Mystic Grey

Mystic Grey is a Brazilian gabbro from Minas Gerais on the border with Espírito Santo with a dark grey to anthracite-black groundmass and a characteristically irregularly clouded mineral distribution of dark augite and ore minerals in a lighter plagioclase feldspar matrix. Internationally also listed as Mystic Gray, Marshall Grey and Mashall Grey; used for kitchen worktops, bar counters, floor surfaces, wall claddings, façades and prestigious interior and exterior surfaces with a classically elegant dark character.

Petrographically, Mystic Grey is a Precambrian gabbro (a plutonic igneous rock with a high proportion of plagioclase feldspar, augite and biotite), but it is listed in the trade as a granite (DNSA #5718).

About Mystic Grey

Mystic Grey lives on a calm, elegant dark grey material effect with a characteristic “irregularly clouded” mineral distribution. The base tone is a medium to dark grey anthracite with warm black undertones, interspersed with lighter creamy grey plagioclase feldspar zones that emerge from beneath the dark augite and biotite minerals like clouds or diffuse veils. This “irregularly clouded” distribution is the feature that gives the stone its name — the trade name “Mystic” refers to the mysteriously deep character created by the flowing light-to-dark transitions. On a polished surface the stone develops a dark, elegant depth with subtle light reflections from the light mineral zones — a timelessly restrained material that does not polarise but works as an elegant dark background. The fine-grained structure and the almost even distribution make Mystic Grey a calm statement stone that harmonises equally with classic and modern architecture.

Geologically, Mystic Grey is a Precambrian gabbro from the border region between the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo — DNSA-confirmed under entry #5718 (INSK 27.17). DNSA classifies the rock unambiguously as a gabbro, a plutonic igneous rock with a high proportion of dark mafic minerals (plagioclase feldspar 42 %, augite/pyroxene 28 %, biotite 10 %, ore minerals 7 %, albite 6 %, calcite 2-3 %, microcline 2 %). This mineral composition is classically gabbroic — gabbros are igneous rocks that solidified slowly deep within the Earth. The high plagioclase component makes the stone particularly capable of taking a polish; the augite and biotite proportions produce the characteristic dark grey base tone. In international trade gabbro is traditionally listed within the granite family, and Mystic Grey is marketed under several synonyms: Mystic Grey, Mystic Gray, Marshall Grey and Mashall Grey. At ROSSITTIS we classify Mystic Grey in the customary trade manner as a granite. Important for identification: several unrelated stones exist with similar “Mystic” trade names — Chinese Mystic Grey Granite (Fujian) and Mystic Grey Marble (China), Indian Mystique Grey Granite and others — none of them identical to the Brazilian Mystic Grey. At ROSSITTIS it is exclusively the Brazilian gabbro.

Technically, Mystic Grey shows excellent values for a Brazilian gabbro. The bulk density lies at an unusually high 2,860 kg/m³ (gabbros are denser than classic granites at 2,700 kg/m³ because of their heavy mineral content), the compressive strength at 212 MPa, the flexural strength at a considerable 20.5 MPa and the water absorption at a low 0.3 %. The Mohs hardness is 6. DNSA explicitly confirms acid resistance and frost resistance as well as the outdoor durability of the polish — a particularly valuable property that many stones do not fulfil. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar or acidic sanitary cleaners leave no etch marks. DNSA classifies Mystic Grey as “used now and again” in Germany — it is among the classically widespread Brazilian dark hard stones in the German-speaking market.

Compared with classic black granite classics such as Nero Assoluto Zimbabwe (evenly deep black, without a cloud pattern) or Star Galaxy (black with golden mica points), Mystic Grey brings a characteristically clouded dark grey base tone with more subtle mineral accents — less striking than Star Galaxy, but livelier than an even Nero Assoluto. Set against the sister material Nero India Premium (an Indian gabbro with a more even black character), Mystic Grey brings the more expressive cloudy mineral distribution. For architectural projects with a classically elegant dark character — modern kitchens, hotel lobbies, restaurants, gravestones, pool areas and external façades — Mystic Grey is a very widespread and readily accessible choice in the classic mid-price segment of Brazilian dark hard stones.

