About Quarzite Rossa

Quarzite Rossa shows an exceptionally dramatic slab character with a high, contrast-rich liveliness. The ground tone is a deep, saturated burgundy red to cherry red with subtle transitions into rosé and old-rose tones. Striking white quartz vein bands run across the slab surface, passing diagonally and irregularly through the red ground mass — they look like rays of light or frozen lightning against a fiery background. Here and there, black mineral streaks and subtle darker zones set additional accents of depth. The movement structure is slightly migmatitic and flowing, with characteristic waves and swirls that tint the red areas at differing intensities — some surfaces a saturated deep red, others with more delicate rosé transitions. Every slab image is a unique piece — with Quarzite Rossa it is particularly worthwhile to select from real slab images, because the distribution and intensity of the white vein bands and the depth of the red ground tone vary strongly from block to block. The stone is outstandingly suited to bookmatch laying (mirror-image laying), because with two slabs mirrored side by side the diagonal white vein bands produce dramatic, V-shaped large-scale motifs.

Geologically, Quarzite Rossa is a Brazilian metamorphic quartzite. The intense red colouring comes from haematitic iron oxide mineralisations that formed during the original sedimentation and the subsequent metamorphosis. The white quartz vein bands are secondary quartz veins that were mineralised during the metamorphosis by hydrothermal solutions along the stress fractures. In international trade the material is listed under several designations — as “Quarzite Rossa” and, in Brazilian exotic ranges, partly as Red Quartzite Brazil or Cherry Red Quartzite. The designation is more a generic Italian trade description (“red quartzite”) than an unambiguous quarry name. Related red Brazilian quartzites are Cosmopolitan Quartzite (with a white-black-burgundy composition), Iron Red Quartzite (with denser white bands) and Red Stardust (with finer vein markings).

The typical technical properties of Brazilian red quartzites are high compressive strength, very low water absorption (considerably below 0.4 %), a Mohs hardness of around 7, full frost resistance and full acid resistance thanks to their silicate character. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar or sanitary cleaners leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone — an important property that qualifies Quarzite Rossa for kitchen worktops.

Compared with other red Brazilian quartzites, Quarzite Rossa brings the most intense, most saturated burgundy tone with the most dramatic white quartz veins. Cosmopolitan Quartzite shows a more multicoloured composition with more black and brown tones; Iron Red Quartzite has a denser, more directional white band structure; Red Stardust shows finer vein markings with smaller white shimmering points. Set against classic red granite grades such as Multicolor Guayana (a migmatite with smaller white plagioclase flecks and black cloud structures), Imperial Red (evenly fine-patterned) or Rosso Balmoral (a Finnish rapakivi granite), Quarzite Rossa brings the most expressive and most dramatic red slab appearance, with the highest recognition value. Finishes

Quarzite Rossa is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish for quartzite — a glossy surface with the highest possible colour intensity and a pronounced sense of depth. Depending on the mineral composition, the effect can be satin-gloss in places. As a silicate rock it is fully acid-resistant and scratch-hard — ideal for kitchen worktops and feature surfaces.

Satin-honed

The surface is brushed — softer minerals are removed in a targeted way, creating a slight depth and a matt appearance. Veined quartzites gain a special character in this way. Acid-resistant and scratch-resistant, easy to care for in daily use — a popular alternative to a polish in modern kitchens and living spaces.

Care & fabrication

As a Brazilian quartzite, Quarzite Rossa is a robust hard rock with low water absorption, full acid resistance and a Mohs hardness of around 7. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone — the stone is considerably easier to care for and well suited to intensive everyday use.

For interior applications we recommend an impregnation on a silane or polysiloxane basis at initial installation. On polished surfaces a renewal every 5–8 years is sufficient depending on use; on heavily used kitchen worktops or bar counters, check every 2–3 years. Impregnation protects against the deep penetration of oil, grease and pigments — otherwise, on the heterogeneous surface of Quarzite Rossa, discolouration can show up particularly on the lighter white quartz veins.

Daily care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually sufficient. Acidic cleaners are fundamentally unproblematic, but should nevertheless not be used, because they can attack the impregnation. For kitchen worktops Quarzite Rossa is outstandingly suited: cut- and scratch-resistant, insensitive to heat (hot pots and pans can be set down directly for a short time, although prolonged heat exposure above 200 °C should still be avoided), acid-resistant and with good stain repellency thanks to its low water absorption. The expressive, vein-accentuated surface conceals small traces of use remarkably well. The intense red tone makes the stone the ideal choice for designer kitchens with a dramatic material composition — crumbs, flour and food residues are less visible than on light granite grades. For external applications we recommend a project-specific data sheet check of the frost resistance before ordering. If released for external use, a matt, structured finish is advisable for slip resistance. Polished external surfaces can show minimal losses of gloss after years in locations with heavy UV exposure.

The dark, warm ground tone stores solar energy in hot climate zones — for pool areas in the south, combine it where appropriate with locally cooled irrigation.
