As a Brazilian migmatite, Kinawa Brazil is an exceptionally robust hard rock with extremely low water absorption (0.09 %), confirmed frost and acid resistance (DNSA) and very high compressive and flexural strength. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, bathroom cleaners or descalers leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone — the stone is markedly easier to look after and is ideally suited to intensive everyday use.
For internal applications we recommend sealing on a silane or polysiloxane basis at first installation. With its exceptionally low water absorption, Kinawa Brazil is practically non-absorbent — the sealer serves as additional insurance. On polished surfaces, refreshing it every 8–10 years is sufficient; on heavily used kitchen worktops or external applications, check it every 3–5 years.
Routine care is with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually sufficient. Acidic cleaners are not in themselves a problem, but should nevertheless be avoided because they can attack the sealer. The finishes currently available from stock are listed in the »Finishes« block further down this page.
For kitchen worktops, Kinawa Brazil is outstandingly suited: cut- and scratch-resistant (Mohs hardness 6–7), insensitive to heat (hot pots and pans can be set down directly for short periods, though prolonged heat exposure above 200 °C should still be avoided), acid-resistant and with excellent stain repellency thanks to its extremely low water absorption. The high flexural strength (19.3 MPa) makes the stone particularly suitable for long slab overhangs on kitchen islands or bar counters.
For external applications, Kinawa Brazil is particularly well qualified: the DNSA-confirmed durability of the polish outdoors, the extremely low water absorption (0.09 %) and the excellent frost resistance (NO loss of strength after frost) make the stone the first choice for demanding external facades with a preserved gloss and exposure to frost and de-icing salt. Polished external facades retain their brilliance for years.
For pool surrounds, external terraces and fountain surrounds, a slip-resistant textured finish is mandatory — polished external surfaces present a high risk of slipping when wet. In areas with frequent salt contact we recommend refreshing the sealer every 3 years.
