About LAMINAM® Bianco Statuario Venato

Background. Laminam® is the Italian premium brand for porcelain large-format slabs, founded in 2001 in Fiorano Modenese (province of Modena) as a subsidiary of the System group. Laminam is one of the European pioneers of large-format porcelain and has played a decisive part in shaping the format of thin, large mineral slabs in design terms. The company produces in Italy, supplies architects and interior fitters worldwide and is an established name among German premium kitchen studios and interior architecture practices.

Material structure and manufacture. A Laminam slab consists of around 100 % mineral raw materials – feldspar, quartz, clay minerals and pigments – without polymer binders. The mixture is compacted in a patented pressing process in a mould, provided with decorated pigment layers for the veining and then sintered at temperatures above 1,200 °C in a tunnel kiln. In this sintering the mineral particles partly fuse into a closed crystalline mineral structure – the end product is a fully mineral, through-sintered slab with no resin content. From this follow decisive technical advantages over engineered quartz: water absorption below 0.1 %, very high heat resistance (hot pans can be set down directly), full UV resistance and therefore suitability for external use, frost resistance and almost complete acid resistance.

The natural stone model Bianco Statuario. Bianco Statuario is one of the most prestigious white marbles in the world. The deposits lie in the Apuan Alps east and north of Carrara, Tuscany – in the same mountain district from which Bianco Carrara, Calacatta and other world-famous marbles also come. Bianco Statuario is the highest-quality grade of this district, with a clear pure white ground tone and powerful dark veining. Michelangelo used Statuario marble for his sculptures (including "David"), and the material has stood for the highest sculptural and architectural quality since antiquity. The grade "Statuario Venato" denotes Statuario with particularly pronounced, powerful veining ("venato" = "veined").

The Statuario Venato variant. The ground tone is a clear, cool pure white with no creamy note. Distributed over the ground are powerful, broadly flowing grey main veins and more finely branched secondary veins that read like the dramatic vein network of a natural marble. The vein courses are organic, not regular, but deliberately irregularly distributed – each slab shows a slightly individual image, which nevertheless remains predictable within the grade. Stylistically the veining is more dramatic and more powerful than in the calmer Calacatta Michelangelo (also Laminam) and has clearer linework than the soft cloud slabs.

Format and thicknesses. Laminam supplies the slabs in several large formats – the standard format is around 162 × 324 cm and 100 × 300 cm. The thicknesses are graded in 3, 5, 12 and 20 mm; the 3 and 5 mm slabs are particularly suited to wall claddings, furniture fronts, interior doors and façades, while the 12 and 20 mm slabs are standard for kitchen worktops and bar counters (frequently with a mitred edge joint for a visibly thicker look of up to 4–6 cm visible edge).

Thermal and chemical properties. Unlike engineered quartz, there is no polyester resin here – so the typical weaknesses fall away: Bianco Statuario Venato is heat-proof (hot pans can be set down directly, the slab is unaffected well beyond 200 °C), almost completely acid-proof (wine, lemon, tomato, vinegar leave no traces) and fully UV-stable (suitable for external use). Frost and weather resistance are given.

Stylistically related are Calacatta Michelangelo (somewhat calmer veining) and other Calacatta variants from the brand. Compared with real Bianco Statuario marble from the Apuan Alps, the porcelain remains predictable in its vein course, more acid-proof, more scratch-resistant and completely non-porous – the natural marble appears more classic, more lively, more individual, but is care-intensive and acid-sensitive in kitchen use. Real Statuario is moreover one of the most expensive natural marbles in the world – the Laminam variant is considerably more economical.

Poliert

Care & fabrication

Cleaning. In everyday use, warm water, a soft cloth or a clean mop and a neutral to slightly alkaline pH cleaner are sufficient. Mild all-purpose cleaners, mild washing-up foam and all commercially available sanitary and kitchen cleaners without hydrofluoric acid (HF) are suitable. The porcelain is almost completely acid-proof – even acetic, citric and hydrochloric acid have practically no effect on the slab. Take up spilled liquids promptly, because on the light Statuario surface dark shadows are immediately visible; the material itself, however, is non-porous and therefore stain-proof.

Do not use. Hydrofluoric acid (HF) and fluoride-bearing cleaners are the only class of substance that can genuinely attack porcelain – they occur practically only in industrial glass and stone cleaners and are not relevant in the household. And even though the slab is hard: steel wool and strongly abrasive pads can cause the finest dulling on the polished variant.

Sealing. Not required – porcelain is inherently dense and non-porous, water absorption is below 0.1 %. A sealer would tend to show on the surface as a film and is superfluous.

Kitchen. In kitchen use, Bianco Statuario Venato is technically almost unbeatable: hot pans can be set down directly for short periods (the slab is unaffected well beyond 200 °C), acids such as vinegar, wine, lemon and tomato leave no traces, and there are no cut marks from polyester resin damage, because there is no polyester resin. Nevertheless we recommend chopping boards (knife blades blunt more quickly on the hard slab) and trivets when cooking as standard practice. On the bright white slab, coffee stains, berry juice, tomato and red wine are visually particularly noticeable, but because of the absence of pores they can usually be removed effortlessly.

Bathroom. In the bathroom the slab is fully usable as a washstand, wall cladding, bath surround and shower. Anti-limescale sprays and all commercially available sanitary cleaners are approved. In the shower area, wipe off standing water promptly so that a limescale film does not build up.

Wall accent and furniture. As a wall cladding or furniture top (bar counter, reception), Bianco Statuario Venato works particularly well in the polished, upright format, because the dramatic play of veins develops its full design effect over larger visible surfaces. In thin thicknesses (3 mm), lightweight wall claddings, interior doors and furniture fronts are also possible.

Outdoors and frost. Fully suitable. The slab is UV-stable, frost- and weather-resistant and can be used as a rear-ventilated façade panel, external wall cladding, pool surround and outdoor kitchen worktop. The surface finishes available from stock are listed in the »Finishes« block further down.

Scratches and repair. Porcelain is very hard (about Mohs 7) and therefore considerably more scratch-resistant than most natural materials. Deeper damage cannot simply be re-polished – repair is carried out by replacing the affected workpiece. Particular care is therefore required during fabrication at edges and cut-outs; mitred joints should be executed by experienced specialist firms with special adhesive and precise workshop preparation – with Bianco Statuario Venato additionally with attention to the dramatic vein course at the edges.
