LAMINAM® Sahara Noir Extra belongs to the I Naturali collection of the Italian porcelain pioneer Laminam S.p.A. (founded in 2001 in Fiorano Modenese, Italy — the same Emilia-Romagna ceramic region in which ABK Group, Florim, Atlas Concorde and Del Conca Group also produce). Geologically it is a calcitic carbonate marble with a characteristic organic-bituminous pigmentation — the intense black colouring comes from very finely embedded organic constituents and bitumen-bearing components enclosed in the carbonate rock during diagenesis and metamorphism. The high-contrast white and gold-orange veins are secondary mineralisation zones: white calcite healing along tectonic fissures and gold-orange iron oxide accents (limonite, goethite) along oxidised fissure zones.
For decades Sahara Noir has been regarded as the epitome of dramatically luxurious black marbles — used for exclusive hotel lobbies, bar counters, prestige interior architecture, statement walls and high-end residential design. Genuine Sahara Noir is, however, a demanding material: extremely acid-sensitive (calcitic carbonate), prone to scratching (Mohs hardness 3), limited in stock availability and one of the most expensive marbles on the market. The stone belongs squarely in the high-end natural stone category.
In the slab image, LAMINAM Sahara Noir Extra presents an authentic reproduction of this premium character: a dramatically deep black ground tone with subtle warm undertones that captures the organic-bituminous pigmentation of the natural marble — almost like a night sky over the desert, which is why Laminam itself describes the aesthetic as having “the chromatic depth of the desert night sky”. Across this ground run powerful vertical and slightly diagonal veins in two main colours: fine, precise white-cream calcite veins that flow across the black surface like gossamer crystalline lines, and more strongly developed gold-orange warm vein zones that set dramatic warm accents with their iron oxide pigmentation. The vein patterns are not symmetrical or even, but organically random — as though the original tectonic fissure geometry of the natural marble had been frozen directly.
It is precisely this combination of dramatic geological authenticity and full material robustness that makes the porcelain reproduction a decidedly sensible choice for premium architectural projects. While genuine Sahara Noir is extremely acid-sensitive and problematic in heavily used applications (kitchen worktops, external surfaces, intensively used bathrooms), the porcelain delivers the same visual image in a technically consistent, everyday-capable quality.
Technically it is a fully sintered-through large-format porcelain. Mineral raw materials (natural clays, feldspars, quartzes and pigments, including iron-bitumen pigments for the intense black colouring and the gold-orange accents) are pressed under high pressure into large-format slabs and sintered at temperatures above 1,200 °C. The result is a chemically non-reactive, almost pore-free ceramic material with water absorption < 0.1 %. The material properties: full UV stability, acid resistance, heat resistance, scratch resistance (Mohs hardness 7–8), frost resistance, food safety, slip resistance class R10.
Laminam produces Sahara Noir Extra ex works in the large format 1,200 × 3,000 mm, in the thicknesses Laminam 5 (5 mm) and Laminam 5+ (5 mm with a glass fibre mesh backing), and on request in 12 mm. The polished variant shows the full dramatic effect with brilliant depth and high-contrast veining — ideal for statement islands, bar counters, vanity tops and wall cladding with the character of a lead player. The bush-hammered variant gives the material an archaic, tactile feel that is particularly authentic on stairs, external façades and Mediterranean-rustic applications.
