About Obernkirchener Sandstein

Obernkirchener Sandstein is one of the best-known German building stones of all. Its effect is calm, fine and self-evident: beige-grey to slightly yellowish, dense in grain pattern and without loud contrasts. That is precisely why it carries large façades, stair arrangements and window reveals so convincingly. The stone appears neither rustic nor fashionable, but durable. That is exactly its great architectural advantage.

The sandstone comes from Lower Saxony and is one of the classic German building sandstones with a long history of use. Its dense, fine-grained structure sets it clearly apart from more open or softer sandstones. Compared with Mediterranean sandstones, Obernkirchener usually appears more compact and more precise; compared with limestone, more mineral and less chalky. For public buildings, refurbishments and high-quality external architecture it has been a reliable benchmark for decades.

Care & fabrication

Outdoors, Obernkirchener Sandstein benefits from clean detailed design; indoors, from a suitable sealer. At around 4.7 % water absorption it is more open than granite or quartzite and reacts correspondingly more strongly to moisture and soiling.

For cleaning and maintenance, use pH-neutral natural stone cleaners. Dirt, leaves, metal abrasion and organic deposits should be removed regularly, above all on horizontal surfaces.

Avoid aggressive acids, strongly film-forming maintenance products and pressure washing with too narrow a jet. That can attack the surface unnecessarily or make it visually uneven.

Outdoors, falls, drainage and constructional weather protection matter more than any chemistry. Well-detailed Obernkirchener Sandstein ages with dignity; poorly drained sandstone ages unnecessarily fast.
