Emperador Light Turco

Emperador Light Turco is the Turkish variant of the classic Emperador Light dimension stone from the Anatolian provinces of Bursa, Afyon and Burdur – listed in the international stone trade as "Turkish marble", petrographically a dense, polishable limestone. The slab shows a warm mid- to dark-brown ground tone with a characteristic dense white calcite vein network in a branched, tree-like distribution and subtle breccia-like clast zones. At ROSSITTIS we fabricate Emperador Light Turco into classic bathroom fit-outs, wall claddings with bookmatch mirroring, interior floors, stairs, window sills and prestige Mediterranean-elegant accent elements with a warm oriental natural stone character.

About Emperador Light Turco

Background. Emperador Light Turco is the Turkish variant of the world-famous Emperador Light dimension stone family. Several "Emperador" grades are offered in the international stone trade under similar trade names – with producing countries in Spain (Murcia, Yecla, Alicante – the historic and most widely traded variant), Turkey (Bursa, Afyon, Burdur), and occasionally Italy and Iran as well. The suffix "Turco" unambiguously marks the Turkish provenance and distinguishes the grade from the more commonly traded Spanish Emperador Light. The Turkish producing regions of Bursa (on the Marmara coast), Afyon (central Anatolia) and Burdur (south-western Anatolia) are among the largest natural stone producing regions in the world – Turkey has been the global market leader in natural stone exports since the early 2000s.

Care & fabrication

Cleaning. In everyday use, warm water, a soft cloth or a clean mop and a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner are sufficient. Mild all-purpose cleaners without any acid content and mild washing-up foam are suitable. Take up spilled liquids promptly – the material is acid-sensitive, and every drop of vinegar, wine, lemon, tomato or cola can leave an etch mark on the material surface.

Do not use. Acidic cleaners of any kind – descalers (vinegar, citric acid, formic acid), sanitary cleaners with an acid content, WC cleaners, wheel cleaners, oven sprays. Even diluted acids etch calcite rocks immediately and leave dull patches that can only be remedied by professional re-polishing. Aggressive scouring pads or abrasive pastes are likewise taboo.

Sealing. Mandatory for all applications with a risk of water or soiling – bathroom, kitchen, entrance area. A premium sealer with silane/siloxane-based stone protection guards against grease, oil, wine, coffee and water stains, but cannot remove the acid sensitivity. The sealer should be refreshed regularly (every 1 – 2 years on smooth surfaces, every 3 – 5 years on matt surfaces).

Bathroom. A classic application – the strength of this grade. Usable as wall and floor surface, washstand and shower – with proper waterproofing to DIN 18534 and a premium sealer. Note: anti-limescale sprays and bathroom cleaners with an acid content must be avoided at all costs, because they etch the calcite surface matt immediately.

Kitchen. Recommended only with reservations. Wine, vinegar, lemon, tomato juice and cola leave immediately visible etch marks on the material surface. Anyone wanting to minimise acid marks should choose a more matt surface finish with a premium sealer. For an acid-proof warm brown kitchen worktop we recommend switching to a warm-toned quartzite or a porcelain with an Emperador look.

Floor and stairs. A classic application. With a compressive strength of 113 MPa and water absorption of 0.2 %, Emperador Light Turco is structurally fully load-bearing for heavily used entrance areas and interior staircases. For floor applications we recommend a more matt surface finish with a premium sealer.

Outdoors. Suitable only with reservations. With a more matt surface finish and careful installation with good drainage, Emperador Light Turco can be used outdoors – but we recommend application under a canopy or loggia. A polished external application loses its gloss within a few years in the Central European climate through precipitation and freeze-thaw cycles. Frost resistance is not officially documented. De-icing salt is problematic on calcite rocks and should be avoided.

Scratches and repair. Where there are dull patches, etch marks or light scratches on the polished surface, a specialised stonemason or joint-technology firm can locally re-polish the slab with diamond pastes. Deeper mechanical damage can be partly disguised with pigmented calcite-based repair mortars.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of material is Emperador Light Turco?

Petrographically a dense, polishable limestone – a sedimentary carbonate rock deposited in a warm tropical shelf sea and compacted into a dense crystalline rock by diagenesis. The deposits lie in the Turkish provinces of Bursa, Afyon and Burdur. In the international stone trade the grade is listed as "Turkish marble" – that is a commercial classification, not a geological marble designation. SC entry: s498.

What does the designation "Turco" refer to?

The suffix "Turco" unambiguously marks the Turkish provenance and distinguishes the grade from the more commonly traded Spanish Emperador Light (Yecla, Murcia, Alicante). The trade name "Emperador" points to the classic romantic-imperial character of the warm brown marble family.

What exactly does Emperador Light Turco look like?

A warm mid- to dark-brown stone beige through to cognac brown as the ground tone, crossed by a characteristic dense white calcite vein network in an irregular, branched, tree-like distribution. Occasional breccia-like clast zones and light grey to cream lightenings give additional variation in depth.

What technical values does Emperador Light Turco have?

SC values (s498): bulk density 2,710 kg/m³, compressive strength 113 MPa, flexural strength 14.9 MPa, water absorption 0.2 %, Mohs hardness approximately 3 – 4 (calcite). This places the stone in the more stable range of polishable limestones. Acid-sensitive (calcitic). Frost resistance not officially documented.

Is Emperador Light Turco suitable for kitchen worktops?

Only with reservations. Wine, vinegar, lemon, tomato juice and cola leave immediately visible etch marks on the material surface. Anyone wanting the warm brown look in the kitchen should choose a more matt surface finish with a premium sealer. For an acid-proof warm brown kitchen worktop we recommend switching to a warm-toned quartzite or a porcelain with an Emperador look.

Which cleaners may I use?

Permitted are warm water, all pH-neutral stone and all-purpose cleaners and mild washing-up foam. Taboo are all acidic cleaners – descalers, anti-limescale sprays with an acid content, WC cleaners, wheel cleaners, oven sprays. Even diluted vinegar or lemon juice leaves dull etch marks immediately, which can only be remedied by professional re-polishing.

Emperador Light Turco or Emperador Light Spagna?

Both are polishable limestones with an identical care profile. Emperador Light Turco (Turkey, Bursa/Afyon/Burdur) shows a somewhat lighter and warmer tonality with more delicate veining – the newer variant on the international market. Emperador Light Spagna (Spain, Yecla/Murcia) is the historically classic and most widely traded variant, somewhat darker and higher in contrast with denser veining. The choice is a matter of style between the lighter Turkish variant and the classic Spanish one.

Emperador Light Turco or Marrón Emperador?

Both are polishable limestones with a similar care requirement. Emperador Light Turco appears lighter, more open and less heavy with more delicate white veining; Marrón Emperador (Marrón Imperial) is markedly higher in contrast and more striking, with dark brown depth and dramatic white veining. For light, Mediterranean and orientally inspired rooms, Emperador Light Turco is the better choice; for dramatic statement applications, Marrón Emperador.
