Violet Tropical

Violet Tropical is a Brazilian granite with an unusually pronounced violet-lilac tinting as its groundmass, interspersed with light grey quartz and feldspar speckles as well as black biotite points. Internationally also traded as Gran Violet, Gran Violet Granite and Violeta Granite; used for expressive kitchen worktops, bar counters, wall claddings, floor surfaces and prestige internal and external surfaces with an unusually rare violet character.

About Violet Tropical

Violet Tropical thrives on an unusual violet material effect — violet is a very rare natural colour in the natural stone range, which makes Violet Tropical an expressive statement material. The ground tone is a medium to strong violet lilac through to rosé-violet with warm undertones, interspersed with light grey to creamy white quartz and feldspar speckles distributed as fine light accents through the violet groundmass. Black biotite mica minerals are distributed in loose clusters — they give the slab image the characteristic “pepper” quality of classical granites. The fine-grained structure and the almost even distribution of minerals make Violet Tropical an expressive yet nonetheless restrained statement stone. On a polished surface the stone develops a warm, glowing depth effect with the unusual violet shimmer as its visual highlight.

Geologically, Violet Tropical is a Brazilian granite with an unusual violet colouring. The rare tinting derives from manganese- and/or iron-bearing mineral zones within the potassium feldspar, which give the stone its characteristic lilac-violet ground tone. On the international market the material is marketed under several synonyms: Violet Tropical, Violet Tropical Granite, Gran Violet, Gran Violet Granite and Violeta Granite. The database classifies the rock as a migmatite, which reflects the migmatitic genesis in the original quarry region — the quarry classification can vary between granite and migmatite depending on the sorted batch.

Technically, Violet Tropical shows exceptional values. The bulk density lies at 2,630 kg/m³, the compressive strength at an impressive 229.5 MPa (among the highest values for Brazilian granites), the flexural strength at a considerable 20.2 MPa and the water absorption at a low 0.15-0.25 %. The Mohs hardness lies at 6-7. The stone is therefore acid-resistant (unlike marble or limestone), cut- and scratch-resistant, frost-resistant and outstandingly suited to heavily loaded applications — wine, lemon juice, vinegar or acidic sanitary cleaners leave no etch marks. The high compressive strength supports heavy static loading.

Compared with classical pink-red granite standards such as Belorizonte or Rosa Beta, Violet Tropical brings a cooler, markedly more violet ground tone — a very rare colouring that has scarcely any alternative in the worldwide natural stone range. Set against a purely pink granite, Violet Tropical is cooler and richer in contrast with darker violet areas. Finishes

Violet Tropical is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish in the hard stone segment — a mirror-smooth, high-gloss surface with the highest possible colour intensity and maximum depth effect in the mineral structure. As an acid-resistant silicate stone, polished granite is easy to care for and the first choice for kitchen worktops, wall claddings and prestigious exposed surfaces.

Care & fabrication

As a Brazilian granite, Violet Tropical is an exceptionally robust hard rock with low water absorption (0.15-0.25 %), good acid resistance and a Mohs hardness of 6-7. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone.

For internal applications we recommend a sealing treatment based on silane or polysiloxane at first installation. On polished surfaces, 5-10 years can pass between refreshes of the sealing treatment depending on use; on heavily used kitchen worktops or external applications, check it every 2-3 years. Sealing protects against deep penetration by oil, grease and pigments — otherwise discolouration can show up on the lighter quartz speckles, while the violet groundmass conceals soiling visually.

Day-to-day care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually sufficient. Acidic cleaners are in principle unproblematic, but should nevertheless not be used, because they can attack the sealing treatment. For kitchen worktops, Violet Tropical is very well suited: cut- and scratch-resistant, insensitive to heat (hot pots and pans can be set down directly for short periods, though longer exposure to heat above 200 °C should nevertheless be avoided), acid-resistant and with good stain repellency. The high compressive strength of 229.5 MPa supports heavier static loading. The expressive violet surface conceals small signs of use remarkably well. For external applications, Violet Tropical is frost-resistant and weather-stable over the long term thanks to its low water absorption — outstandingly suited to external façades, terraces, stairs and pool areas. For pool surrounds, external terraces and fountain surrounds, a slip-resistant textured finish is mandatory — on smooth external surfaces there is a high risk of slipping when wet. In areas with frequent contact with salt (road salt, pool chlorine) we recommend an additional annual refresh of the sealing treatment.

How do I clean and care for Violet Tropical?

As a granite, Violet Tropical is very easy to care for: daily care with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a microfibre cloth is sufficient. We recommend a sealing treatment at first installation; for internal applications a refresh interval of 5-10 years depending on use, on heavily used kitchen worktops or outdoors check it every 2-3 years. Acidic cleaners are in principle unproblematic, but should nevertheless not be used. Dry cleaning with a soft microfibre cloth after damp wiping is advisable.

Is Violet Tropical frost-resistant and suitable for outdoor use?
