Bateig Fantasia (also Blue Fantasy Limestone, Bateig Azul Fantasia or Piedra de Bateig Fantasia) is a Spanish biocalcarenitic limestone from the quarries near Novelda in the province of Alicante — cream-beige to pale grey in its overall effect, with a fine, sandy, fossil-rich texture and subtle grey-blue undertones. About Bateig Fantasia
Bateig Fantasia belongs to the tradition-rich Piedra de Bateig family from the quarrying area around Novelda in the province of Alicante on the Spanish south-east coast. Besides Bateig Fantasia, this family also includes Bateig Azul, Bateig Blanca and Bateig Diamante — all from the same Tertiary geological formation, each with a slightly different colouring and texturing depending on the exact quarry position and bedding depth. Geologically it is a biocalcarenitic limestone — that is, a fine-grained carbonate sandstone composed predominantly of microscopic shell fragments and skeletal remains of marine microorganisms such as foraminifera, bryozoans and shell fragments. The fine bioclastic component gives the stone its characteristically sandy, floury texture and makes it softer and easier to work than dense marbles and hard limestone, which is why it is also traditionally used for sculpture, fountains and delicate stonemasonry.
Visually, Bateig Fantasia is shaped by a calm, elegant look: a cream to pale grey base tone with a subtle blue-grey undertone — the marketing name “Blue Fantasy” alludes to this slightly bluish shimmer, which reads more or less distinctly in daylight depending on the wall colour and the lighting situation. The surface shows a fine, almost homogeneous micro-grain with occasional small, darker mineral or fossil inclusions that enliven the texture without producing a restless image. Like all carbonate rocks, Bateig Fantasia is acid-sensitive and reacts to citric acid, vinegar and acidic cleaners with dull etch marks.

Care & fabrication
As a bioclastic limestone, Bateig Fantasia is acid-sensitive — the most important care information. Indoors, only warm water with a pH-neutral stone cleaning product may be used for daily cleaning. Aggressive household cleaners, citric-acid descalers, vinegar or other acidic substances cause dull etched patches, which can only be reversed by professional re-polishing or grinding. Take up spilled acidic liquids promptly with clear water. Because of the comparatively high water absorption of around 5.5 %, sealing is particularly important on Bateig Fantasia — professional sealing after installation and then every 1 to 2 years is recommended indoors, and outdoors it is obligatory. It decisively reduces water absorption, protects against freeze-thaw damage, mitigates the uptake of pigments (red wine, coffee, olive oil) and considerably extends the service life on horizontal external surfaces. In the bathroom, water droplets should be squeegeed off after showering, since standing water on unsealed areas can lead to discolouration over the long term. De-icing salt in winter must absolutely be avoided on Bateig external surfaces — salt crystallisation in the relatively porous structure can lead to considerable spalling; chloride-free de-icing agents should be used. With correct care the elegant look of the stone is retained for decades.
