Desert Stone is an Indian sandstone in a warm red-brown to terracotta-orange ground tone with a characteristically fine sedimentary structure. Its high quartz content makes it technically particularly robust — good frost resistance, high compressive strength and acid resistance. A warm, natural choice for facades, floor areas, stairs and warm Mediterranean interiors.

Indian sandstone (a clastic sedimentary rock). Mineralogically dominated by quartz sand grains with haematite/limonite pigmentation (producing the red-brown colouring) and silica cementation. Characteristic is the high quartz content, which gives the material above-average technical properties for its material class: higher compressive strength, lower water absorption, better freeze-thaw resistance and lower acid sensitivity than standard sandstones.

About Desert Stone

Desert Stone is a red Indian sandstone from northern India. Geologically it is a clastic sedimentary rock whose original sand grains were bonded into a solid dimension stone during diagenesis, under pressure and through cementing solutions (primarily silica and iron oxide). The warm red-brown to terracotta-orange tones arise from haematite and limonite pigmentation of the quartz sand grains — iron oxide compounds that became embedded in the grain framework during sedimentation and diagenesis.

The decisive technical advantage of Desert Stone over many other sandstones is its high quartz content. While conventional sandstones often contain 60–80 % quartz, Desert Stone can show quartz contents considerably above that — which influences the material properties positively: higher compressive strength, lower water absorption, better freeze-thaw resistance and less susceptibility to acid attack.

In the slab, Desert Stone presents a warm red-brown to terracotta-orange ground tone that varies between lighter sand tones and stronger earth-red tones depending on the batch. The fine-grained sedimentary structure is recognisable as a delicate figure, without dramatic banding or veining. In places, subtle bedding lines are visible that reflect the original geometry of sediment deposition — a calm, authentically natural stone character with a warm Mediterranean atmosphere.

For the application this means: Desert Stone is a first choice for warm Mediterranean facades, floor areas, stairs, external architecture and warm rustic Mediterranean interiors. The warm red-brown tonality harmonises excellently with Corten steel, brushed brass, dark timber, sand-warm natural tones and muted earth tones. In prestige external surfaces and warm Mediterranean living schemes, the material develops an atmospheric, calm, almost desert-like warmth.

For anyone comparing Desert Stone with other materials: stylistically close are other Indian sandstones such as Mandana Red, Modak sandstone and Rainbow Sandstone (all Rajasthan/India). In an international comparison, many Jordanian, Moroccan and Egyptian desert sandstones resemble its character. Anyone looking for a warmer but technically even more robust stone could switch to a red granite (New Imperial Red); anyone who needs a cooler Mediterranean character should go to beige sandstones such as Pietra di Liguria.

Finishes

Desert Stone is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Honed C220

Matt appearance created by fine honing with a C220 grit — the level surface has a calm look, and light honing marks are possible. More maintenance-intensive than polished, but with a characterful, natural appearance. A choice for sandstone floor areas and wall claddings that call for a matt Mediterranean effect.

Flamed + brushed once

The surface is roughened by heat and brushed once — sharp-edged mineral remnants are smoothed and loose material is removed. A slightly gentler feel than flamed alone, still slip-resistant, with a colour less intense than polished. Recommended for outdoor areas, terraces and heavily used non-slip surfaces.

Care & fabrication

Desert Stone is a dense, quartz-rich sandstone with above-average technical properties for its material class.

Daily cleaning: a soft cloth or soft mop, clear water and a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner. Avoid acidic cleaners and descalers — even though the high quartz content offers protection, the carbonate and iron oxide constituents in sandstones are not fully acid-resistant.

Sealing: on polished and fine surfaces, recommended every 12–18 months depending on loading. The finishes currently available from stock are listed in the »Finishes« block further down this page.

Kitchen worktop: possible but not the first choice — as a material class, sandstone is less easy to look after than granite or quartzite. Better suited to wall applications, vanity tops and prestige areas.

Facade and external floor area: frost-capable when properly installed and drained (considerably better than standard sandstones thanks to the high quartz content). Use de-icing salt sparingly in winter.

Stain treatment: wipe up fresh splashes (wine, coffee, tomato sauce, oil) immediately. Where stains have penetrated non-sealed areas, work with specialist sandstone stain removers.

Repair: scratches and matt patches can be evened out by proper regrinding. The fine-grained structure conceals small damage well visually.

Desert Stone or red granite?

Red granite (New Imperial Red, Multicolour Red) is markedly harder (Mohs 6 rather than around 3–4) and more acid-resistant, but often cooler and more even in colour. Desert Stone has the authentically warm desert character of a sandstone with a softer, sedimentary character typical of natural stone. Which choice suits depends on the desired colour temperature and loading profile.

How much material do you currently have in stock?

We currently carry 32 slabs of Desert Stone in 12 mm, 20 mm and 30 mm thicknesses with the two standard finishes. For larger projects we recommend reserving material promptly.

What does Desert Stone cost?
