About Travertin Scabas

Travertine Scabas lives on a warm, multicoloured material effect. The base tone moves between golden yellow and a strong ochre, interspersed with brown band structures, copper-coloured accents and occasional pink shimmers. Unlike calm Italian Roman travertines, Scabas shows a considerably more expressive depth of colour — hence also its byname Autumn Leaves Travertine, which describes the warm autumnal colour palette. The slab image is never homogeneous; every block brings its own composition of warm tones. It is precisely this liveliness that makes the stone interesting for façade claddings, wall claddings, pool surrounds, floor surfaces, stairs and Mediterranean-inspired interior fit-outs — wherever a warm, Mediterranean statement look is required.

Geologically, Travertine Scabas is a travertine from the quarrying areas around Seydisehir in the province of Konya in central Turkey. The region has been a centre of Turkish travertine extraction for decades. Travertines form from mineral-rich spring water that precipitates calcium carbonate in layers — the warm golden-yellow and brown tones of Scabas derive from iron- and manganese-bearing admixtures, and the characteristic pores are traces of water bubbles and plant remains during deposition. On the international market the material also runs under the trade names Scabas Travertine, Scabos Travertine, Konya Scabas, Philadelphia Scabos and Autumn Leaves Travertine. Related sortings from Iran (Persian Scabas) show similar colour palettes with a somewhat denser structure.

Technically, Travertine Scabas behaves like a classic Turkish travertine: bulk density 2,378 kg/m³ (the Konya sorting), compressive strength 48.6 MPa, flexural strength 13.3 MPa, water absorption 2.65 %. The water absorption lies in the typical travertine range; Iranian sortings show denser values at 0.5-1.0 % WA. Frost resistance is typically very good for travertines from volcanically influenced regions. Chemically the stone remains acid-sensitive (carbonate): wine, lemon juice, vinegar or acidic sanitary cleaners leave etch marks on the material surface. In fabrication, the natural voids are usually filled with transparent or colour-matched resin or cement mortar; unfilled sortings with open pores are available as the rustic variant.

Travertin Scabas is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Tumbled

Friction with rock aggregate and water in a rotating drum creates a matte surface with slightly chipped edges and a satin-like feel. The appearance looks naturally aged. Suitable exclusively for wall and floor tiles, not for slabs — typical of Mediterranean design concepts.

Filled + polished

Natural pores and cavities are filled with a special filler compound and thus closed — the surface is then polished. The highest possible colour intensity and gloss; depending on the mineral composition, the material can at most be polished to a semi-gloss. Easier to care for than the unfilled variant.

Unfilled + polished

The natural pores and cavities remain visible and unworked — a typical travertine characteristic. The surface is polished for the highest possible colour intensity and gloss; depending on the minerals, only satin-gloss may be achievable. More maintenance-intensive than filled, but with the full natural appeal.

Care & fabrication

As a carbonate travertine, Travertine Scabas is acid-sensitive. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave etch marks on the material surface — visible as matt shadows or a loss of gloss.

For all applications, an impregnation on a silane or polysiloxane basis is mandatory. With travertine this is particularly important because of the characteristic voids and the higher water absorption of 2.65 % (the Konya sorting) — stains can otherwise penetrate deeply. On polished surfaces we recommend refreshing the impregnation every 1-2 years, on external surfaces more frequently.

Daily care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft microfibre cloth or mop. Avoid vinegar-based cleaners, cement haze removers, acidic sanitary cleaners and strongly alkaline agents. Wine, coffee, oil, lemon juice or cosmetic products should not stand on the surface for long.

For kitchen worktops, Travertine Scabas is only conditionally suitable. The material is classically used rather for façades, wall claddings, pool surrounds and external areas — the multicoloured look comes into its own particularly well over large areas. Anyone who wants the warm material character in the kitchen should reckon with patina or choose a more care-friendly quartzite or granite alternative.

Only conditionally. Travertine Scabas or Travertin Romano — which suits better?

Both are acid-sensitive carbonate travertines with a similar maintenance requirement. Travertin Romano from Tivoli is classically Italian — calm in cream-beige or warm walnut-brown tones. Travertine Scabas is considerably more intense in colour with a warm multicoloured palette of golden yellow, ochre and brown — more expressive and Mediterranean-warm.
