Sandstone from Germany

Mainsandstein Rot

Mainsandstein Rot is a German red sandstone with a fine-grained structure and the classic Franconian dimension-stone presence. At ROSSITTIS it is used for facades, window surrounds, wall copings and traditional external architecture, wherever regional colour and historic character are called for.

About Mainsandstein Rot

Mainsandstein Rot is one of the defining red dimension stones of Germany. Its colour ranges from brick red through warm brown-red to slightly banded or quieter areas. The stone comes into its own particularly in facades, surrounds, plinths and masonry: it does not read as fashionable but as regionally rooted and convincing in terms of building history. For historic references, restoration work and characterful external architecture, that makes it a highly individual material.

Finishes

Mainsandstein Rot is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Outdoors, Mainsandstein Rot benefits from sound constructional design, and indoors from a suitable sealer. With its comparatively open structure, the stone reacts more strongly to moisture and soiling than granite or quartzite.

pH-neutral natural stone cleaners are suitable for cleaning and care. Organic deposits, leaves, dirt and metal abrasion should be removed regularly from horizontal surfaces.

Avoid aggressive acids, strongly film-forming care products and pressure washing with too narrow a jet. These place unnecessary strain on the surface.

In external applications, falls, drainage and the right finish matter more than specialist chemical care. Well planned, Mainsandstein ages with dignity; poorly drained, it ages unnecessarily quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mainsandstein Rot suitable for external use?

Yes, above all for facades, surrounds, wall copings and classic dimension-stone details. That is precisely where its great strength lies.

Is Mainsandstein Rot frost-resistant?

Yes, the sources rate the stone as frost-resistant in principle. Sound constructional planning nevertheless remains decisive.

Where does Mainsandstein Rot come from?

Mainsandstein Rot comes from the Main region in Germany, above all from Franconia and the adjoining areas of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.

Is Mainsandstein Rot suitable for floors?

Only to a limited extent. The stone is regarded as having low abrasion resistance and as harder to clean than hard dimension stones, so floor applications should be planned with restraint.

Mainsandstein Rot or Obernkirchener sandstone?

Obernkirchener is usually denser and more neutral, Mainsandstein Rot more colourful and more regionally distinctive. The decision is often a question of architecture and historic reference.
