About Stonewood

The ground tone is a deep warm mahogany to chocolate brown with light brown golden accents, run through with characteristically diagonal fibrous grain bands that imitate the natural course of wood fibre with astonishing precision. Isolated golden-yellow mica points are distributed across the whole surface and set subtle light reflections — with a polished finish a warm, glowing impression arises that dramatically reinforces the wood-like quality. This unique visual character makes Stonewood one of the most impressive naturally warm statement materials in the worldwide quartzite range — particularly fitting for architecture that seeks to combine natural warmth, organic materiality and a premium character.

Geologically, Stonewood is a metamorphic quartzite from Brazil — formed from quartz-rich sandstones that recrystallised under high pressures and temperatures and in the process had their original bedding and fibre structure deformed by tectonic loading into today's expressive grain. The timber-grain appearance is the legacy of this tectonic deformation: the original sediment layers were stretched and folded, so that today they read like wood fibres. In international trade the material runs under numerous synonyms: Stonewood, Stone Wood Quartzite, Stone Wood Granite, Palomino Quartzite, Tie Dye Quartzite, Golden Rings, Golden Ring Granite, Wood Granite, Yellow Wood Quartzite and Spiderman Classico Quartzite — each trade name describes a different aspect of the unusual material effect. At ROSSITTIS we classify Stonewood as a genuine quartzite. Important for identification: in the German natural stone database two further stones exist under the trade name “Stone Wood” — a Brazilian trachyte (DNSA #6017) and a Brazilian sandstone/Tavira Brasil from Sacramento/Minas Gerais (DNSA #5530). Both are independent stones with different petrographic properties and are not identical with the classical Stonewood quartzite. At ROSSITTIS the material is the classical quartzite of the international trade classification.

Technically, Stonewood shows the robustness characteristic of Brazilian quartzites. The bulk density lies at around 2,680 kg/m³, the compressive strength at 195 MPa, the flexural strength at a very high 25 MPa and the water absorption at a low 0.25 %. The Mohs hardness lies at 7. The stone is therefore fully acid-resistant (unlike marble or limestone), cut- and scratch-resistant, frost-resistant and well suited to heavily loaded applications. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar or acidic sanitary cleaners leave no etch marks. The close interlocking of the quartz crystals also makes the stone highly polishable: polished, the timber-grain slab image shows its full warm, glowing depth effect.

Compared with classical brown granite standards such as Tan Brown (an Indian granite, evenly fine-grained) or Imperial Brown, Stonewood brings a completely different, unique wood-fibre quality with a dramatic material character. Set against other Brazilian quartzites such as Vittra Crystal (a storm-grey/arctic-white/oxide-red composition) or Bronzzo (a metallic bronze quality), Stonewood brings the organically warm wood-fibre effect — a rare and very distinctive visual composition. Finishes

Stonewood is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish for quartzite — a glossy surface with the highest possible colour intensity and a pronounced sense of depth. Depending on the mineral composition, the effect can be satin-gloss in places. As a silicate rock it is fully acid-resistant and scratch-hard — ideal for kitchen worktops and feature surfaces.

Care & fabrication

As a Brazilian quartzite, Stonewood is a robust hard rock with low water absorption (0.25 %), full acid resistance and a Mohs hardness of 7. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone — the stone is markedly easier to care for and well suited to intensive everyday use.

For internal applications we recommend a sealing treatment based on silane or polysiloxane at first installation. On polished quartzite surfaces, 5-10 years can pass between refreshes of the sealing treatment depending on use; on heavily used kitchen worktops, check it every 2-3 years. Sealing protects against deep penetration by oil, grease and pigments — otherwise discolouration can show up on the lighter areas of Stonewood's heterogeneous timber-grain surface.

Day-to-day care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually sufficient. Acidic cleaners are in principle unproblematic, but should nevertheless not be used, because they can attack the sealing treatment. For kitchen worktops, Stonewood is very well suited: cut- and scratch-resistant, insensitive to heat (hot pots and pans can be set down directly for short periods, though longer exposure to heat above 200 °C should nevertheless be avoided), acid-resistant and with good stain repellency. The high flexural strength (25 MPa) supports overhangs and longer unsupported sections of slab. The expressive timber-grain surface conceals small signs of use remarkably well — small scratches and water marks disappear into the powerful slab image. For external applications, Stonewood is frost-resistant and weather-stable over the long term thanks to its low water absorption. Polished external surfaces can show minimal losses of gloss after years in positions heavily exposed to UV — the warm brown tone remains UV-stable over time. In areas with frequent contact with salt (road salt, pool chlorine) we recommend an additional annual refresh of the sealing treatment.

Does Stonewood really look like timber?

Yes, with a precision unusual for natural stone. The diagonally running fibrous grain is astonishingly close to polished hardwood — above all on a polished surface, at a fleeting glance a Stonewood slab really does look like polished mahogany, teak or rosewood. The warm brown to golden tones and the organic fibre structures imitate the natural character of timber convincingly. In a bookmatched layout (two mirror-image slabs side by side), the impression of a continuous veneer grain arises — a dramatic effect for statement wall surfaces.

Very well suited. With a Mohs hardness of 7, low water absorption (0.25 %), a compressive strength of 195 MPa, very high flexural strength (25 MPa) and full acid resistance, Stonewood is cut-, scratch- and heat-resistant and absorbs no wine, lemon or vinegar acids. The expressive timber-grain surface conceals small signs of use remarkably well — scratches and water marks disappear into the powerful slab image. The high flexural strength supports overhangs and longer sections of slab. For surfaces particularly tolerant of fingerprints we recommend a more matt finish rather than polished.

Where does Stonewood come from?

Stonewood comes from Brazil, one of the world's most important supplier countries for premium quartzites. The precise quarry region varies — the trade name is used by several Brazilian quartzite quarries. How do I clean and care for Stonewood?

As a quartzite, Stonewood is very easy to care for: daily care with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a microfibre cloth is sufficient. We recommend a sealing treatment at first installation; for internal applications a refresh interval of 5-10 years depending on use, on heavily used kitchen worktops check it every 2-3 years. Acidic cleaners are in principle unproblematic, but should nevertheless not be used. On polished surfaces, dry cleaning with a polishing microfibre cloth after damp wiping is advisable — it ensures a clear appearance and preserves the full warm, glowing depth effect of the timber grain.

Stonewood or Bronzzo — which suits better?

Both are Brazilian premium quartzites with full acid resistance and a Mohs hardness of 7, but with a clearly different character. Bronzzo (a quartz-grunerite gneiss) brings a unique metallic bronze quality with the character of hammered metal, an unusually high density (3,286 kg/m³) and exceptional flexural strength (38.9 MPa) — a material that reads like patinated bronze or copper. Stonewood (a quartzite) brings an astonishingly genuine timber-grain quality with warm mahogany tones and a diagonally running fibre structure — it reads like polished hardwood. For a metallic warm bronze appearance, Bronzzo; for a natural warm wood appearance, Stonewood.

What does Stonewood cost?
