Supernova is a dramatic Brazilian exotic quartzite with a dark taupe-grey to bronze-coloured groundmass and striking copper-red and burgundy vein bands whose flowing movement structure recalls cosmic currents or lava flows. About Supernova

Supernova shows an unusually dramatic slab character. The base tone is a warm, deep mixture of taupe-grey, anthracite and bronze-coloured areas with subtle, metallic-looking shimmering zones. Characteristic flowing bands in copper red, burgundy and rust run across the slab surface — the movement structure recalls cosmic currents, lava flows or weathered bronze patina. Here and there, dark grey sweeping bands set additional depth accents, while isolated creamy light quartz veins create subtle points of light in the otherwise warm, dark composition. On a polished surface the stone develops an extraordinary depth effect — the copper-red veins catch the light and dramatically intensify the cosmic character. Every slab is a unique piece — with Supernova it is particularly worth making the selection from real slab images, because the distribution and intensity of the red vein bands vary considerably from block to block. The stone is outstandingly suited to bookmatch installation (mirror-image laying), because with two slabs mirrored side by side the flowing vein bands produce symmetrical, dramatic large-scale motifs.

Geologically, Supernova is listed as a Brazilian exotic quartzite. In international trade the material also runs under the designation Supernova Crystallo in some cases. The mineralogy corresponds to that of typical Brazilian hard stones from the Bahia and Espírito Santo belt. The typical technical properties of Brazilian exotic quartzites are high compressive strength, very low water absorption (well below 0.4 %), a Mohs hardness of around 7, full frost resistance and full acid resistance thanks to the silicate character. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar or sanitary cleaners leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone. The metallic, bronze-coloured areas in the slab image typically stem from iron oxide or amphibole mineralisations; the copper-red bands are produced by haematitic or limonitic iron mineralisations during metamorphosis.

Compared with more voluminous Brazilian statement quartzites such as Fusion (with its dramatic black-white-rust band structure) or Belvedere (with its deep black-white-copper-red contrast), Supernova brings a warmer, less contrast-rich composition with the characteristic taupe-bronze-burgundy character. Compared with dark, slate-like hard stones such as Negresco or Tempest Black, Supernova appears livelier, with considerably more flowing movement and chromatic warmth. For architectural projects with a dramatic cosmic character — high-end designer kitchens, prestigious hotel wall claddings, exclusive bar counters in restaurants or sculptural fireplace surrounds — Supernova is a very exclusive choice in the upper premium segment of Brazilian exotic hard stones.

Finishes

Supernova is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish for quartzite — a glossy surface with the highest possible colour intensity and a pronounced sense of depth. Depending on the mineral composition, the effect can be satin-gloss in places. As a silicate rock it is fully acid-resistant and scratch-hard — ideal for kitchen worktops and feature surfaces.

Satin-honed

The surface is brushed — softer minerals are removed in a targeted way, creating a slight depth and a matt appearance. Veined quartzites gain a special character in this way. Acid-resistant and scratch-resistant, easy to care for in daily use — a popular alternative to a polish in modern kitchens and living spaces.

Care & fabrication

As a Brazilian quartzite, Supernova is a robust hard stone with low water absorption, full acid resistance and a Mohs hardness of around 7. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone — the stone is considerably easier to care for and well suited to intensive everyday use.

For internal applications we recommend an impregnation on a silane or polysiloxane basis at first installation. On polished surfaces a refresh every 5–8 years is sufficient, depending on use; on heavily used kitchen worktops or light quartz areas, check every 2–3 years. Impregnation protects against deep penetration by oil, grease and pigments — on the heterogeneous surface of Supernova discolouration can otherwise show up, particularly on the lighter quartz veins.

Daily care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually sufficient. Acidic cleaners are fundamentally unproblematic, but should nevertheless not be used because they can attack the impregnation. For kitchen worktops Supernova is well suited: cut- and scratch-resistant, insensitive to heat (hot pots and pans can be set down directly for short periods, though prolonged heat exposure above 200 °C should still be avoided), acid-resistant and with good stain repellence thanks to the low water absorption. The expressive, vein-dominated surface conceals small marks of use surprisingly well. For external applications we recommend a project-specific data sheet check of the frost resistance before ordering. In areas with frequent salt contact (de-icing salt, pool chlorine) we recommend an additional annual impregnation refresh. The dark taupe-bronze base tone stores a great deal of solar energy in hot climate zones — for pool areas in the south, combine it with locally cooled irrigation where appropriate.

Is Supernova suitable for bookmatch installation?

Outstandingly suited. In bookmatch installation (mirror-image laying of two slabs) the flowing copper-red vein bands produce symmetrical, dramatic large-scale motifs — such as cosmic-looking mirrored currents or lava-like symmetry images. For prestigious wall claddings, bar counters and designer statement surfaces, bookmatch is a very fitting composition.

How do I clean and care for Supernova?

As a Brazilian quartzite, Supernova is very easy to look after: daily care with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a microfibre cloth is sufficient. We recommend impregnation at first installation; for internal applications a refresh interval of 5–8 years depending on use, and for heavily used kitchen worktops a check every 2–3 years. Acidic cleaners are fundamentally unproblematic, but should nevertheless not be used. Dry cleaning with a soft microfibre cloth after damp mopping is advisable.

Is Supernova frost-resistant and suitable for outdoor use?

As silicate rocks, Brazilian quartzites are fundamentally frost-resistant. Before external applications, and particularly large-area façades or pool areas, we recommend a project-specific check of the frost resistance. If released for external use, a matt, textured surface finish is mandatory for slip resistance in wet conditions.
