About Rosa Perlino
Rosa Perlino belongs to the tradition-rich Vicenza-Veneto building limestone family of northern Italy — a region that has supplied natural building stone for structures throughout Europe since antiquity and that, with the Venetian and Vicentine stonemasonry tradition, has held a particular position in Italian architectural history since the Middle Ages. The Vicenza region is famous for its varied range of cream, white and rosé-tinted building limestones, traded under the collective term 'Pietra di Vicenza' or the 'Perlino' family — Rosa Perlino is the warm rosé-tinted variant of this family, alongside its pale white sister (Perlino Bianco) and other grades with different colour tones. The trade names used in parallel — Rosa Perlino, Perlino Rosato (Italian for 'rosé Perlino'), Pink Perlino and Rosa Perlato — are synonymous designations for one and the same material.
Geologically it is a Lower Cretaceous limestone deposited around 130 million years ago in a shallow, warm tropical sea on the Tethys carbonate platform. During Alpine orogeny the sedimentary package was folded and tectonically stressed, which produced the characteristic stylolite structure — the fine, branching, meandering brown lines recognisable in the slab pattern as an essential feature of the stone. Like all carbonate rocks, Rosa Perlino is acid-sensitive and reacts to citric acid, vinegar or acidic cleaners with dull etching. Polished surfaces are not stable in the long term in openly weathered external areas; constructionally protected applications or more matt surface finishes are preferable there.

Care & fabrication
As a crystalline Italian limestone, Rosa Perlino is acid-sensitive, but thanks to its low water absorption of 0.11 to 0.13 % it is an exceptionally robust representative of its material class. Indoors, use exclusively warm water with a pH-neutral stone cleaning agent for daily cleaning — acidic household cleaners, vinegar, citric acid descalers or other acidic substances cause dull etched patches that can only be reversed by professional re-polishing. Take up spilled acidic liquids promptly with clear water — the low water absorption gives Rosa Perlino more reaction time than softer limestones. Professional sealing after installation and every 2 to 3 years thereafter is recommended indoors — it reduces the take-up of pigments (red wine, coffee, olive oil) and protects the surface against water-drop rings. In the bathroom, water drops should be squeegeed off after showering. On wall cladding, regular dusting and occasional wiping with a damp cloth are sufficient. Outdoors, avoiding de-icing salt in winter is important — chloride-free de-icing agents are the gentler alternative.
