Wenge gewolkt C C

Geologically, Wenge gewolkt C-C is identical to the sister material Wenge gebändert V-C: a medium to coarse-grained sandstone from the province of Shandong in eastern China (DNSA #5982). Both trade versions come from the same quarry and the same quarry region — the difference lies exclusively in the sawing direction: C-C stands for 'cross cut' (a cross section parallel to the original plane of sedimentation), V-C stands for 'vein cut' (a cut vertical against the plane of sedimentation). With cross cut the slab is sawn parallel to the layering — the bands appear not as stripes but as cloudy cross-sectional patterns. With vein cut, the classic horizontal wenge wood stripes arise. In international trade the material runs under several synonyms: Wenge, Wenge Sandstone, Woodstone, Jupiter, Ebano Sandstone, Coffee Stone, Wooden Brown Sandstone and Brown Wood Sandstone — all versions apply to both sawing directions. At ROSSITTIS we classify Wenge gewolkt C-C as a genuine sandstone. The choice between V-C and C-C is purely a design decision — both sawing directions come from the same stone and have identical technical properties.

Technically, Wenge gewolkt C-C shows values identical to the V-C version (the same stone, a different sawing direction). The bulk density lies at 2,400 kg/m³, the compressive strength at 112.47 MPa, the flexural strength at 8.3-9.1 MPa and the water absorption at a moderate 1.73 %. The Mohs hardness lies in the range of 4-6 typical for sandstones. The stone is therefore considerably softer than hard rocks, but very well suited to decorative wall and interior applications. Sandstones are as a rule acid-resistant within the usual range of use (unlike marble or limestone). The moderate water absorption of 1.73 % makes a consistent impregnation important.

The typical application is the calm, large-scale wall surface or accent wall, in which the organic, flowing cross cut character comes fully into its own — in large slab formats in particular the stone reads like a calm geological cross section through strata. For exterior applications the stone can be used, because of the moderate water absorption, only in protected positions and with consistent impregnation.

Compared with the sister material Wenge gebändert V-C (vein cut, the same stone, a different sawing direction), the C-C version brings a markedly calmer, cloudy, organic character instead of a striped, precise hardwood figure. Both come from the same stone — the choice is purely a design decision: V-C for classic horizontal wenge wood striping, C-C for calm, flowing cross-sectional patterns. Against Tobacco / Yellow Kunming (a lighter Chinese sandstone with a dramatically flowing band structure), Wenge gewolkt C-C brings a markedly darker, more refined ground tone with a calmer slab pattern.
