About Bedrock Black

Bedrock Black is a gabbro – an igneous plutonic rock that formed like granite, but is composed of feldspar-poor, dark minerals such as pyroxene and plagioclase. The result is a deep black to dark grey material with an even, very fine grain that, when polished, shows an almost infinite depth and a silky mirror gloss.

In the natural stone industry, gabbros such as Bedrock Black are carried under the trade category granite, since they have technically similar properties: extreme hardness, high compressive strength and abrasion resistance, acid resistance and frost resistance. These values make Bedrock Black one of the most durable and resilient materials available in the natural stone field.

Anticato, untreated

The Eco Antik surface is flamed and then intensively brushed — the result is a more rustic, livelier look with a pronounced tactile quality. Recommended for kitchens as well as interior wall and floor claddings in which the material is meant to work as a characterful statement stone with a craftsman-like appeal.

Care & fabrication

A gabbro such as Bedrock Black is one of the easiest natural stones to maintain. Acid-resistant, abrasion-resistant and almost impermeable to water, it needs no sealing. Daily cleaning with clear water or a mild cleaner keeps the surface immaculate. On the material surface, water marks remain more visible on dark stone than on pale — dry off afterwards with a soft cloth.

What is the difference between gabbro and granite?

Both are igneous plutonic rocks, but gabbro is poor in quartz and rich in dark minerals such as pyroxene, which explains the deep black colour. Technically they are similarly hard and durable.

Is Bedrock Black suitable for external areas?

Yes. Gabbro is frost-resistant and very weatherproof – good for external paving, façades and stairs.
