Storm Noce comes from the tradition-rich travertine quarrying area around Denizli in western Turkey — a region that is among the world's most important travertine suppliers and has served European and international markets with high-grade Anatolian travertine selections for decades. The region's network of quarries produces numerous travertine variants in different tonalities — from pale cream-beige through warm honey-yellow to walnut-brown selections. Storm Noce is the warm walnut-brown variant of this family, with the Italian marketing suffix “Noce” (Italian for “walnut”), which describes the warm walnut-coloured tonality of the stone. The marketing name “Storm” refers to the dynamically speckled, mottled material signature with its stormily agitated structures. The parallel designation “Travertin Noce C-C Turco” with the suffix “C-C” stands for Cross Cut, that is, the cut across the sediment bedding of the travertine, which is responsible for the mottled slab appearance.
Geologically it is a Cenozoic freshwater travertine formed by the slow precipitation of calcium carbonate from supersaturated warm mineral springs. During the precipitation process, plant remains, trapped gases and micro-organisms created the typical elongated cavities and layered bedding. The warm walnut-brown colouring results from iron-oxide-bearing and manganese-bearing mineral components that were embedded in moderate concentration in the precipitated carbonate during travertine formation — the mineralisation is more restrained than in intensely golden-yellow travertines (Travertin Giallo Persia) and tends towards a grey-shaded warmth. The suffix “C-C” (“Cross Cut”) in the trade name denotes the cutting direction of the slabs across the original sediment bedding. Travertine can fundamentally be sawn in two main orientations: in the vein cut (along the sediment bedding, in which the stone shows characteristic horizontal bands and linear structures) or in the cross cut (across the bedding, in which the stone shows a cloudy, mottled appearance without linear structures). Storm Noce is produced in the cross cut and accordingly shows a lively, flowing, almost painterly slab appearance with organic cloudings and widenings instead of linear banding. Visually the stone is defined by a warm walnut-brown to grey-brown material signature with a speckled, mottled structure, interspersed with lighter cream-beige areas, occasional lighter calcite accents and fine mineral inclusions. Slab variation is moderate — all slabs show the characteristic walnut-warm tonality, while individual slabs vary in colour intensity and mottling density.
Technically, Storm Noce shows the values typical of medium-strength Turkish travertines: bulk density 2500 kg/m³, compressive strength 57 MPa, wear resistance 28.7 cm³/50 cm², water absorption 1.0 %. The lower compressive strength compared with denser Mediterranean limestones and the relatively high wear resistance figure are typical of travertine and should be taken into account when choosing the application — the DNSA rates its suitability for heavily walked floor areas as marginal. Like all carbonate rocks, Storm Noce is acid-sensitive and reacts to citric acid, vinegar or acidic cleaners with matt etching. Frost resistance is listed in the DNSA as plausibly assumed, but is not officially certified. The DNSA note records that Storm Noce achieves only a matt polish — high-gloss applications are therefore not possible, which underlines the natural material character.
In interior fit-out, Storm Noce is a characterful and atmospheric choice for Mediterranean, warmly inspired, classically rustic and tropically oriental architectural schemes. Classic applications are wall claddings, floor areas at moderate frequency, stair treads, skirtings and bathrooms. The warm walnut-brown tonality creates an inviting, autumnally warm-toned atmosphere and harmonises with dark brown timber fittings in walnut, mahogany or dark oak, with warm earth tones in wall colours, and with brass, bronze and gold accents. Outdoors the stone can be used for covered pool surrounds, skirting details, stairs under a canopy and constructionally protected paving — proven in central European climates with proper sealing. As a carbonate rock, Storm Noce is acid-sensitive and should be cared for attentively. Indoors, use warm water with a pH-neutral stone cleaning product only — acidic household cleaners, vinegar, citric acid descalers or other acidic substances cause matt etched patches that can only be reversed by professional repolishing or regrinding. Take up spilt acidic liquids promptly with clear water. Professional sealing after installation and every 1 to 2 years thereafter is recommended indoors and obligatory outdoors — it reduces water absorption decisively, protects against freeze-thaw damage and mitigates the uptake of pigments (red wine, coffee, olive oil). With the unfilled variant, dirt collects over time in the natural pores, which lets the appearance age in a deliberately lively way — anyone wanting a consistently even appearance should choose the filled variant. The DNSA notes that Storm Noce is only marginally suitable for heavily walked floor areas (lower wear resistance than denser hard rocks) — for intensively walked areas, more robust hard rocks are the better choice. With pool surrounds, attention to chlorinated splash water is important: strong chlorine can cause local lightening of the walnut-brown tonality. De-icing salt in winter is absolutely to be avoided on external travertine surfaces.
