About Indian Teak
Indian Teak owes its name to its appearance: a warm, golden-yellow to honey-brown ground tone with fine, parallel brown figuring lines that work like a photographic memory of teak. It is precisely this natural, almost organic character that makes the stone interesting for terraces, garden architecture, pool surrounds, facades and rustic interiors — wherever a warm, Mediterranean material effect is wanted and a technically cool slab appearance would be out of place.
Geologically, Indian Teak is a sandstone from Indian deposits. Sandstones are formed when quartz grains are cemented into solid rock over millions of years by mineral binders — usually quartz, carbonate or iron oxides. The warm golden-yellow colouring of Indian Teak comes from iron-oxide-rich binders; the fine figuring lines arise from the original sediment layers. In a high-grade Indian sandstone the Mohs hardness lies in the range of 6-7, with good compressive strength and, for a sandstone, comparatively low water absorption.
Technically, Indian Teak behaves typically for a good sandstone: more porous than granite, but permanently frost-resistant and suitable for external use when properly installed and sealed. The surface is naturally slightly rough and therefore slip-resistant — one reason why Indian sandstones have been regarded as the standard for terraces and pool surrounds for decades.

Compared with imported travertines, Indian Teak reads as warmer and more intense, with a more pronounced wood figure. Against domestic German sandstones such as Mainsandstein or Cottaer Sandstein, the material brings more colour intensity and a more elongated slab appearance, without giving up the character typical of sandstone.
As a sandstone, Indian Teak is markedly more porous than hard rocks such as granite or quartzite. A sealer on a silane or polysiloxane basis is therefore not an option but a requirement — it prevents water, oil and dirt from penetrating and is the basis for a permanently clean surface.
For daily care outdoors, clear water and a soft broom or a pressure washer at reduced jet power are sufficient. For heavier soiling — algae, moss, pollen, road salt — use a pH-neutral sandstone cleaner or an algae cleaner compatible with sandstone. Aggressive acidic or alkaline cleaners are out of the question, because they attack the binder and can change the colour intensity.
The warm golden-yellow colouring can change slightly over the years through UV radiation — that is normal for iron-pigmented sandstones and part of the natural patina. Regularly refreshing the sealer (every 3-5 years, depending on loading) preserves the colour depth for longer.
Outdoors, Indian Teak is frost-proof when properly installed with a fall and with an intact sealer. De-icing salt should be used sparingly in winter — where possible, it is better to switch to grit sand or chippings.
