LAMINAM® Pietra di Savoia Perla is a large-format porcelain slab from the Italian premium manufacturer Laminam in a bright, calm and mineral dimension stone look. In design terms the slab quotes the classic Italian Pietra di Savoia sandstone from Piedmont with its characteristic pearl greige-grey ground tone, very fine horizontal lineations and subtle cloud structures. About LAMINAM® Pietra di Savoia Perla

Background. Laminam® is the Italian premium brand for large-format porcelain slabs, founded in 2001 in Fiorano Modenese (province of Modena) as a subsidiary of the System group. Laminam is one of the European pioneers of large-format porcelain and has decisively shaped the design of thin, large mineral slabs. The company produces in Italy, supplies architects and interior fitters worldwide and is an established name among German premium kitchen studios and interior design practices.

Material composition and manufacture. A Laminam slab consists of around 100 % mineral raw materials – feldspar, quartz, clay minerals and pigments – without polymer binders. The mixture is compacted in a mould in a patented pressing process, provided with decorated pigment layers for the particular look and then sintered at temperatures above 1,200 °C in a tunnel kiln. In this sintering the mineral particles partly fuse into a closed crystalline mineral structure – the end product is a fully mineral, sintered-through slab with no resin content. This yields decisive technical advantages over engineered quartz: water absorption below 0.1 %, very high heat resistance, full UV resistance and thus suitability for external use, frost resistance and almost complete acid resistance.

The natural stone model Pietra di Savoia. Pietra di Savoia is a classic northern Italian sandstone from the Susa Valley in Piedmont (north-western Italy) – a Permo-Triassic sedimentary stone with a characteristically bright greige-grey ground tone, subtly horizontal layers and fine mineral inclusions. The natural stone was traditionally used for façades, floor coverings, fountain surrounds and Alpine architecture and has been well known in Italy for centuries. Unlike the famous Pietra Serena (a grey-greenish Florentine sandstone), Pietra di Savoia is brighter and calmer in tonal value.

The Perla variant. “Perla” (“pearl”) denotes the brightest, pearlescent shimmering variant of the Laminam Pietra di Savoia collection. The ground tone is a bright, slightly warm-toned greige-grey with a subtle shimmer. Across the ground are distributed very fine horizontal lineations and subtle cloud structures that look like a soft sandstone grind. From a middle distance the surface appears consistently calm and neutral; close up you discover the fine natural-stone layered feel. The Pietra di Savoia line typically comprises several tonal variants – Perla (brightest), Avorio (warm cream), Grigia (darker grey) and Pearl Jet (anthracite).

Format and thicknesses. Laminam supplies the slabs in several large formats – the standard format is around 162 × 324 cm and 100 × 300 cm. The thicknesses are graded at 3, 5, 12 and 20 mm; the 3 and 5 mm slabs are particularly suited to wall cladding, furniture fronts, internal doors and façades, while the 12 and 20 mm slabs are standard for kitchen worktops and bar counters as well as for interior and external floor coverings.

Thermal and chemical properties. Unlike engineered quartz, there is no polyester resin here – which removes the typical weaknesses: Pietra di Savoia Perla is heat-resistant (hot pots can be set down directly, the slab is unaffected well beyond 200 °C), almost completely acid-resistant (wine, lemon, tomato, vinegar leave no traces) and fully UV-stable (suitable for external use). Frost and weather resistance are given.

The calm, bright dimension stone feel suits classic Italian living concepts, modern living concepts with Alpine references, Mediterranean architectures, hotel foyers and spa and wellness areas.

Comparison. Within the Laminam portfolio, the Pietra di Savoia collection is the calmest, most strongly natural-stone-based line – in contrast to the dramatic marble-look slabs (Noir Desir, the Calacatta lines) or the industrial Calce concrete slabs. Compared with genuine Pietra di Savoia, the porcelain remains acid-resistant (the natural material contains carbonate fractions and is more acid-sensitive), heat-resistant, frost- and UV-proof as well as easier to care for. The natural stone appears geologically livelier and more individual, but is more care-intensive in the bathroom and the kitchen. Compared with the ABK Base Pearl range (CTX BasicKeramik), Pietra di Savoia Perla is markedly more characterful with a clear layered feel – Base Pearl is calmer and more neutral.

