About Alexander Black
Alexander Black is a black Indian hard rock. Its ground colour is deep black to anthracite, its surface fine-grained, dense and very homogeneous. This makes the stone read as calm, technical and without graphic figure — the exact opposite of a heavily veined marble. For dark internal and external surfaces, worktops, stairs and facades it is one of the most load-bearing material combinations the market has to offer.
The stone comes from India, like many of the black hard rocks in international trade. Petrographically it is with high probability a gabbro (a mafic plutonic rock) — but without a quarry data sheet the exact mineralogical determination remains a cautious estimate. In the natural stone trade the stone is, like other Indian black rocks (Absolute Black, Premium Black and so on), clearly assigned to the granite group. An important distinction: there is a Turkish “Alexandrette Black” on the market as a black marble from Hatay — that is a different stone and not this material.
Technically, Alexander Black is very strongly positioned as a gabbro. Black Indian gabbros typically lie at around 2,950–3,050 kg/m³ bulk density, with water absorption well below 0.3 % and compressive strength often in the range of 180–250 MPa. Acid and frost resistance are fundamentally very good — in practice this means: citrus, vinegar or wine do not attack the surface, and outdoors the stone is fully capable of permanent loading. For kitchens, bathrooms, terraces and facades this is a very carefree profile.

Care & fabrication
As a black gabbro and hard rock, Alexander Black is very easy to look after. A sealer is genuinely essential only in heavily used kitchen areas, but there it makes cleaning and care noticeably easier and reduces visible water and soap rings.
For cleaning and care, pH-neutral natural stone cleaners and a soft microfibre cloth are sufficient. Because the stone is acid-resistant, citrus, wine or vinegar do not damage the surface — a clear advantage over black marbles.
On dark polished surfaces, water marks, limescale rings and fingerprints remain visible more quickly than on matter finishes. Regular dry wiping after cleaning keeps the look even.
Outdoors, correct drainage, clean installation and a slip-resistant textured finish matter more than special chemistry. As a hard rock, Alexander Black is permanently load-bearing there.
