Quartzite from Brazil

Vittra Crystal

Vittra Crystal (also Vittra Quartzite, Vetra Crystal Quartzite, Crystal Vittra or Brazilian Vittra) is a dramatically figured Brazilian premium quartzite from Bahia with an unmistakable three-colour composition: deep storm-grey and graphite-black areas, arctic white passages with translucent crystalline quartz zones and strong wine-red to oxide-red vein bands that run dramatically through the slab image. High-strength, frost-resistant and fully acid-resistant — used for premium kitchen worktops, designed display counters, prestige wall claddings, floor coverings, pool surrounds and statement surfaces with the highest material demands.

About Vittra Crystal

Vittra Crystal is an exceptionally figured Brazilian premium quartzite that has been established since the 2010s as a spectacular statement material in international high-end kitchen and design architecture. Brazil is among the world's leading suppliers of premium quartzites with a dramatic, painterly material signature, and Vittra Crystal ranks among the most theatrical and visually arresting representatives of this family. The stone is won in the state of Bahia in Brazil, a region that is among the most important suppliers of exotic Brazilian quartzites. Vittra Crystal is a specific colour and quality variant of the Vittra quartzite family — the designation “Crystal” refers to the translucent, crystal-clear quartz-rich areas that lend the stone an unmistakable mineral, glassy character. On the international market the stone is traded under several parallel trade names: Vittra Crystal, Vittra Quartzite, Vetra Crystal Quartzite, Crystal Vittra and Brazilian Vittra.

Finishes

Vittra Crystal is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish for quartzite — a glossy surface with the highest possible colour intensity and a pronounced sense of depth. Depending on the mineral composition, the effect can be satin-gloss in places. As a silicate rock it is fully acid-resistant and scratch-hard — ideal for kitchen worktops and feature surfaces.

Care & fabrication

As a Brazilian quartzite, Vittra Crystal is distinctly easy to care for and exceptionally robust — the quartzitic mineralogy makes the stone acid-insensitive towards lemon juice, vinegar, wine, cola and all household acids, which distinguishes it favourably from marbles and limestones. Indoors, warm water with a pH-neutral stone cleaning agent is sufficient for daily cleaning; aggressive household cleaners and abrasive sponges are unnecessary. On polished kitchen worktops, a sealing treatment with a solvent-based sealer suitable for hard rock is advisable after installation and again every 2 to 3 years, in order to reduce the absorption of oil, grease and intensely coloured foods over the long term. In the dark areas of the material signature, water marks and pigment stains are less visible than on light stones — the robustness typical of quartzite makes the stone a low-maintenance choice for intensive everyday applications. Soiling should nevertheless be taken up promptly, ideally within a few hours. Outdoors, regular cleaning with clear water and occasionally a soft brush is sufficient; where green growth takes hold in shaded positions, commercially available algae and moss cleaners can be used. Hot pots can be set down directly on the worktop — Vittra Crystal is heat-resistant.

Frequently asked questions

What does the designation “Vittra Crystal” mean?

The name “Vittra Crystal” refers to a specific colour and quality variant of the Vittra quartzite family from Bahia/Brazil. The addition “Crystal” denotes the translucent, crystal-clear quartz-rich areas in the slab image that lend the stone an unmistakable mineral, glassy character — these arctic white passages with translucent crystalline quartz zones are the defining feature that gives the stone its name. Vittra Crystal, Vittra Quartzite, Vetra Crystal Quartzite, Crystal Vittra and Brazilian Vittra are synonymous trade names from parallel international marketing.

What are the three colour components in Vittra Crystal?

Vittra Crystal shows a characteristic three-colour composition with three different phases of mineralisation: deep storm-grey and graphite-coloured areas from organic, carbon-bearing or biotite-rich components in the original sandstone sediments; arctic white passages with translucent crystalline quartz zones from pure quartz and calcite mineralisations; and strong wine-red to oxide-red vein bands from iron-oxide-rich mineralisations that ran through the quartzite in tectonic zones of weakness. This complex mineralogical history produces the spectacular theatrical slab image that is rare on the international quartzite market.

Is Vittra Crystal suitable for kitchen worktops?

Outstandingly so. Properties typical of quartzite — complete acid resistance, high compressive strength (130.68 MPa), low water absorption (only 0.13 %), heat resistance and high hardness (Mohs 7) — qualify Vittra Crystal without restriction for intensively used kitchen worktops. The spectacular three-colour appearance with translucent crystalline accents makes it one of the most dramatic statement choices for design kitchens with a wish for an unmistakable material character. A sealing treatment after installation and every 2 to 3 years is recommended, but is not strictly necessary for function.

Is Vittra Crystal suitable for bookmatched installation?

Outstandingly so. With mirror-image laying of adjacent slabs, the dramatic three-colour structures create particularly impressive, almost surrealist symmetrical large-scale patterns — bookmatched installation makes Vittra Crystal one of the most spectacular statement materials for wall claddings, bar counter back walls and prestige accent walls in interior architecture of the highest order. The viewing and the choice of slabs should be sampled before installation in order to achieve the optimum three-colour symmetry.

Is Vittra Crystal suitable for pool surrounds?

Outstandingly so. The frost and acid resistance typical of quartzite, the low water absorption of only 0.13 % and the high compressive strength qualify Vittra Crystal without restriction for demanding pool surrounds — including in chlorinated salt-water pools, since quartzite is chemically very inert. On pool surrounds that are walked on, the choice of a matt, textured finish is to be recommended. The spectacular three-colour appearance is particularly impressive in luxurious pool surroundings.

Which slab formats are usual in Vittra Crystal?

Standard large formats from the Brazilian quarries lie typically between 280 × 160 cm and 320 × 200 cm at thicknesses of 2 cm and 3 cm. Through ROSSITTIS, special thicknesses (1 cm and 1.5 cm for lightweight wall claddings, 4 cm and more for stairs, paving and massive applications) can also be sourced. Because of the high slab variation and the premium popularity of the material, slab sampling (viewing before delivery) is particularly important with Vittra Crystal — the specific slab should be assessed before installation, since each individual one is unique with its own three-colour composition.

What does Vittra Crystal cost?

The price depends on the batch, thickness, surface finish and fabrication — with natural stone there is no serious flat rate per square metre. Business customers see prices once their B2B account is activated; private customers receive a complete quote through a fabricator near them.
