New Colonial Dream is an Indian granulite from southern India with a creamy yellow to warm golden ground tone, interspersed with ochre-brown vein bands and black biotite clusters. A quarry grade of the well-known Colonial Dream family. Internationally also listed as Colonial Dream Granite, Colonial Dream Light, Colonial Dream Gold, Colonial Golden Granite and Summer Yellow Granite; used for kitchen worktops, bar counters, wall claddings, floor surfaces, external façades and prestigious interior and exterior surfaces with a warm south Indian character.

New Colonial Dream is petrographically a Precambrian granulite from the south Indian charnockite-granulite province, but is listed in the trade as a granite.

About New Colonial Dream

New Colonial Dream lives from a warm golden material effect with the classic south Indian yellow granite character. The ground tone is a creamy yellow to warm golden yellow with subtle ivory undertones, shot through with characteristic ochre-brown and copper-coloured vein bands that run fluidly across the slab surface. Black biotite mica minerals are distributed in loose clusters — they give the warm, light slab image dark accents without falling into dramatic banding. Isolated burgundy-red garnet speckles and creamy white quartz sections round off the composition. On a polished surface the stone develops a warm, glowing depth effect with the characteristic “Sun-Drenched India” character — a material for architecture that seeks to combine Mediterranean warmth, natural elegance and sunny brightness.

Geologically, New Colonial Dream is a Precambrian granulite from southern India, one of the world's most productive regions for Indian yellow granite trade stones. Granulites are highly metamorphic igneous-metamorphic mixed rocks that formed under extreme pressures and temperatures (above 700 °C, at deep crustal levels) — the south Indian charnockite-granulite province extends across the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and supplies a whole family of warm golden granulite trade stones. The warm golden-yellow tone of New Colonial Dream comes from mineral sections containing iron oxide and limonite, the black accents from biotite and ferromagnesian minerals. In international trade the material runs under several synonyms: New Colonial Dream Granite, Colonial Dream Granite, Colonial Dream Light Granite, Colonial Dream Gold Granite, Summer Yellow Granite, Colonial Golden Granite and New Colonial Gold Granite. The “New” in the trade name refers to a quarry selection with a particularly intense golden-yellow colouring. At ROSSITTIS we classify New Colonial Dream as a granite in the customary way. Similar warm golden Indian granites are Kashmir Gold, Madura Gold, Yellow Italian Granite, Indian Gold and Crema Atlantida — all of them belong to the south Indian yellow charnockite family.

Technically, New Colonial Dream shows the robustness that is characteristic of Indian granulites. The Mohs hardness is 6-7 (granulites are very hard by virtue of their quartz-rich and feldspar-rich mineralogy); typical bulk densities are 2,700-2,800 kg/m³, the compressive strength 200-260 MPa, the water absorption 0.1-0.3 %. The stone is therefore acid-resistant (unlike marble or onyx), cut- and scratch-resistant, frost-resistant and well suited to heavily used applications. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar or acidic sanitary cleaners leave no etch marks. The fine-crystalline, compact structure makes the stone very polishable — on a polished surface the warm golden tones develop a luminous depth effect.

Compared with classic white Indian granites such as Kashmir White or Ivory White, New Colonial Dream brings the characteristically warm golden ground tone with more pronounced ochre-brown vein bands. Set against other yellow granulite classics such as Kashmir Gold (more intensely golden yellow, with more distinct garnet accents) or Madura Gold (somewhat cooler, with more white areas), New Colonial Dream brings a balanced warm golden character with well-distributed mineral accents. Finishes

New Colonial Dream is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish in the hard stone segment — a mirror-smooth, high-gloss surface with the highest possible colour intensity and maximum depth effect in the mineral structure. As an acid-resistant silicate stone, polished granite is easy to care for and the first choice for kitchen worktops, wall claddings and prestigious exposed surfaces.

Care & fabrication

As an Indian granulite, New Colonial Dream is a robust hard rock with low water absorption (typically 0.1-0.3 %), good acid resistance and a Mohs hardness of 6-7. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone.

For interior applications we recommend an impregnation on a silane or polysiloxane basis at initial installation. On polished surfaces, 5-10 years can pass between impregnation renewals depending on use; on heavily used kitchen worktops or in external applications, check every 2-3 years. Impregnation protects against the deep penetration of oil, grease and pigments — otherwise, discolouration can show up visibly on the lighter creamy yellow areas.

Daily care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually sufficient. Acidic cleaners are fundamentally unproblematic, but should nevertheless not be used, because they can attack the impregnation. For kitchen worktops New Colonial Dream is very well suited: cut- and scratch-resistant, insensitive to heat (hot pots and pans can be set down directly for a short time, although prolonged heat exposure above 200 °C should still be avoided), acid-resistant and with good stain repellency. The warm golden surface conceals small traces of use remarkably well. For external applications, with its low water absorption New Colonial Dream is frost-resistant and stable in the long term against the weather — outstandingly suited to external façades, terraces, staircases and pool areas. For pool surrounds, external terraces and fountain settings a slip-resistant structured finish is mandatory — on smooth external surfaces there is a high risk of slipping when wet. In areas with frequent salt contact (de-icing salt, pool chlorine) we recommend an additional annual renewal of the impregnation.

The warm golden surface with its ochre-brown accents conceals small traces of use remarkably well. For a kitchen worktop with a warm Mediterranean character and full everyday capability, the stone is a very fitting choice. For an extra easy-care surface we recommend a more matt finish rather than polished.

How do I clean and care for New Colonial Dream?

As a granulite, New Colonial Dream is very easy to care for: daily care with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a microfibre cloth is sufficient. We recommend an impregnation at initial installation; for interior applications a renewal interval of 5-10 years depending on use, and on heavily used kitchen worktops or outdoors check every 2-3 years. Acidic cleaners are fundamentally unproblematic, but should nevertheless not be used. Dry cleaning with a soft microfibre cloth after damp mopping is recommended.

New Colonial Dream or Kashmir Gold — which suits better?

Both are warm golden-yellow south Indian granulites with a similar character. Kashmir Gold shows a considerably more intense golden-yellow tone with stronger burgundy-red garnet accents — more striking and more intense in colour. New Colonial Dream brings a more balanced creamy yellow ground tone with subtler accents and ochre-brown vein bands — calmer and more restrained. For an intense golden-yellow effect with a garnet statement, Kashmir Gold; for a balanced warm golden appearance with a calm character, New Colonial Dream.
