Multicolor Rot Funil is an expressive Brazilian migmatite of the granite trade family from the Funil quarry district in the state of Rio de Janeiro with a warm terracotta-red to coral-red groundmass, dramatic diagonal black biotite cloud structures and occasional light quartz-feldspar accents. Internationally also listed as Funil and Multicolor Red Funil; used for floor surfaces, stairs, wall and façade applications, paving, skirtings and structural applications with a warm, expressive material effect.

Multicolor Rot Funil is petrographically a Precambrian migmatite (DNSA Stein 3266) — a metamorphic hybrid rock type with a characteristically irregularly clouded, directional structure. In international trade the stone is listed as 'granite', because in fabrication and mechanical properties it is handled like a classic hard stone. About Multicolor Rot Funil

Multicolor Rot Funil shows an expressive, dynamic slab character with a directional migmatitic movement structure. The base tone is a warm terracotta-red to coral red-brown groundmass with subtle transitions to warm pink-orange tones — a particularly inviting, powerful red saturation that is typical of the migmatites of the Funil region in Rio de Janeiro. Across the slab surface run characteristic diagonal black cloud structures of biotite- and amphibole-rich mineral areas, which give the stone its characteristic directional migmatitic movement. The black areas flow like currents or vein bands through the red matrix and produce the 'Multicolor' slab appearance that gives it its name. Here and there, small light cream-coloured quartz and feldspar flecks set additional light accents in the otherwise warm red composition. The structuring is isotropically clouded with a clearly recognisable foliation — the stone reads like a gentle current or wave movement frozen in stone. On a polished surface the stone develops a rich depth — the warm red groundmass intensifies, the black cloud structures stand out in relief and the light mineral points shimmer subtly. Every slab appearance is a unique one-off — with Multicolor Rot Funil it is particularly worth selecting from real slab appearances, because the distribution of the black currents varies greatly from block to block.

Geologically, Multicolor Rot Funil is a Precambrian migmatite from the Funil quarry district in the state of Rio de Janeiro in south-eastern Brazil. The region north of the capital Rio de Janeiro is part of the Precambrian São Francisco craton and has supplied classic red migmatites to the structural and hard stone market for decades. Petrographically a migmatite — a metamorphic hybrid rock type with light quartz- and feldspar-rich melt layers (leucosome) and dark biotite- and amphibole-rich residual areas (melanosome). The red areas derive from potassium feldspar (microcline/orthoclase) with a high iron oxide content. In international trade the synonyms Funil (the DNSA main name), Multicolor Red Funil (the English trade name) and occasionally just Rot Funil circulate. The designation 'Multicolor' refers to the multicoloured composition of red, grey, white and black within the slab surface.

Technically, Multicolor Rot Funil shows exceptionally strong values: bulk density 2,664 kg/m³, compressive strength 216 MPa (very high), flexural strength 14.3 MPa, porosity 0.82 % by volume, Mohs hardness 6.5–7. According to DNSA the stone is expressly frost- and acid-resistant, and polished surfaces are durable outdoors as well (polish durable outdoors). This makes Multicolor Rot Funil fully suitable for everyday use in demanding internal and external applications including large-area external façades with retained polished gloss and heavily frequented public floor surfaces.

Multicolor Guayana is more expressive with more dramatic black cloud structures and more pronounced plagioclase flecks; Funil is the calmer version with a more even foliation and a less contrast-rich composition. Against classic red granite variants such as Rosso Balmoral (a Finnish rapakivi granite, evenly fine-grained) or Imperial Red (an Indian granite, more strongly figured), Multicolor Rot Funil brings the typically Brazilian migmatitic movement structure with a warm shade. Finishes

Multicolor Rot Funil is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish in the hard stone segment — a mirror-smooth, high-gloss surface with the highest possible colour intensity and maximum depth effect in the mineral structure. As an acid-resistant silicate stone, polished granite is easy to care for and the first choice for kitchen worktops, wall claddings and prestigious exposed surfaces.

Flamed + brushed once

The surface is roughened by heat and brushed once to smooth sharp-edged mineral residues and remove loose material. The feel is somewhat gentler than purely flamed, it remains slip-resistant, and the colour is less intense than polished. The standard choice for outdoor areas, terraces and heavily used floor areas.

Care & fabrication

As a Brazilian migmatite, Multicolor Rot Funil is an exceptionally robust hard rock with low porosity (0.82 % by volume), confirmed frost and acid resistance (DNSA) and very high compressive strength. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone — the stone is markedly easier to care for and excellently suited to intensive everyday use.

For internal applications we recommend a silane or polysiloxane-based sealer at first installation. On polished surfaces a refresh every 8–10 years is sufficient depending on use; on heavily used floor surfaces or external applications, check every 3–5 years. A sealer protects against deep penetration of oil, grease and pigments — otherwise discolouration can show up on the heterogeneous migmatitic surface, particularly on the lighter quartz areas.

Daily care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually sufficient. Acidic cleaners are fundamentally unproblematic (acid resistance DNSA-confirmed), but should nevertheless not be used, because they can attack the sealer. For floor surfaces, Multicolor Rot Funil is outstandingly suited — the high compressive strength (216 MPa), the low porosity (0.82 %) and the DNSA-confirmed frost and acid resistance make the stone a reliable choice for heavily frequented public floor surfaces too. The expressive migmatitic movement structure conceals traces of use and dirt astonishingly well — an important advantage in heavily used floor applications.

For external applications, Multicolor Rot Funil is particularly well qualified: the DNSA-confirmed durability of the polish outdoors (polish durable outdoors) means that polished external surfaces retain their full gloss over years — a rare property that not all red granites have. For pool surrounds, external terraces and fountain surrounds, a slip-inhibiting textured finish is obligatory — on polished external surfaces there is a high risk of slipping when wet. In areas with frequent salt contact (de-icing salt, pool chlorine) we recommend an additional annual sealer refresh. In hot climate zones the warm red base tone stores solar energy — for pool areas in the south, combine it where appropriate with locally cooled watering.
