Limestone from Croatia

Blanco del Mare

Blanco del Mare is a pale, creamy white Croatian bioclastic limestone from the Cretaceous carbonate complex of the Dalmatian-Istrian Adriatic coast, shot through with fine fossil inclusions (foraminifera, micro-bivalve fragments, shell relics). A calm, elegant Mediterranean stage for wall surfaces, floors, stairs and façades — with the characteristic warm natural stone authenticity that recalls the ancient buildings of the Adriatic region.

About Blanco del Mare

Blanco del Mare is a Croatian bioclastic limestone from the extensive carbonate platform complex of the eastern Adriatic — the same major geological structure from which the famous Dalmatian and Istrian dimension stones have been won since antiquity. Diocletian's Palace in Split (293–305 AD), the old town of Dubrovnik, the Renaissance architecture of Venice and countless Istrian and Dalmatian sacred buildings were all built from the pale limestones of this region. The Croatian deposits belong to the Cretaceous shelf sediments of the Tethys carbonate platform — a shallow, warm sea in which biogenic carbonate particles accumulated over millions of years and were finally consolidated diagenetically into solid sedimentary rock.

Finishes

Blanco del Mare is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Geschliffen C220

Blanco del Mare is a carbonate limestone and reacts sensitively to acids. Clean daily with a soft cloth, clear water and a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner.

Do not use: lemon-, vinegar- or all-purpose cleaners with acid additives, descalers, abrasives, steel wool or micro-scratching sponges. On the C220 surface these leave dull etch marks or local matt patches which, depending on their depth, can only be removed by re-honing.

Sealing: after installation and, depending on loading, every 12–24 months, re-treat with a high-quality solvent- or silicone-based natural stone sealer. The finely honed C220 surface benefits particularly from a good sealer, since the microporous structure of the bioclastic limestone can otherwise take up stains.

Kitchen worktop: always set hot pans and pots on trivets — direct heat input of 200 °C plus can produce thermally induced stress cracks. Wipe wine, lemon, tomato sauce, vinegar and juices away immediately; do not let them dry on. Cutting work exclusively on a separate chopping board. For intensive kitchen applications Blanco del Mare is not the first choice — we recommend the stone primarily for prestige applications and less frequented areas.

Bathroom and vanity top: remove limescale-bearing water splashes regularly with a soft cloth. On no account remove limescale rings at the tap with a descaler or vinegar cleaner — these etch the limestone immediately. Instead, work with warm water, a microfibre cloth and, where necessary, a special natural stone bathroom cleaner, and keep the sealer intact.

Floor: soft felt glides under furniture, regular vacuuming rather than sweeping with dirt particles present, mopping with a pH-neutral stone cleaner. In entrance areas with high dirt ingress, use dirt-trapping mats — the fine C220 surface can wear slowly through quartz particles in the dirt.

Outdoors: well suited to façades, wall cladding and wall elements. For directly weathered floor surfaces and pool surrounds a good sealer is required; where there is intensive freeze-thaw cycling and acid rain loading, individual advice applies. Sensitive to de-icing salt in winter.

Repair: scratches and etch marks in the C220 treatment can be evened out by professional re-honing. Larger damage is repaired with colour-matched stone fillers and then blended into the original surface.

Frequently asked questions

Is Blanco del Mare really a marble?

In the international stone trade, Blanco del Mare is frequently marketed as “marble”, but petrographically it is correctly a bioclastic limestone — that is, a sedimentary carbonate rock with preserved fossil inclusions, not a recrystallised metamorphic marble. This is a very widespread trade convention in the Mediterranean region: many Croatian, Italian and Spanish limestones are carried in the market as “marble” even though they are geologically limestones. It has no bearing on their suitability as a dimension stone.

Where does Blanco del Mare come from?

From Croatia, from the extensive carbonate platform complex of the eastern Adriatic — the same major geological structure from which the famous Dalmatian and Istrian dimension stones have been won since antiquity (Diocletian's Palace in Split, the old town of Dubrovnik, the Renaissance buildings of Venice). Geologically these are Cretaceous shelf sediments of the Tethys carbonate platform.

What does the surface designation “C220” mean?

C220 is a finely honed treatment with a grit size of 220, that is, a matt, soft, silky surface between classic honed and satin-honed. This treatment suits bioclastic limestones such as Blanco del Mare particularly well, because it makes the fine fossil structures legible without pushing them into the background under a high-gloss polish.

Are the fossil inclusions a quality feature or a defect?

The fossil inclusions are the defining characteristic of the material and expressly a mark of quality and authenticity, not a defect. They make every slab a geological one-off and are the natural legacy of Cretaceous carbonate platform sedimentation. Anyone seeking a completely fossil-free, uniform appearance is better served by metamorphic marbles such as Bianco Carrara or Volakas.

Is Blanco del Mare suitable for a kitchen worktop?

Possible, but not the first choice. As a carbonate limestone, Blanco del Mare is acid-sensitive and, in the C220 surface, somewhat less easy to maintain than polished marble or granite. For wall surfaces, splashbacks and prestige areas the stone is outstanding; for heavily used kitchen worktops we recommend granite, quartzite or porcelain.

Is Blanco del Mare frost-resistant and suitable for outdoor use?

Yes — Croatian limestones of this type have traditionally been used for external façades, wall elements and prestige external surfaces. With good sealing the stone is frost-capable and very suitable for Mediterranean external architecture. Where there is direct weathering with de-icing salt or intensive acid input from acid rain, weathering-out is possible over time; in sheltered positions or with good care, however, the character remains stable in the long term.

Which Croatian or Italian stones are similar?

Stylistically close are Veselje Unito and Kanfanar from the neighbouring Croatian carbonate complex (Brač, Istria), Pietra di Vicenza and the Apulian bioclastic limestones of southern Italy, Crema Marfil from Spain and Galala limestone from Egypt. All share the basic principle of warm, creamy white, fossil-rich limestones; the specific grain size, fossil inventory and tonality vary.

How much material do you currently have in stock?

We currently carry 20 raw slabs of Blanco del Mare in 20 mm thickness with a C220 surface. For larger projects and colour-homogeneous large areas we recommend prompt reservation — Croatian bioclastic limestones can be combined particularly well from adjacent blocks into continuous slab sequences.
