LAMINAM® Verde Alpi belongs to the I Naturali collection of the Italian porcelain pioneer Laminam S.p.A. (founded in 2001 in Fiorano Modenese, Italy — the same Emilia-Romagna ceramic region in which ABK, Florim, Atlas Concorde and many other premium porcelain manufacturers also produce). Laminam was one of the world's first manufacturers of large-format porcelain slabs and has substantially shaped the porcelain market segment for architecture and interior fit-out.
The I Naturali collection brings together Laminam's reproductions of iconic Italian and international natural dimension stones — among them famous marbles such as Calacatta, Statuario, Patagonia and indeed Verde Alpi. Unlike the Diamond Collection (with dramatic premium marble looks and the polished starlit sparkle effect), I Naturali concentrates on authentic, geologically anchored natural stone reproductions with a high fidelity of image.
The design model — Verde Alpi — is one of the best-known Italian dimension stones and belongs to the family of green serpentinite marbles from the Italian Aosta Valley (Valle d'Aosta) in the Western Alps. Geologically it is a metamorphosed ultramafic mantle rock, pressed up to the Earth's surface from oceanic mantle material during the tectonic uplift of the Alpine plate collision — a so-called ophiolite complex. The intense green colouring comes from serpentine minerals (antigorite, lizardite, chrysotile), formed from the original olivine and pyroxene main components of the mantle rock through hydrothermal action of water. The characteristic white veining consists of secondary calcite healing zones — calcitically cemented fissures that arose after serpentinisation through continued tectonic stress and were sealed with calcium-bearing solutions.
Verde Alpi has been a central dimension stone of Italian and Alpine architecture for centuries — used for sacred buildings, prestige interior architecture, classic bathrooms and exclusive residential design. Genuine Verde Alpi is, however, a demanding material: acid-sensitive (the calcite veins react with acids), prone to scratching in the softer serpentine zones and limited in stock availability. The stone is one of the most expensive Italian dimension stones and is only available to a limited extent on the market.
In the slab image, LAMINAM Verde Alpi presents an authentic reproduction of this premium character: a dramatically deep green-black to almost forest-black ground tone that captures the mineral colouring of the serpentine main mass. Across this ground runs a powerfully branching network of white-cream to grey-white veins — fine hairline veins alternate with more strongly developed main branches that flow through the surface like healed fissures. In places the veins condense into marbled zones, then they change to almost motionless dark green solid areas — an authentic reproduction of the original geological structure. Laminam offers the design in 6 different face variants, which makes large-area installation without obvious repeat patterns possible; a book-match variant for mirrored, symmetrical surface compositions is also available.
It is precisely this combination of dramatic geological authenticity and full material robustness that is the strength of the porcelain reproduction. While genuine Verde Alpi marble is acid-sensitive, requires regular sealing and is problematic in heavily used applications (kitchen worktops and external surfaces in particular), the porcelain delivers the same visual image in a technically consistent, everyday-capable quality.
Technically it is a fully sintered-through large-format porcelain. Mineral raw materials (natural clays, feldspars, quartzes and pigments, including iron-chromium pigments for the intense green colouring) are pressed under high pressure into large-format slabs and sintered at temperatures above 1,200 °C. The result is a chemically non-reactive, almost pore-free ceramic material with water absorption < 0.1 %. The material properties: full UV stability, acid resistance, heat resistance, scratch resistance (Mohs hardness 7–8), frost resistance and food safety.
Laminam produces Verde Alpi as standard in the large format 1,200 × 3,000 mm in various thicknesses: Laminam 5 (5 mm) and Laminam 5+ (5 mm with a glass fibre mesh backing), and on request in 12 mm and 20 mm. On request we produce from it kitchen worktops, islands, vanity tops, wall and floor tiles, stairs, external façades, pool surrounds, table surfaces, fireplace surrounds and project-specific special cuts.
For anyone comparing Verde Alpi with other materials: the stylistic model is genuine Verde Alpi marble from the Italian Aosta Valley — geologically authentic and unique, but expensive, acid-sensitive and with all the care requirements of natural stone. Related natural stone options are Verde Guatemala (a somewhat cooler green tone, Guatemala), Verde Spluga (an Alpine gneiss with greenish accents) and Verde Rajasthan (Indian, markedly brighter).
