About Travertin Noce V C Romano

Travertin Noce V/C Romano lives from a warm, walnut-brown material effect. The base tone moves between a medium grey-brown and a strong walnut, run through with lighter cream-coloured bands and the characteristic travertine cavities. The designation V/C stands for vein cut — the cut is made perpendicular to the growth axis of the material, which makes the original layering visible as a distinct horizontal banded structure. The slab appearance is warm, unmistakably Italian and has been one of the most important architectural materials in the Mediterranean since antiquity. It is precisely this Mediterranean warmth and tradition that makes the stone interesting for wall claddings, floor areas, staircases, façades, pool surrounds and prestigious interior fit-outs.

Geologically, Travertin Noce V/C Romano is a sedimentary travertine from the classic Roman travertine belt in Lazio. Specifically, the material comes from the Valle Pilella in the province of Rome, immediately adjoining the world-famous Tivoli and Rapolano travertine deposits — the same geological complex from which the travertine for the Colosseum, St Peter's Basilica and countless classical Roman buildings was also won. Travertines are formed from mineral-rich spring water that precipitates calcium carbonate — the characteristic cavities are traces of water bubbles and plant remains during deposition. The warm brown colouring of the Noce variant comes from iron-oxide-rich admixtures. On the market the material also runs under the trade names Travertino Romano Noce, Travertino Tivoli Noce, Roman Noce Travertine and Tivoli Noce Travertine.

Technically, Travertin Noce V/C Romano behaves like a classic Italian travertine: a dense carbonate structure with characteristic cavities, good workability, capable of taking a polish. Chemically the stone is acid-sensitive: wine, lemon juice, vinegar or acidic bathroom cleaners leave etch marks on the material surface. In fabrication, the natural cavities are usually filled with transparent or colour-matched resin or cement mortar — the end product is a smooth, aesthetically closed surface. There are also selections with open pores (unfilled), which are used as the more rustic variant.

Travertin Noce V C Romano is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Filled + polished

Natural pores and cavities are filled with a special filler compound and thus closed — the surface is then polished. The highest possible colour intensity and gloss; depending on the mineral composition, the material can at most be polished to a semi-gloss. Easier to care for than the unfilled variant.

Care & fabrication

As a carbonate travertine, Travertin Noce V/C Romano is acid-sensitive. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, bathroom cleaners or descalers leave etch marks on the material surface — visible as matt shadows or a loss of gloss.

For all applications, an impregnation on a silane or polysiloxane basis is mandatory. It prevents the penetration of water, oil and dyes — particularly important with travertine because of the characteristic cavities. On polished surfaces we recommend refreshing the impregnation every 1-2 years, and more frequently on heavily used floor areas.

Daily care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft microfibre cloth or mop. Avoid vinegar cleaners, cement haze removers, acidic bathroom cleaners and strongly alkaline products. Wine, coffee, oil, lemon juice or cosmetic products should not stand on the surface for long.

For kitchen worktops, Travertin Noce is only suitable to a limited degree. The material is classically used more for wall claddings, floor areas and exterior applications. Anyone who wants the warm Italian material character in the kitchen should reckon with patina or choose a more care-friendly quartzite or granite alternative.

Outdoors, travertine can be used in sheltered locations given proper laying with a fall and an intact impregnation.
