Giallo da Bahia

Giallo da Bahia is an expressive Brazilian gneiss of the granite trade family from the state of Bahia, with a warm golden-yellow, honey-coloured ground mass, a directional migmatic foliation and characteristic black biotite stripes as well as subtle dark brown vein bands. Also listed internationally as Amarelo Bahia, Giallo Bahia and Bahia Yellow Granite; used for external façades, statement wall cladding, floor surfaces, stairs, bar counters, kitchen worktops and prestige building applications with a warm Mediterranean feel.

About Giallo da Bahia

Giallo da Bahia shows an exceptionally warm, directional gneiss character with a lively banded structure. The ground mass consists predominantly of warm golden-yellow to honey-creamy areas with subtle transitions to beige and occasionally dark brown tones — the characteristic warm Bahia tone, produced by mineralisations with iron oxides and limonitic admixtures during metamorphism. Across the slab surface run characteristic directionally aligned black biotite stripes and dark mineral areas, which produce the typical gneissic foliation. The banded structure is not strictly linear but slightly wavy and irregular — like frozen currents with a warm golden tone. Here and there, subtle dark brown vein bands and cloud structures add further accents of depth. On a polished surface the stone develops a rich, warm depth effect — the golden tones intensify, the black biotite stripes stand out plastically and the directional movement becomes the dynamic main element of the slab look. The overall effect of the material is warm, lively and inviting — the stone reads like frozen Mediterranean sunlight or like a gentle golden current in stone.

Geologically, Giallo da Bahia is a Precambrian gneiss from the Brazilian state of Bahia, one of the most important hard stone provinces in South America. Petrographically a directionally foliated gneiss with quartz, feldspar and mica mineralisations. Several synonyms circulate in international trade: Amarelo Bahia (the original Portuguese name — 'Bahia yellow'), Giallo Bahia (the Italian spelling variant), Bahia Yellow Granite (the English trade name) and occasionally Golden Bahia or DL Bala Golden Bahia. In the trade the stone is traditionally listed as 'granite', which is a trade convention customary in Brazil for directional gneisses and hard stone migmatites — petrographically correct would be 'gneiss'. Technically, Giallo da Bahia shows the typical values of a Brazilian hard stone gneiss: bulk density estimated at 2,650 kg/m³ (for demanding applications, requesting a project-specific data sheet is advisable), Mohs hardness around 6–7. Full acid resistance as a silicate rock is confirmed — wine, lemon juice, vinegar or sanitary cleaners leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone. Frost resistance is good, as is typical for Brazilian gneisses, and the coefficient of friction (0.6–0.8) is in the typical range for granite floor surfaces. For large-area external applications we recommend requesting a project-specific data sheet from the importer.

Compared with other warm Brazilian hard stones, Giallo da Bahia is a balanced choice: Juparana Colombo (with a similar directional banded structure but stronger red-pink accents) is more powerful in colour; Madura Gold (an Indian banded gneiss with a similarly warm tone) is similar in character but comes from India; Giallo Veneziano (a classic Brazilian gneiss with a similar Bahia composition but a lighter ground tone) is more yellowish and more uniform; Yellow River (a South American hard stone) shows more flowing banded structures. Within the yellow Brazilian gneiss family, Giallo da Bahia is the typical directional variant with a warm Bahia tone. Finishes

Giallo da Bahia is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish in the hard stone segment — a mirror-smooth, high-gloss surface with the highest possible colour intensity and maximum depth effect in the mineral structure. As an acid-resistant silicate stone, polished granite is easy to care for and the first choice for kitchen worktops, wall claddings and prestigious exposed surfaces.

Care & fabrication

As a Brazilian gneiss, Giallo da Bahia is a robust hard stone with full acid resistance and solid mechanical strength. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone — the stone is considerably easier to care for and well suited to intensive everyday use.

For interior applications we recommend sealing on a silane or polysiloxane base at first installation. On polished surfaces a refresh every 5–8 years is enough; on heavily used kitchen worktops or external applications, check every 2–3 years. Sealing protects against deep penetration of oil, grease and pigments — on the heterogeneous banded structure, discolouration would otherwise show up particularly on the lighter golden areas.

Daily care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually enough. Acidic cleaners are fundamentally unproblematic, but should nevertheless not be used, because they can attack the sealer. For kitchen worktops, Giallo da Bahia is well suited: cut- and scratch-resistant, insensitive to heat (hot pots and pans can be set down directly for short periods, but prolonged heat exposure above 200 °C should still be avoided), acid-resistant and with good stain repellency. The warm golden-yellow banded structure conceals small marks of use astonishingly well. With the yellow ground tone you should react promptly to strongly pigmented spills (red wine, tomato sauce, turmeric) — the warm tone can show pigments somewhat more strongly than very dark granites.

For external applications, Giallo da Bahia is well suited given correct sealing — the properties typical of Brazilian gneisses qualify the stone for external façades, paving and pool areas. For pool surrounds, external terraces and fountain surrounds, a slip-resistant textured surface is mandatory for slip resistance. For large-area external façades we recommend requesting a project-specific data sheet from the importer regarding frost resistance.
