About Belgisch (Granit) Kalkstein
Belgian Bluestone, often also referred to as Petit Granit or Belgian blue limestone, is one of the most characterful European limestones. The colour ranges from blue-grey to blue-black, joined by visible crinoids, fine fossil fragments and occasional pale calcite veins. It is precisely this mixture of dense base colour and lively fossil structure that makes the stone so distinctive. It does not read as slick but as grown, and in high-quality architecture that is a great advantage.
The stone comes from Belgium and is one of the classic Belgian dimension stones with a long building history. Unlike many pale limestones, Belgian Bluestone appears markedly more compact and more powerful. Compared with Portuguese blue limestones it often reads as more fossiliferous and more full-bodied; against dark granites it remains softer and more calcareous. That makes it particularly interesting for stairs, façades, floor surfaces and dimension stone components where a dark natural stone with genuine European provenance is wanted.
Technically, Belgian Bluestone is very strong for a limestone: around 2,690 kg/m³ bulk density, only about 0.10 % water absorption, approximately 157.0 MPa compressive strength and around 17.0 MPa flexural strength. Added to that is very high frost resistance, described as more than 168 freeze cycles without adverse change. These values explain why the stone is so widely used not only indoors but also outdoors. At the same time, as a limestone it remains acid-sensitive. For façades, floors and window sills that is readily manageable; for kitchens with a lot of lemon juice, vinegar and descaler it is considerably more demanding than granite or quartzite.
Honed is often the most convincing finish for Belgian Bluestone, because it shows the fossil structure clearly and does not smooth the stone artificially. The finishes available from stock are listed in the »Finishes« block further down. Antiqued treatments suit classic architecture and historic references very well. At ROSSITTIS, Belgian Bluestone is available as a raw slab, in tiles, as tread and riser, window sill, skirting, façade element, coping and for further made-to-measure dimension stone components.
The honest assessment: Belgian Bluestone is not a maintenance-free dark kitchen stone and no substitute for black granite. Its strength lies in dark, fossiliferous limestone architecture with exceptionally good external performance. If exactly that combination is what is wanted, there are few comparable materials.

Belgisch (Granit) Kalkstein is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.
Polished
Polishing is the most classic finish for marble and limestone — a glossy surface with the highest possible colour intensity and a pronounced depth to the veining. Depending on the mineral composition, the effect can be matte-gloss in places. Acid-sensitive — wine, lemon and vinegar leave etch marks after prolonged contact.
Sandblasted
The surface is blasted with quartz sand at high pressure and evenly roughened — the surface stays level, but it feels rough to the touch. The colour appears less intense than on polished variants. Slip-resistant and frost-resistant — for outdoor areas, paving and steps with a requirement for sure footing.
Satin-honed
The surface is brushed — softer minerals are selectively removed, creating a subtle depth and a matte appearance. Strongly veined limestones in particular gain a characterful look and feel this way. The more matte finish conceals small etch marks better than a polish and stands up better to everyday use on heavily used interior surfaces.
Diamond-sawn
A special surface in which the slab is not processed further after sawing — level, but rough to the touch with a matt, technical appearance. Saw marks shape the raw, undisguised appeal. For industrial design concepts and emphatically reduced architecture with a wish for an honest material effect.
Honed C120
Matt appearance created by coarse honing with a C120 grit — the level surface shows a more restrained colour intensity than polished; light honing marks are possible. Slightly more maintenance-intensive than polished, but more scratch-resistant. A characterful choice for modern interior architecture with reduced reflection.
Anticato, untreated
The Eco Antik surface is flamed and intensively brushed — this creates a more rustic, livelier look with a pronounced feel. Recommended for slip-safe interior wall and floor claddings in which the material is meant to work as a characterful statement stone with a craftsmanlike, Mediterranean appearance.
River finish
The surface is roughened by water pressure — the colour tone comes through more strongly than with flamed plus brushed. A level, slip-resistant texture with pronounced colour depth. Recommended for outdoor areas, terraces and façade surfaces where a characterful, non-slip surface with clear material depth is required.
Honed C320
A matte appearance created by finer honing with a C320 grit — the level surface shows a more intense colour than coarser honing, and honing marks are reduced. More care-intensive than polished, but very finely matte and elegant — a choice for high-quality interior architecture with a calm, refined appearance.
Sketch tranché®
A special finish with a characteristic, finely lined texturing — the treatment produces a subtle, multi-directional structuring with a matt appearance. A design-led choice for designed wall claddings and statement applications; technical details and availability are given on direct request.
Flamed + brushed once
The surface is roughened by heat and brushed once to smooth sharp-edged mineral residues and remove loose material. The feel is somewhat gentler than purely flamed, it remains slip-resistant, and the colour is less intense than polished. Recommended for outdoor areas and for heavily used floor areas that need secure footing.
Care & fabrication
Belgian Bluestone should be sealed carefully on floors, window sills, stairs and kitchen surfaces. This makes cleaning and care easier and reduces the uptake of moisture and coloured staining agents.
For cleaning and care, pH-neutral natural stone cleaners, a soft cloth and little standing water are suitable. Acidic cleaners, descalers and aggressive bathroom or kitchen chemicals are unsuitable for this limestone.
On kitchen surfaces, lemon juice, vinegar, wine and coffee should not be left to act for long. Despite the very low water absorption, the stone remains calcite-bound and reacts to acid.
Outdoors, Belgian Bluestone is very robust; nonetheless, clean drainage, suitable joints and correct installation remain decisive. High frost resistance is no substitute for good construction.
Frequently asked questions
Is Belgian Bluestone suitable for the kitchen?
Only with limestone-typical care. At around 2,690 kg/m³ bulk density, about 0.10 % water absorption and approximately 157.0 MPa compressive strength the stone is technically strong, but it remains acid-sensitive.
Which finishes are available for Belgian Bluestone?
The finishes available from stock are listed in the »Finishes« block on this page.
Where does Belgian Bluestone come from?
Belgian Bluestone comes from Belgium and is known as Petit Granit or Belgian blue limestone. It is one of the classic Belgian dimension stones with a fossil structure.
How do I clean and care for Belgian Bluestone?
For cleaning and care you should use pH-neutral natural stone cleaners and seal the stone regularly. Acidic cleaners are unsuitable.
Is Belgian Bluestone frost-resistant?
Yes, very strongly so. The stone is described as unaffected by frost and, according to the available data, withstands 168 freeze cycles without critical change.
Belgian Bluestone or Azul Valverde?
Belgian Bluestone reads as more fossiliferous, more full-bodied and often somewhat more craft-like. Azul Valverde usually appears calmer and more homogeneous. Both are strong blue limestones, but with a different character.
What does Belgisch (Granit) Kalkstein cost?
The price depends on the batch, thickness, surface finish and fabrication — with natural stone there is no serious flat rate per square metre. Business customers see prices once their B2B account is activated; private customers receive a complete quote through a fabricator near them.
