Marble from China

Ice Stone

Ice Stone (also Ice Grey, Nordic Grey, Ice Stone Marble or Ice Connect Marble) is a dramatically patterned marble with a white to light grey-bluish base effect, flowing feathered dark grey vein movements, characteristic olive-green to jade-green inclusions and deep black accent passages — an extraordinary, almost painterly material signature with high slab-to-slab variation. Capable of a high polish — the statement choice for prestige wall claddings, feature surfaces, bar counters, large-scale bookmatch patterns, bathroom feature walls and designed interior architecture with a dramatic material character.

About Ice Stone

Ice Stone is an extraordinarily patterned marble that ranks among the most dramatic statement materials of the modern stone trade. The trade designation “Ice Stone” is used on the international market for several visually similar stones, all of which share a characteristically icy, almost glacier-like look — white to light grey base passages, seemingly flowing grey vein markings and contrasting green and black accents that recall frozen waters with algal and mineral inclusions. The particular variant with pronounced jade-green flecks, dark onyx-like pools and undulating, almost water-droplet-like concentric vein markings is also listed as “Ice Connect Marble” or “Ice Green Marble” and is among the internationally most sought-after statement stones for high-quality interior fit-out projects.

Finishes

Ice Stone is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Poliert

As a carbonate rock, Ice Stone is acid-sensitive — acidic foods such as lemon juice, vinegar, wine, cola and fruit juices as well as acidic cleaners cause dull etch marks that are particularly clearly visible on the white base passages. In wall and feature surface use this sensitivity is unproblematic, but on bar counters, table tops and especially on kitchen worktops it must be expressly taken into account. For daily cleaning, use only warm water with a pH-neutral stone cleaning agent; aggressive household cleaners, abrasive sponges or microfibre products with an abrasive effect must be avoided at all costs. Take up spilled acidic liquids immediately with clear water. Professional sealing after installation and every 1 to 2 years thereafter is strongly recommended — it reduces the uptake of pigments (red wine, coffee, olive oil) and protects the material surface against water-drop rings. On the white base passages, water droplets and cleaning streaks are visually clearly apparent, which is why particularly clean, lint-free cloth material should be used when wiping. For wall claddings, regular dusting and occasional wiping with a damp cloth are sufficient.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of rock is Ice Stone?

Ice Stone is a marble from China with a characteristic multi-mineral look: a white to light grey carbonate matrix, flowing jade-green inclusions (chlorite, epidote) and deep black mineral pools. As a marble it is acid-sensitive and is among the most dramatic statement materials on the current stone market.

What do the various trade names such as Ice Stone, Ice Grey, Nordic Grey mean?

Ice Stone, Ice Grey, Nordic Grey and Ice Stone Marble are related trade names for visually similar, cool grey to white-green natural dimension stones. On the international market they are used partly synonymously, partly for slightly different variants of the same or closely related materials. The variant carried at ROSSITTIS shows the spectacular white base tone with jade-green flecks and black pools — one of the most dramatic statement marble variants on the current stone market.

How variable are Ice Stone slabs?

Very variable — and that is an essential trait of the material, not a quality defect. Since Ice Stone consists of numerous different mineral components and the arrangement of these components in the slab depends on its position in the original block, the visual appearance varies considerably from slab to slab — some slabs show more green accents, others more grey vein markings, some more dramatic black pools. For orders with high visual demands we therefore expressly recommend viewing the slabs beforehand, so that the specific slab can be assessed before installation. Bookmatch installation is chosen particularly often with Ice Stone in order to achieve a controlled symmetry of the markings.

Is Ice Stone suitable for bookmatch installation?

Ice Stone is one of the most spectacular choices for bookmatch installation. The flowing, organic vein markings, the jade-green mineral inclusions and the black pools create, when adjacent slabs are laid as mirror images, symmetrical large-scale patterns that are often perceived as butterfly, mandala or almost surreal compositions. Bookmatch wall claddings in Ice Stone are among the most impressive statement applications in prestige hotel lobbies, bar counter back walls and exclusive residential feature walls. The layout and the choice of slabs should be viewed before installation.

Is Ice Stone suitable for kitchen worktops?

With clear reservations. The acid sensitivity to lemon juice, vinegar, wine and cola leads to dull etching, which stands out particularly clearly on the white high-gloss surface. In very carefully run design kitchens, where every spilled drop is wiped up immediately and the client accepts the natural formation of a patina as a characteristic feature, use is possible; for intensively used family kitchens we recommend acid-insensitive hard stones such as white quartzites or white-coloured engineered quartz. Professional sealing does not protect against acid attack.

In which applications is Ice Stone typically used?

Ice Stone is primarily a statement material for the highest design aspirations. Classic fields of use are large-area bookmatch wall claddings in hotel lobbies and entrance areas, bar counters and counter fronts, bathroom feature walls behind free-standing baths, table and console tops with statement character, free-standing wall panels in prestige living rooms, yacht interiors and feature surfaces in boutiques and commercial spaces. Because of its pronounced material signature, the stone has the strongest effect in restrained surroundings where it is allowed to act as the visual focal point.
