About Thala Beige
Thala Beige comes from the quarry district around the northern Tunisian town of Thala in the Kef governorate, a region in the northern foothills of the Atlas mountain range near the Algerian border. The North African carbonate formations of this region have for decades been among the most important suppliers of natural dimension stone in North Africa and supply predominantly European and Middle Eastern markets with beige and cream-coloured limestones. Geologically it is a marine limestone of the Cretaceous period, deposited in shallow, warm seas on the Tethys carbonate platform — the fine-grained, even texture and the light cream colour are characteristic of this depositional environment with slow, biogenic carbonate formation from microscopically small shell and skeletal remains of foraminifera, algae and other micro-organisms.
Visually, Thala Beige is marked by an exceptionally even, calm warm cream beige look. The stone shows a homogeneous base tone without pronounced grain or dramatic veining, interspersed with occasional fine trace fossils and subtle nuances that lend it a lively, natural and never boring appearance. On close inspection, small fossil inclusions can be made out that give the surface a restrained animation. This calm, even material signature is the architectural strength of Thala Beige — it is the ideal stone for large-area laying in which a warm, uniform background is wanted that does not compete with other materials for attention. The marketing label “Royal” in many trade names refers to the marketing of the particularly evenly coloured premium lots, but is not an independent petrographic distinguishing feature — it is the same stone in a selected quality.
Technically, Thala Beige shows the values of a medium-strength porous Mediterranean limestone: bulk density between 2630 and 2670 kg/m³, compressive strength of 75.5 MPa, flexural strength of 14.69 MPa and water absorption of around 4.3 %. The water absorption is markedly higher than with dense karst limestones or marbles — typical of Mediterranean limestones with a certain natural microporosity. This raised water absorption requires proper sealing in external applications and compels a careful assessment of frost resistance for every application — particular attention is therefore called for on openly weathered horizontal external surfaces with pronounced freeze-thaw cycles in Central European winters. In properly sealed and structurally protected applications (façade claddings with plinth protection, stairs beneath a canopy, pool surrounds), Thala Beige has been proven for decades in Mediterranean as well as Central European building applications. Like all carbonate rocks it is acid-sensitive and reacts to citric acid, vinegar or acidic cleaners with matt etching.
In interior fit-out, Thala Beige is a proven choice for Mediterranean-inspired, classic and contemporary architectural schemes. Classic applications are floor surfaces in entrance halls, living spaces and hotel lobbies, wall claddings, stair treads, skirtings, window sills and bathrooms. The warm cream beige shade creates immediate atmospheric warmth and harmonises with timber fittings, natural materials such as linen and wool, with brass and bronze accents as much as with clear white and muted earth tones. Outdoors, Thala Beige finds use as a façade cladding in Mediterranean and North African architectural languages, as plinth slabs, stair treads, pool surrounds and fountain surrounds — the warm shade is particularly impressive under southern light and harmonises with vegetation and Mediterranean architecture. Satin-honed
The surface is brushed — softer minerals are selectively removed, creating a subtle depth and a matte appearance. Strongly veined limestones in particular gain a characterful look and feel this way. The more matte finish conceals small etch marks better than a polish and stands up better to everyday use on heavily used interior surfaces.
Tumbled
Through friction with rock aggregates and water in a rotating drum, a matt surface is created with slightly chipped edges and a satin-like tactile quality. It looks naturally aged. Suitable exclusively for wall and floor tiles, not for raw slabs — the standard choice for Mediterranean and antiqued design concepts.
Care & fabrication
As a limestone, Thala Beige is acid-sensitive, and because of the comparatively high water absorption of 4.3 %, sealing is particularly important. Indoors, use only warm water with a pH-neutral stone cleaning product for daily cleaning — acidic household cleaners, vinegar, citric acid descalers or other acidic substances cause matt etched patches that can only be reversed by professional repolishing or regrinding. Take up spilt acidic liquids promptly with clear water. A professional sealer after laying, and then every 1 to 2 years, is recommended indoors and obligatory outdoors — it decisively reduces water absorption, protects against freeze-thaw damage, mitigates the take-up of pigments (red wine, coffee, olive oil) and considerably extends the service life on horizontal external surfaces. In the bathroom, water droplets should be squeegeed off after showering, since standing water on unsealed spots can lead to discolouration over the long term. De-icing salt in winter is absolutely to be avoided on Thala Beige external surfaces — salt crystallisation in the relatively porous structure can lead to considerable spalling; chloride-free de-icing agents are the gentler alternative. With pool surrounds, besides sealing it is also important to bear chlorine-bearing splash water in mind: care products insensitive to salt water are to be preferred.