Finishes

Mystic Grey is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish in the hard stone segment — a mirror-smooth, high-gloss surface with the highest possible colour intensity and maximum depth effect in the mineral structure. As an acid-resistant silicate stone, polished granite is easy to care for and the first choice for kitchen worktops, wall claddings and prestigious exposed surfaces.

Satin-honed

The satin surface is created by brushing, which selectively removes softer minerals and gives the surface a slight depth. A matte appearance with subtle light reflection and a warm feel to the touch. Easy to maintain, insensitive to scratches and suited to everyday use — a popular alternative to a polish in modern kitchens and living spaces.

Care & fabrication

As a Brazilian gabbro, Mystic Grey is a robust hard rock with low water absorption (0.3 %), DNSA-confirmed acid resistance and frost resistance as well as a Mohs hardness of 6. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone.

For interior applications we recommend an impregnation on a silane or polysiloxane basis at first installation. On polished surfaces, 5-10 years may pass between impregnation refreshments depending on use; on heavily used kitchen worktops or external applications, check every 2-3 years. Impregnation protects against deep penetration of oil, grease and pigments — on the dark groundmass such discolourations are barely visible, which makes the stone a very forgiving choice for kitchen worktops.

Daily care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually sufficient. Acidic cleaners are in principle unproblematic, but should nevertheless not be used, because they can attack the impregnation.

Mystic Grey is very well suited to kitchen worktops: cut- and scratch-resistant, insensitive to heat (hot pots and pans can be set down directly for short periods; nevertheless avoid longer heat exposure above 200 °C), DNSA-confirmed acid-resistant and with good stain repellency. With its low water absorption (0.3 %) the stone is fully weather-stable — excellently suited to external façades, terraces, stairs, pool areas and gravestones.

For pool surrounds, outdoor terraces and fountain surrounds, a slip-inhibiting textured finish is mandatory — on smooth external surfaces there is a high risk of slipping when wet. In areas with frequent salt contact (road salt, pool chlorine) we recommend an additional annual impregnation refreshment. In hot climate zones the dark base tone stores more solar energy than light stones — for pool areas in the south, combine it if necessary with locally cooled irrigation.

How do I clean and care for Mystic Grey?

As a gabbro, Mystic Grey is very easy to care for: daily care with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a microfibre cloth is sufficient. We recommend impregnation at first installation; for interior applications a refreshment interval of 5-10 years depending on use, on heavily used kitchen worktops or outdoors check every 2-3 years. Acidic cleaners are in principle unproblematic, but should nevertheless not be used. On dark surfaces fingerprints are visible — dry cleaning with a soft microfibre cloth after damp wiping is advisable.

Is Mystic Grey frost-resistant and suitable for outdoor use?

Yes, very well suited. DNSA explicitly confirms frost resistance, acid resistance AND outdoor durability of the polish — a rare combination that many stones do not fulfil. With its low water absorption (0.3 %) and high bulk density (2860 kg/m³) the stone is fully weather-stable. For external applications even a polished finish can be used without the gloss being lost quickly.

Mystic Grey or Nero Assoluto Zimbabwe — which suits better?

Both are classic dark gabbros, both are listed in the trade as granite. Nero Assoluto Zimbabwe is regarded as the absolute classic with the most even and deepest black tonality worldwide, the highest premium segment. Mystic Grey brings a somewhat lighter, anthracite grey base tone with a characteristically “irregularly clouded” mineral distribution — less even than Nero Assoluto, but with a livelier sense of depth. For absolutely classic deep black elegance, Nero Assoluto; for a clouded dark grey character with DNSA-confirmed outdoor durability of the polish, Mystic Grey.