Honest assessment. Pietra di Savoia Perla is a calm, Mediterranean-elegant choice for interior and exterior surfaces where natural-stone-based brightness and technical resilience are wanted at the same time. The slab works particularly strongly as a large-format interior or exterior floor, as a façade panel and as wall cladding. Anyone looking for a truly characterful, craft-oriented natural material should reach for genuine Pietra di Savoia; anyone who needs a bright, calm dimension stone feel with full technical resilience (external use, heat, acid) is very well served here.

Bocciardato gestockt

Inspiriert von der gestockten Oberfläche von Naturstein — die Fläche wirkt körnig und weist durch die gebrannte Keramikoberfläche eine subtile Rauigkeit auf. Durch den Brand bleibt die Oberfläche geschlossen und pflegeleicht. Rutschhemmend — für stark beanspruchte Bodenflächen und Außenbereiche mit hoher Trittsicherheit.

Care & fabrication

Cleaning. In everyday use, warm water, a soft cloth or a clean mop and a neutral to mildly alkaline pH cleaner are sufficient. Mild all-purpose cleaners, mild washing-up foam and all commercially available sanitary and kitchen cleaners without hydrofluoric acid (HF) are suitable. The porcelain is almost completely acid-resistant – even vinegar, citric and hydrochloric acid practically do not attack the slab. Take up spills promptly, because on the bright surface shadows are visually apparent; the material itself, however, is pore-free and therefore stain-proof.

Do not use. Hydrofluoric acid (HF) and fluoride-containing cleaners are the only class of substance that can genuinely attack porcelain – they occur practically only in industrial glass and stone cleaners and are not relevant in the household. Even though the slab is hard: steel wool and strongly abrasive pads can cause the finest dulling on the polished variant.

Sealing. Not required – porcelain is dense and pore-free in itself, and water absorption is below 0.1 %. A sealer would tend to show up on the surface as a veil and is superfluous.

The roughly textured bocciardato variant (the standard surface at ROSSITTIS) offers a markedly more natural-stone-like feel with clear slip resistance – ideal for external surfaces, floor coverings and stairs. The somewhat more deeply textured surface can take up minimally more dirt than a smooth polished variant; regular cleaning with a soft brush and a mild cleaner is sufficient.

Kitchen. In kitchen use, Pietra di Savoia Perla is technically almost unbeatable: hot pots can be set down directly for a short time, acids such as vinegar, wine, lemon and tomato leave no traces, and there are no cut marks from polyester resin damage. Even so, we recommend chopping boards (knife blades blunt more quickly on the hard slab) and trivets when cooking as standard practice.

Bathroom and spa. In the bathroom the slab is fully usable as a vanity unit, wall cladding, bath surround and shower. Anti-limescale sprays and all commercially available sanitary cleaners are approved. In the shower area, wipe off standing water promptly so that a limescale film does not build up. The bocciardato variant is particularly recommended as a shower floor surface, because it is slip-resistant.

Outdoors, pool and façade. Fully suitable. The slab is UV-stable, frost- and weather-resistant and can be used as a back-ventilated façade panel, external wall cladding, pool surround and external floor covering. On external surfaces the bocciardato standard surface is particularly recommended (slip-resistant, closer to natural stone).

Scratches and repair. Porcelain is very hard (around Mohs 7) and therefore considerably more scratch-resistant than most natural materials. Deeper damage cannot simply be re-polished – repair is carried out by replacing the affected workpiece. Particular care with edges and cut-outs is therefore required during fabrication.

Engineered quartz contains roughly 7–10 % polyester resin as a binder; porcelain is entirely mineral with no resin content. This gives porcelain three important advantages: higher heat resistance (hot pots can be set down directly), full UV resistance (suitable for external use) and almost complete acid resistance. Engineered quartz, on the other hand, remains warmer to the touch and less brittle at the edge joint.

Is Pietra di Savoia Perla suitable for external surfaces, façades and pool surrounds?
