the Cretaceous and was deposited in the shallow shelf sea of the Iberian Cretaceous platform. The deposits are located around Novelda and Elda in the province of Alicante (Valencia region, south-eastern Spain). DNSA classification: limestone, Cretaceous, sedimentary rocks.

Trade designation. In the international stone trade, Bateig Diamante is in part wrongly assigned to the sandstone family – in fact the selection is petrographically a granular limestone (a calcite-dominated rock, not a quartz sandstone). The confusion arises because of the sandstone-like granular appearance. Mineralogically the stone consists almost entirely of calcite, is therefore acid-sensitive and has the same care profile as other limestones.

Appearance. The base tone is a warm creamy sand-beige to pale ivory dimension stone beige with a subtle golden shimmer and an almost monochrome distribution of tonal values. From a middle distance the surface reads as almost single-coloured, sandy and warm; up close one discovers the fine granular structure with evenly distributed calcite and microfossil clasts in a fine-grained calcite matrix. The selection shows no characteristic veining, no fossil dominance and no visible stylolites – that is also the essential design difference from fossiliferous beige marbles such as Perlato Sicilia or from finely figured selections such as Crema Marfil. Bateig Diamante lives from its homogeneous, calm dimension stone effect with a warm Mediterranean tonality.

Technical properties (DNSA values #5557). Bulk density 2,200 kg/m³ (markedly lighter than dense limestones), compressive strength 36.3 MPa (45.6 MPa after frost), flexural strength 12.8 MPa, water absorption 5.8 % (high – this is inherent to the material), thermal linear expansion typical for limestone. Mohs hardness about 3 (calcite). The high porosity means a markedly higher water absorption than in dense limestones such as Crema Marfil or Perlato Sicilia – nonetheless Bateig Diamante is documented as frost-resistant by DNSA (this works through the openly connected pore structure, which allows freezing water to escape). Acid sensitivity: complete (calcitic). Polishability: only fine honing is possible, no high gloss – the high porosity prevents a continuous, closed mirror polish. Not recommended for heavily used internal floors with sand carried in, or for carefree kitchen worktops.

Comparison. Within the Bateig family, Bateig Diamante positions itself as the palest, calmest, most monochrome selection. Bateig Bege is warmer and somewhat darker in tonal value, Bateig Marrón markedly reddish brown. Compared with denser limestones such as Crema Marfil (markedly denser, polishable to a high gloss, less porous), Botticino Classico (paler, finely figured) or Perlato Sicilia (powerfully fossiliferous), Bateig Diamante is more porous and softer in character, but is a classic Spanish dimension stone for façades with high workability. Related selections within the Spanish dimension stone family are Caliza Capri, Crema Levante and Niwala. The Portuguese Moca Creme is also stylistically related.

Honest assessment. Bateig Diamante is the classic choice for any application calling for a pale Spanish dimension stone effect together with high workability. The selection works particularly strongly as façade cladding (with every conceivable dimension stone treatment), as a dimension stone component with ornamental detail, as plinth cladding in sheltered external areas and as wall cladding in Mediterranean elegant interiors. Anyone wanting an acid-proof, polishable stone for heavily used kitchen worktops or entrance floors should reach for a quartzite or a hard rock; anyone looking for a dense beige marble polishable to a high gloss should switch to Crema Marfil or Botticino.

Geschliffen C220

Mattes Erscheinungsbild durch feinen Schliff mit Körnung C220 — die ebene Oberfläche wirkt ruhig mit etwas intensiverer Farbwirkung als C120, leichte Schleifspuren möglich. Care & fabrication

Cleaning. For everyday use, warm water, a soft cloth and a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner are enough. Mild all-purpose cleaners without an acid component and a mild washing-up foam are suitable. Take up spilled liquids promptly – the material is acid-sensitive and, because of the high porosity, also susceptible to pigment stains penetrating deeply (wine, coffee, ink, oils).

Do not use. Acidic cleaners of any kind – descalers (vinegar, citric acid, formic acid), sanitary cleaners with an acid component, WC cleaners, wheel cleaners, oven sprays. Even diluted acids etch calcite rocks immediately and leave dull patches. Aggressive scouring pads or abrasive pastes are likewise taboo.

Sealing. Urgently recommended for all applications with a risk of water or soiling. Because of the high water absorption of 5.8 %, Bateig Diamante is markedly more open-pored than dense limestones and needs a premium sealer with silane/siloxane-based stone protection. This strongly reduces water and pigment uptake, but cannot remove the acid sensitivity. The sealer should be refreshed regularly (every 2 – 4 years depending on loading) – more frequently on heavily weathered external surfaces.

Façade. The classic application. On ventilated façade constructions or as a mortared façade panel in a sheltered build-up, Bateig Diamante has a record of success spanning more than 100 years in Spanish and international architecture. Important: structural protection at plinth and cornice transitions (no standing water, no bombardment with splash water), suitable jointing materials (lime-based, acid-proof), regular inspection. De-icing salt is problematic on calcite rocks and should be avoided.

Kitchen and bathroom. Bateig Diamante is not the first choice for kitchen worktops – the acid sensitivity, the high porosity and the absence of high-gloss polishability are critical weaknesses here. For particular Mediterranean rustic schemes with an antiqued surface and a consistent willingness to maintain it, limited kitchen use is possible. In the bathroom it is usable to a limited extent as wall cladding in sheltered areas with correct waterproofing and sealing.

Floor. Internal floors in Bateig Diamante are not advisable – the high porosity leads to strong uptake of soiling, sand carried in scratches the fine-honed surface, and acid ingress (vinegar, wine, lemonade) leaves immediately visible etch marks. In sheltered commercial interiors with consistent care, however, the selection is a proven choice as wall and plinth cladding.

External. Documented as frost-resistant by DNSA (through the openly connected pore structure). The finishes available from stock are listed in the »Finishes« block further down. De-icing salt, intensive irrigation and splash water should be avoided structurally. Where there is direct exposure to weathering we recommend a trial installation through the first winter to verify the material batch.

Scratches and repair. Where there are dull patches, etch marks, mechanical damage or staining, a specialist stonemason or jointing contractor can locally rework the slab with a fine diamond grind – a full re-polish is not possible because of the material. Deeper damage can be concealed with coloured calcite-based repair mortars.
