Galilee Gold (Galilee Golden Vein) is a warm golden-yellow to honey-cream bioclastic limestone from Karmiel in western Galilee, northern Israel — a Mesozoic sedimentary rock with recognisable fossil inclusions, deeply rooted in the biblical and Levantine building tradition. A Mediterranean-warm stage for façades, wall cladding, interior floors and prestige exterior architecture.

About Galilee Gold

Galilee Gold (official trade name: Galilee Golden Vein) is a fossil-rich limestone from the Karmiel (Carmiel) quarry area in western Galilee, northern Israel. The Galilee region is one of the oldest quarrying and building-tradition areas in the world — from Phoenician-Canaanite times through Roman-Byzantine architecture to today's Israeli quarries, pale to golden carbonate rocks have been won here for sacred buildings, residential architecture and city walls. The stone therefore stands in a geographical and historical line with the classic Levantine dimension stones such as Jerusalem Stone, Hebron Stone and the various Israeli Galilee grades.

Geschliffen C220

Mattes Erscheinungsbild durch feinen Schliff mit Körnung C220 — die ebene Oberfläche wirkt ruhig mit etwas intensiverer Farbwirkung als C120, leichte Schleifspuren möglich. Pflegeintensiver als poliert, dafür kratzfester und matt-elegant — beliebte Wahl für moderne Bodenflächen und Wandverkleidungen.

Care & fabrication

Galilee Gold is a carbonate limestone and reacts sensitively to acid. Because of the higher water absorption of 1.5 %, consistent sealing on installation and at regular care intervals is particularly important.

Daily cleaning: a soft microfibre cloth, warm water and a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner. Then wipe over with clear water and polish dry. Otherwise limescale residues develop on the C220 surface as a veil over the warm golden tonality.

Do not use: lemon, vinegar or all-purpose cleaners with an acid additive, descalers, acid-based cement-veil removers, abrasives, steel wool or micro-scratching sponges. On the C220 surface these leave dull etch marks or local dulling which, depending on depth, can only be removed by re-honing.

Sealing: directly after installation and, depending on use, every 12–18 months with a high-quality natural stone sealer on a solvent or silicone base. Given the higher water absorption of Galilee Gold this precaution is particularly relevant, because unprotected stone can otherwise take up oil, wine or food stains.

Kitchen worktop: only sensible with an awareness of the care effort. Wipe acidic splashes (lemon, wine, tomato sauce, vinegar) away at once, do not let them dry on. Always set hot pans and pots on trivets — direct heat input of 200 °C plus can produce thermally induced stress cracks. Cut exclusively on a separate chopping board.

Bathroom and vanity top: remove calcareous water splashes regularly with a soft cloth. On no account remove limescale rings at the tap with a descaler or vinegar cleaner — these etch the limestone immediately. Instead work with warm water, a microfibre cloth and, if necessary, a special natural stone bathroom cleaner.

Floor: soft felt glides under furniture, regular vacuuming rather than sweeping with dirt particles present, mopping with a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Use dirt-trapping mats in entrance areas, because tracked-in quartz sand can abrade the C220 surface over time.

Outdoors: façades, wall cladding and wall elements are readily achievable with good sealing and proper constructive detailing. For heavily used external floor surfaces with freeze-thaw cycles and acid rain loading the stone is not the first choice — here granite, porcelain or harder quartzites are the more robust solution. Always use road salt sparingly in winter and rinse thoroughly in spring.

Repair: scratches and etch marks in the C220 finish can be evened out by professional re-honing. Larger damage is repaired with colour-matched stone fillers and then matched to the original surface.

Frequently asked questions

Is Galilee Gold a marble or a limestone?

Petrographically correctly a bioclastic limestone (a Mesozoic sedimentary rock with a fossil content, DNSA entry 0372). In the international stone trade the material is in part listed as “marble” — a designation widespread in the Mediterranean market but petrographically imprecise. This has no bearing on its suitability as a dimension stone; only petrographic honesty demands the classification as limestone.

Where exactly does Galilee Gold come from?

From the Karmiel (Carmiel) quarry area in western Galilee, northern Israel. Geologically the deposit belongs to the Mesozoic carbonate sequences of the northern Israeli shelf platform, regionally related to the Hebron, Jerusalem and Egyptian Galala limestones. Since biblical and Phoenician-Canaanite times, Galilee has been one of the oldest stone-tradition regions in the world.

What technical properties does Galilee Gold have?

Bulk density 2,530–2,600 kg/m³, compressive strength 66–76 MPa, flexural strength 7.5–12.2 MPa, water absorption 1.5 %, Mohs hardness approx. 3 (carbonate chemistry). This places the stone in the medium strength range of Mediterranean dimension limestones — solid for interior applications and good façades, less suitable for intensive high loading or uncompromisingly acid-resistant applications.

Is Galilee Gold suitable for a kitchen worktop?

Only with an awareness of the care effort. As a carbonate limestone, Galilee Gold is acid-sensitive and, at 1.5 % water absorption, distinctly more open-pored than dense granites or porcelain slabs. Feasible with professional sealing and consistent care; for intensively used kitchen worktops we recommend granite, quartzite or porcelain. For prestige vanity tops or bathroom surfaces under normal use, Galilee Gold is readily usable.

What does the surface designation “C220” mean?

C220 is a finely honed treatment with a 220 grit, that is, a matt, softly silky surface between classic honed and satin-honed. This treatment suits warm bioclastic limestones such as Galilee Gold particularly well, because it brings out the golden nuance and the fine fossil structures naturally — without a high gloss that would overlay the depth and the authentic character.

Galilee Gold or Jerusalem Stone Gold — what is the difference?

Both come from the larger Levantine carbonate platform of Israel and are stylistically closely related. Jerusalem Stone Gold often tends somewhat paler and more even, with somewhat less visible fossil structures. Galilee Gold more frequently shows a stronger golden nuance with more clearly recognisable bioclast traces and a warmer tonality. Which material fits better depends on the desired tonal value and the desired liveliness of structure.

Is Galilee Gold frost-resistant and suitable for outdoor use?

Yes, with good sealing and proper constructive execution with drainage and fall. Because of the higher water absorption of 1.5 %, frost capability is not unlimited — for heavily frost-loaded external floor surfaces we recommend granite, porcelain or harder quartzites. For façades, wall cladding and covered external areas, Galilee Gold is well suited.

How much material do you currently have in stock?

We currently carry 23 raw slabs of Galilee Gold in 20 mm and 30 mm thickness with a C220 finish. For larger projects and colour-homogeneous large areas we recommend prompt reservation in our warehouse — Israeli Galilee limestones are not often found in the German market, and resupply from the Karmiel quarries cannot be planned at short notice.
