About Atlantic Stone
Atlantic Stone works through a deep, quiet dark grey to anthracite ground tone with a fine mineral structure. Occasional pale mineral points and subtle calcite veins stand out in the dense matrix — a restrained, almost technical feel that does not push the material into the foreground but works as a quiet, dark background. It is precisely this legibility that makes the stone interesting for floors, stair arrangements, façade cladding, pool surrounds and prestige external architecture — wherever a consistently dark, robust material effect is called for.
Geologically, Atlantic Stone is a volcanic hard rock from Chinese deposits. In the natural stone trade the material is assigned to the porphyry or rhyolite family — both classic volcanic rocks formed by the solidification of silica-rich magmas at or near the earth's surface. The fine-grained, dense structure and the dark ground tone are typical of this rock group. At ROSSITTIS, Atlantic Stone runs in the basalt family, which covers all volcanic natural stone ranges.
Technically, Atlantic Stone benefits from this volcanic mineralogy: acid-resistant, frost-proof, high compressive and flexural strength. Wine, lemon, vinegar or acidic bathroom cleaners leave no etch marks on the polished surface — a decisive advantage over calcareous marbles and limestones. Water absorption is low, and frost resistance is very good, as is typical for the volcanic rock family. The stone is therefore outstandingly suited to external applications, pool surrounds, terraces and façades, where many marbles would fail.

Compared with basalt from Italy or Vietnam, the material brings a slightly lighter, livelier mineral structure. For modern external architecture with a dark, robust material character, Atlantic Stone is a very fitting choice. Anyone looking for maximum drama in a black stone is better served by a black granite such as Nero Assoluto or a black marble such as Nero Marquina.

Finishes
Atlantic Stone is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.
Polished
Polishing produces a glossy surface with the highest possible colour intensity and a pronounced depth to the mineral inclusions typical of porphyry. As a silicate stone it is acid-resistant and easy to maintain. A prestigious finish for wall cladding, kitchen worktops and designed visible surfaces with a powerful material effect.
Satin-honed
The surface is brushed — softer minerals are removed in a targeted way, creating a slight depth with a matt appearance. As with granite it is easy to care for and suited to everyday use, and acid-resistant. A restrained finish that gives the characteristic porphyry minerals a subtle, matt stage.
Polished, reverse satin-honed
A slab usable on both sides: a polished face with the highest possible colour intensity and mirror gloss, and a satin reverse with a matt, brushed character. A flexible construction for applications in which gloss and matt sides are wanted depending on the installation setting — acid-resistant as a silicate stone.
Care & fabrication
As a volcanic hard rock, Atlantic Stone is completely acid-resistant — wine, lemon, vinegar, coffee or descalers leave no etch marks on the surface. That is the decisive difference from calcareous marbles and limestones and makes the material easy to look after in the kitchen, bathroom and outdoors.
For kitchen worktops and vanity tops we recommend a single silane- or polysiloxane-based sealing. It prevents the penetration of oily and greasy soiling, which on dark surfaces can otherwise become visible as pale shadows. For interior wall and floor surfaces a sealer is optional, but it is worthwhile in heavily used areas.
Daily care is carried out with clear warm water and a soft microfibre cloth. For heavier soiling, use a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner. Hot pots and pans can be set down directly — volcanic rocks are heat-resistant.
Fingerprints and water marks are more visible on polished dark stone than on pale or textured surfaces. The surface finishes currently held in stock are listed in the »Finishes« block further down.
Outdoors, Atlantic Stone is frost-proof and stable over the long term without further protective measures. Rinse off de-icing salt, pollen or leaves with clear water in spring; a stone cleaner is enough once or twice a year.
