As an Italian calcareous sandstone, Pietra Dorata Toscana is a decorative material with moderate robustness. The high water absorption of 3.7 % requires consistent sealing — sandstones are as a rule acid-resistant within the usual range of use, so that wine, lemon juice, vinegar or normal sanitary cleaners leave no conspicuous etch marks. With calcareous Mediterranean sandstones, however, strongly acidic cleaners can attack the calcareous binder components over the long term — caution is called for.
For all applications, a sealing treatment based on silane or polysiloxane is mandatory. Because of the high water absorption we recommend refreshing it every 1-2 years for internal applications and annually for external applications. Sealing protects against deep penetration by water, oil, grease and pigments — otherwise discolouration can become visibly apparent on the light golden-yellow tinting.
Day-to-day care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Consistently avoid acidic cleaners, cement film removers and strongly alkaline agents. On the textured finishes (riven, fracture-rough, bush-hammered), dirt can lodge in the open microstructure — here occasional cleaning with a soft brush and a mildly dosed stone care product is advisable.
For kitchen worktops, Pietra Dorata Toscana is not to be recommended. The high water absorption, the low hardness (Mohs hardness 4-6) and the moderate compressive strength make the material unsuitable for intensive cooking applications. For carefree kitchen worktops with a Mediterranean quality we recommend a warm beige granite or quartzite.
For floor surfaces, Pietra Dorata Toscana can be used in moderately loaded interior areas (living rooms with an entrance area for changing shoes, Mediterranean courtyard surfaces with weather protection). Because of the high water absorption, not for areas heavily exposed to moisture or high-frequency entrance areas.
For external applications, Pietra Dorata Toscana can be used well in Mediterranean climate zones or in sheltered positions with consistent sealing. Because of the high water absorption (3.7 %), the freeze-thaw resistance should be assessed on a project-specific basis for external applications heavily exposed to frost (northern Germany, the Alpine region) — as a rule of thumb, a water absorption above 3 % lies at the limit of frost resistance. For external façades in Mediterranean climate zones the stone has been proven in Tuscan architecture for centuries.
