Trani Fiorito

Geologically, Trani Fiorito is a Cretaceous sedimentary limestone (roughly 100 million years old) from the Apricena quarrying area near the port city of Trani in the province of Bari, in the southern Italian region of Apulia (Puglia). The Apulia region is Italy's heel on the Adriatic and has been one of the most important limestone provinces in Europe since Roman antiquity. The whole Trani stone family comprises several selections: Trani Bronzetto, Trani Chiaro, Trani Filetto Rosso and Trani Fiorito (with the characteristic blossom-like structures). Petrographically, Trani Fiorito is a biomicritic limestone — mineralogically it consists of more than 96 % calcium carbonate (calcite) with traces of iron oxides (responsible for the pink tone), manganese, aluminium and further accessory minerals. In the trade the stone is traditionally classified as 'marble' — a trade convention common in Italy for high-quality polishable sedimentary limestones. Petrographically correct is 'limestone'. Several synonyms circulate in international trade: Apricena Fiorito (after the specific quarrying area), Fiorito di Apricena (the original Italian designation), Pietra di Trani Fiorito, Trani Stone Fiorito, Musicco Fiorito (after a principal producer) and Apulia Stone.

Technically, Trani Fiorito shows exceptionally strong values for a sedimentary limestone: bulk density 2,650–2,710 kg/m³ (very high — comparable with dense granites), compressive strength 185 MPa (185 MPa dry / 175 MPa after frost — exceptionally high for limestone), flexural strength 13.3 MPa, water absorption only 0.13 % (extremely low — at the level of dense granites), abrasion resistance 2.8 cm³/50cm², linear thermal expansion 0.47 mm/m/100K, Mohs hardness 3–4 (typical for calcite limestone). The low water absorption and the high density qualify Trani Fiorito as a premium limestone in the upper strength class — the strength values are higher than those of many marbles. IMPORTANT: despite its exceptional density, Trani Fiorito is acid-sensitive as a calcite limestone — wine, lemon juice, vinegar or sanitary cleaners leave etch marks immediately. Furthermore: polished stability outdoors is NOT durable (DNSA: 'polish not durable outdoors') — UV exposure and weathering lead to loss of gloss. Both aspects must be deliberately allowed for when selecting the material.

At ROSSITTIS we carry Trani Fiorito as a raw slab in 10, 15, 20 and 30 mm thickness (standard thicknesses for internal wall and floor applications) and for project-specific cutting to size. It is also available as tile, skirting, stair and window sill. The available standard finish is polished (the classic Mediterranean gloss with full warm depth).

Compared with other Italian limestones, Trani Fiorito is a characteristically Apulian choice: Travertino Romano (Tivoli, with pronounced travertine pores) has a more dramatic slab appearance; Pietra di Lecce (Apulia, softer and finer) is paler; Botticino Classico (Lombard) is more finely figured. Within the Trani stone family, the Fiorito selection is the one with more pronounced stylolitic structures — the Bronzetto variant has a warmer bronze tone, the Chiaro variant is paler and more uniform, the Filetto Rosso variant shows more pronounced red veins.
