Galilee Grey

Galilee Grey is a classic Israeli sedimentary limestone from the quarry area of A. Grebelsky & Son in the Galilee region (Galil) in northern Israel — a very fine-grained, evenly light-grey to mid-grey calcite matrix with subtle horizontal stylolite lines and isolated fossil traces. Also listed internationally as Galilee Gray; used for modern interior wall and floor surfaces, bathrooms, spa areas, designer living spaces, kitchen splashbacks and prestige interior applications with a contemporary, clean grey feel.

About Galilee Grey

Galilee Grey shows an exceptionally even, calm and contemporary sedimentary limestone character with a modern feel. The ground mass is a very fine-grained, almost powdery light-grey to mid-grey calcite matrix with a classically calm, even texture. Characteristic are the subtle horizontal stylolite lines — natural zigzag structures that formed through pressure solution processes during diagenetic consolidation and that are characteristic of many high-quality sedimentary limestones. These stylolite lines are often prized in the natural stone field as a valuable stylistic element, because they make the geological authenticity of the material visible. Here and there, subtle fossil traces of foraminifera and calcareous algae from the sediment formation appear. The overall effect of the material is calm, modern and cool — the stone reads as a bright, friendly background material with a contemporary minimalist distinction. On a satin-honed surface the stone develops a velvety matt sheen with a fine texture. Compared with warm Mediterranean limestones such as Crema Marfil or Jura Beige, Galilee Grey brings a distinctly cooler, more modern feel — very well suited to minimalist architecture with a reduced material weight.

Geologically, Galilee Grey is a sedimentary limestone from the Galilee region (Galil) in northern Israel. The quarries are operated by the long-established Israeli stone company A. Grebelsky & Son — founded in 1923 by Aharon Grebelsky in Jerusalem. The company is now in its third generation and is one of the most important suppliers of high-quality Israeli limestones, including materials such as Jerusalem Gold, Jerusalem Grey, Ramon Grey and Benjamin Grey. Petrographically, Galilee Grey is a fine-grained calcite limestone. In the trade the stone is frequently classified as 'marble' — a trade convention customary in Israel and the Middle East for high-quality, readily polishable sedimentary limestones. Petrographically correct is 'limestone'. At ROSSITTIS we classify Galilee Grey in the limestone family. In international trade the stone mostly circulates only under the designations Galilee Grey and Galilee Gray (the English spelling variant).

The typical technical properties of Israeli sedimentary limestones comprise a bulk density around 2,500–2,700 kg/m³, water absorption around 0.5–2 %, compressive strength between 80–150 MPa and a Mohs hardness of 3–4 (typical for calcite limestones). Detailed technical data sheets with measured values for compressive strength, flexural strength or water absorption are not consistently available for the specific Galilee Grey grade — the producer A. Grebelsky expressly recommends the material for interior applications with low to medium traffic, not for heavily loaded circulation areas. Important: as a calcite limestone, Galilee Grey is acid-sensitive — wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave etch marks and dull patches on untreated surfaces immediately. Under direct water loading, mineral deposition can cause spalling — careful sealing is mandatory.

At ROSSITTIS we carry Galilee Grey as a raw slab in 20 mm and 30 mm thickness (the standard thicknesses for interior wall and floor applications) and for project-specific cut-to-size. Also available as a tile for floor and wall applications, as stairs and window sills. The available standard finish is satin-honed (a velvety matt character with a fine texture — the typical treatment for modern interior applications).

Compared with classic Mediterranean limestones, Galilee Grey is a cool modern choice: Crema Marfil (Spanish, warm beige) is considerably warmer; Jerusalem Gold and Jerusalem Grey (same producer) are related Israeli grades with a slightly different tone; Bateig (Spanish, light grey) has similar applications with a somewhat cooler Mediterranean feel; Miros type Myrddin (Turkish) is warmer with a creamier tone. Within the grey limestone family, Galilee Grey is the balanced modern variant with a contemporary feel. For architectural projects with modern restrained elegance — designer bathrooms, spa areas, wall cladding in living spaces, modern floor surfaces with low traffic, kitchen splashbacks and interior surfaces with a contemporary minimalist ambition — Galilee Grey is a fitting choice in the light-grey sedimentary limestone range. Important for planning: despite the trade designation as 'marble', Galilee Grey is geologically a limestone and therefore acid-sensitive — the material choice should be made with a clear understanding of this characteristic and ideally for purely interior applications with a moderate care expectation.

Satiniert

Die Oberfläche wird gebürstet — weichere Minerale werden gezielt entfernt, es entsteht eine subtile Tiefe und mattes Erscheinungsbild. Besonders geaderte Kalksteine erhalten so eine charaktervolle Optik und Haptik. Die mattere Veredelung kaschiert kleine Ätzungen besser als poliert und ist alltagstauglicher für stark beanspruchte Innenflächen.

Care & fabrication

As an Israeli calcite limestone, Galilee Grey is acid-sensitive and considerably more care-intensive than granite or quartzite. With a Mohs hardness of 3–4 the stone demands conscious care and consistent sealing. These points should be consciously factored into the material choice — Galilee Grey is a deliberately chosen design material with a modern feel, not a maintenance-free all-rounder.

For interior applications we recommend careful sealing at first installation on a silane or polysiloxane base, ideally applied in two coats for sufficient penetration depth. On satin-honed interior surfaces we recommend refreshing every 2–3 years, in heavily used areas every 1–2 years. This considerably more frequent refreshing than with hard stones is typical of sedimentary limestones.

Daily care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually enough. Acidic cleaners (vinegar, citric acid, sanitary cleaners, descalers) are STRICTLY to be avoided — they attack the limestone immediately and leave dull etch marks that can only be removed by professional re-honing. Cola, wine, tomato sauce and citrus fruits can also leave etch marks on untreated surfaces — take up spills at once.

Particularly important in bathrooms: under direct, prolonged water loading, Galilee Grey can develop mineral deposits that can lead to spalling (small-area surface flaking). Careful sealing is mandatory, and acidic sanitary cleaners are strictly to be avoided. Remove water and soap residues regularly, because soap residues left to act for longer can permanently reduce the sheen.

For kitchen worktops, Galilee Grey is suitable only with restrictions — it is not fully acid-resistant and not fully cut- and scratch-resistant (Mohs hardness 3–4 versus 7+ for granite/quartzite). Heat resistance is given, but hot pots should not be set down directly (use trivets). For intensively used professional kitchens we recommend alternative hard stones such as Mahogany India or Steel Grey. For a modern designer kitchen with a contemporary minimal feel and careful care, however, Galilee Grey can be very coherent.

For circulation areas, Galilee Grey is recommended only for low to medium traffic (according to the producer's specification) — for heavily frequented public floor surfaces, entrance areas or stairs under high load we recommend alternative hard stones. For bathrooms, spa areas, living rooms and bedrooms the loading is within the typical range.

For external applications, Galilee Grey is not recommended — limestones react sensitively to freeze-thaw and road-salt cycles and to acidic precipitation in urban environments. The ideal field of use is indoors.
