Labrador Antic

Labrador Antic is a Norwegian anorthosite from Egersund (Rogaland) with a dark grey-brown base matrix and the characteristic labradorescent play of colour: blue-violet and partly golden light reflections from the labradorite feldspar crystals. Listed in the trade as a granite — one of the most dramatic natural materials for prestige wall claddings, floor areas, façades, kitchen worktops and designed architectural applications.

About Labrador Antic

Labrador Antic is one of the most expressive natural materials in the Norwegian stone range — a Precambrian anorthosite from Egersund in the south-west Norwegian province of Rogaland, valued for its unmistakable labradorescent light effect. Characteristic is a dark grey-brown to almost black, coarse-grained base matrix, interspersed with individual labradorite feldspar crystals that light up in intense blue, violet, green or gold depending on how the light falls. This so-called labradorescence arises from thin mineral layers within the feldspar crystals at which light interferes at specific wavelengths — a purely optical phenomenon that is typical of anorthosites from Norway and Labrador (Canada) and that gave the material its name. On the international market the material also runs under the trade names Labrador Antik, Labrador Antique, Falcon Eye and Blue Antique. Poliert

Politur ist die klassischste Veredelung im Hartgesteinsegment — eine spiegelglatte, hochglänzende Oberfläche mit höchstmöglicher Farbintensität und maximaler Tiefenwirkung der Mineralstruktur. Als säurebeständiges Silikatgestein ist polierter Granit pflegeleicht und für Küchenarbeitsplatten, Wandverkleidungen und repräsentative Sichtflächen erste Wahl.

Care & fabrication

As a Norwegian anorthosite, Labrador Antic can be maintained over the long term and cleaned without difficulty. For kitchen worktops, external paving and heavily used floor areas we recommend a silane- or polysiloxane-based sealer as protection against red wine, coffee, oil and tomato sauce. Routine cleaning is done with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft microfibre cloth or mop. Important: because of the partial acid sensitivity of the plagioclase minerals, acidic cleaners (vinegar, citric acid, descalers) and strongly alkaline all-purpose cleaners should be avoided — over time they can dissolve individual mineral components and dull the polish. Food acids (wine, lemon juice, vinegar) are unproblematic within the normal application range, but should not be left to act over a longer period. The surface finishes available in stock are listed in the »Finishes« block further down. We recommend refreshing the sealer every three to five years depending on exposure.

What is the labradorescence of Labrador Antic?

Labradorescence is an optical phenomenon in which light is reflected within the labradorite feldspar crystals at thin mineral layers and interferes at specific wavelengths. The result is the characteristic blue, violet, green and occasionally golden light reflections that light up on the surface depending on the incidence of light and the viewing angle. These light effects are only fully visible on polished surfaces and make Labrador Antic one of the most dramatic natural materials there is.

What other designations does the material carry?

On the market the material runs under several trade names: Labrador Antic (the main German designation), Labrador Antik, Labrador Antique, Falcon Eye and Blue Antique. All designations refer to the same Norwegian anorthosite from Egersund (DNSA 5338, INSK 30.12). Important: other Norwegian “Labrador” stones — Labrador Hell, Labrador Dunkel, Labrador Acier — come from the Larvik complex and are a different material (syenites with a finer texture).

What is the difference from Labrador Hell and Blue Pearl?

Labrador Hell, Labrador Dunkel and Blue Pearl come from the Larvik complex and are syenites — finer-grained, with an even silvery grey base colour and more restrained iridescence. Labrador Antic from Egersund is an anorthosite — coarser-grained, with a darker base matrix and more dramatic, more concentrated iridescent crystals. Anyone looking for a calmer, more refined appearance is better served by the Larvik varieties; for maximum material drama with striking light reflections, Labrador Antic is the stronger choice.

What technical values does Labrador Antic have?

From the DNSA entry (5338): bulk density 2,690 kg/m³, compressive strength 220 MPa (one of the highest in the entire Labrador family), flexural strength 17.3 MPa, water absorption 0.07–0.12 per cent, porosity 0.18–0.33 per cent. Frost resistance DNSA-confirmed. Acid resistance is partial — individual plagioclase components are not permanently acid-resistant.

Is Labrador Antic suitable for kitchen worktops?

Yes, with reservations. The high compressive strength (220 MPa) and low water absorption (0.07–0.12 per cent) make the material technically very robust. Because of the partial acid sensitivity, wine, lemon juice or vinegar should not be left to act over a longer period — take up spilled acids promptly and avoid acidic cleaners. With a good sealer, Labrador Antic is a very expressive choice for statement cooking islands and bar counters; for main worktops with heavy acid exposure, acid-proof hard granites or quartzites are the safer choice.
