Bianco Carrara CD is the commercial standard selection of the world-famous Italian Carrara marble from the Apuan Alps in Tuscany — a fine-grained Jurassic calcite marble with a whitish-grey to bluish-grey ground mass and pronounced mid-grey to dark grey vein bands. Compared with the lighter C selection, CD shows a stronger, darker figure and is the most widely used variant for classic internal applications with an attractive price-performance balance. Internationally also traded as Carrara CD, White Carrara CD and Bianco Carrara Standard; used for classic internal wall claddings, bathrooms, stairs, window sills, floor areas, vanity tops and prestigious living areas.

About Bianco Carrara CD

Bianco Carrara CD shows the iconic appearance of the world-renowned Carrara marble with the characteristic style of the standard selection. The ground mass is a fine-grained whitish-grey to subtly bluish-grey calcite matrix typical of Carrara marbles — cooler and more neutral than the warmer Mediterranean marbles from Spain or Portugal. Characteristic grey vein bands run across the slab face with a stronger, more pronounced course than in the lighter Carrara C selection. The veins mostly run diagonally and in irregular branching patterns, like genuinely grown structures. The vein bands are typically mid-grey to dark grey, occasionally with almost black areas — the CD selection expressly denotes this stronger veining compared with the lighter C selections. On a polished surface the stone develops the classically elegant Carrara depth of gloss with a cool white-grey character — a look that has been regarded for centuries as the epitome of classic elegance and is used in countless historic and modern buildings worldwide.

Geologically, Bianco Carrara CD is a metamorphic calcite marble from the Apuan Alps in northern Tuscany, Italy. The marble formed around 200 million years ago during the Jurassic through high-grade metamorphism of original limestone sediments — the subsequent tectonic uplift of the Alps brought the material to the earth's surface. Technically, Bianco Carrara CD shows solid values for an Italian marble: bulk density 2,700 kg/m³, compressive strength 118.6 MPa, compressive strength after frost 115.8 MPa (only 2.4 % loss = very good frost resistance), flexural strength 17.1 MPa, water absorption only 0.16 % (very low), abrasion resistance 1.12 mm, Mohs hardness 3–4 (typical for calcite marble). The low water absorption and the high density qualify Bianco Carrara CD as a premium marble with very good technical values. Important: despite the exceptional density, Carrara CD is an acid-sensitive calcite marble — wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave etch marks and matt stains on untreated surfaces immediately.

Against Portuguese Estremoz Branco (warmer with subtler vein bands), Carrara CD is cooler and more neutral — the classic choice for modern minimalist architecture and neutral elegance. Poliert

Politur ist die klassischste Veredelung für Marmor und Kalkstein — eine glänzende Oberfläche mit höchstmöglicher Farbintensität und ausgeprägter Tiefenwirkung der Aderung. Je nach mineralischer Zusammensetzung kann die Wirkung stellenweise mattglänzend sein. Säureempfindlich — Wein, Zitrone und Essig hinterlassen Ätzspuren bei längerer Einwirkung.

Satiniert

Die Oberfläche wird gebürstet — weichere Minerale werden gezielt entfernt, es entsteht eine subtile Tiefe und mattes Erscheinungsbild. Besonders geaderte Kalksteine erhalten so eine charaktervolle Optik und Haptik. Die mattere Veredelung kaschiert kleine Ätzungen besser als poliert und ist alltagstauglicher für stark beanspruchte Innenflächen.

Care & fabrication

As an Italian calcite marble, Bianco Carrara CD is acid-sensitive. With Mohs hardness 3–4, water absorption of only 0.16 % and pronounced acid reactivity, the stone requires conscious care and consistent sealing. These notes should be consciously factored into the material choice — Carrara marble is a deliberately chosen design material with a classically elegant character and accepted patina formation, not a maintenance-free all-rounder.

For internal applications we recommend careful sealing on a silane or polysiloxane basis at first installation. With water absorption as low as 0.16 %, Bianco Carrara CD is practically non-absorbent — the sealer serves as additional insurance against acid etch marks. On polished internal surfaces we recommend refreshing every 1–2 years; on heavily used kitchen worktops or in bathrooms, check every 6–12 months. This markedly more frequent refreshing than with hard rocks is typical for marble.

Daily care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually sufficient. Acidic cleaners (vinegar, citric acid, sanitary cleaners, descalers, acid-based bathroom cleaners) are STRICTLY to be avoided — they attack the marble immediately and leave matt etch marks that can only be removed by professional refinishing. Cola, wine, tomato sauce and citrus fruits can also leave etch marks on untreated surfaces — blot spillages immediately with a dry cloth (do not wipe, because wiping would spread the acid across the surface).

For kitchen worktops Bianco Carrara CD is only conditionally suitable — it is not fully acid-resistant and not fully cut- and scratch-resistant (Mohs hardness 3–4 vs. 7+ for granite/quartzite). Heat resistance is given, but hot pans should not be placed directly on the surface (use trivets). For intensively used professional kitchens we recommend alternative hard rocks such as Mahogany India or Steel Grey. For an elegant designer kitchen with a classic Italian character and careful maintenance, Bianco Carrara CD has been the iconic choice for centuries — over time the material develops a characterful patina that should be consciously accepted.
