Black Lapponia

Lapponia Black (also “Black Lapponia” or “Ice Black”) is a Finnish pyroxenite from the Keminmaa/Kemijärvi district in Finnish Lapland, near the Arctic Circle – petrographically a Precambrian ultramafic plutonic rock and therefore one of the densest and heaviest natural materials in the stone trade (bulk density 3,260 kg/m³). The slab shows a deep black-anthracite-greenish ground tone with subtle movement from white-cream plagioclase veins and fine olivine-green undertones. Petrographisch ein Pyroxenit – ein präkambrisches ultramafisches Tiefen­gestein aus der Familie der ultrabasischen Plutonite. Mineralbestand: 66,1 % Augit, 13,2 % Olivin, 12,1 % Plagioklas, 5,2 % Amphibol, 2,4 % Biotit, 1 % Erzminerale. Die Lagerstätte liegt im Steinbruch­gebiet Keminmaa/Kemijärvi in der finnischen Provinz Lappi (FINNLAND, NICHT Norwegen wie teilweise im Handel angegeben), nahe dem nördlichen Polarkreis. Im internationalen Stein­handel wird die Sortierung gelegentlich der Granit- oder Quarzit-Familie zugeordnet – das ist eine kommerzielle Klassifikation, petrographisch korrekt ist die Bezeichnung als Pyroxenit. Die außergewöhnlich hohe Rohdichte von 3.260 kg/m³ (etwa 20 % höher als bei klassischen Graniten) ist ein zuverlässiges Identifikations­merkmal. Bedingt säure­beständig: die ultramafischen Mineralanteile (Olivin, Augit) sind nicht dauerhaft säure­beständig, daher im Innen­bereich konditional einsetzbar, im Außen­bereich mit Hochglanz-Oberfläche nur begrenzt langzeitstabil.

About Black Lapponia

Background. Lapponia Black is one of the rarest and petrographically most exceptional natural stone grades in the European stone trade – a Precambrian pyroxenite from the Keminmaa/Kemijärvi district in Finnish Lapland (Lappi), near the northern Arctic Circle. The grade is also traded as “Black Lapponia” or “Ice Black” and is documented in the DNSA (German Natural Stone Archive) as entry #2854. In international stone trading the stone is occasionally assigned to the granite or quartzite family – petrographically correct is the designation as pyroxenite (an ultramafic plutonic rock), a rock family extremely rarely used in stone architecture.

Black Lapponia is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Poliert

Politur ist die klassischste Veredelung für Quarzit — eine glänzende Oberfläche mit höchstmöglicher Farbintensität und ausgeprägter Tiefenwirkung. Je nach mineralischer Zusammensetzung kann die Wirkung stellenweise mattglänzend sein. Als Silikatgestein vollständig säurebeständig und kratzhart — ideal für Küchenarbeitsplatten und Sichtflächen.

Care & fabrication

Cleaning. In everyday use, warm water, a soft cloth or a clean mop and a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner are sufficient. Mild all-purpose cleaners, mild washing-up foam and all commercially available sanitary and kitchen cleaners without strongly concentrated acids are suitable. Take up spills promptly.

Do not use. Strongly acidic specialist cleaners (HF-containing wheel cleaners, industrial glass cleaners, acid descalers in high concentration) – the ultramafic mineral fractions (olivine, augite) are not permanently acid-resistant and can be attacked locally under prolonged acid exposure. Aggressive scouring pads or abrasive pastes are likewise out of the question.

Sealing. Recommended for kitchen worktops and external applications. Lapponia Black has a water absorption of 0.08 % and is dense in itself. A premium sealer with a silane/siloxane-based stone protector makes it easier to deal with grease, oil, wine and coffee on kitchen and bathroom surfaces.

Kitchen and bathroom. Robust in kitchen and bathroom use: hot pots can be set down directly on the untreated slab for a short time. At Mohs 6–7 the grade is very scratch-resistant. Note: under prolonged acid exposure (wine, vinegar, lemon, tomato over several hours) the ultramafic mineral fractions can be attacked locally – we recommend wiping acidic substances away promptly and sealing consistently. Anti-limescale sprays and all commercially available sanitary cleaners are approved.

Floor and stairs. Outstandingly suited as an interior and external floor. The surface finishes currently in stock are listed in the »Finishes« block further down. The extremely high bulk density (3,260 kg/m³) must be taken into account in the structural design and installation – Lapponia Black is markedly heavier than other natural stone slabs.

Outdoors and frost. Fully suitable (confirmed by DNSA). The stone is frost- and de-icing-salt-resistant, UV-stable and can be used as a back-ventilated façade panel, external wall cladding, pool surround, external floor covering and terrace slab. The surface finishes currently in stock are listed in the »Finishes« block further down.

Scratches and repair. At Mohs 6–7, pyroxenite is very scratch-resistant. Deeper damage or dull patches can be locally reworked on polished slabs by re-polishing with diamond pastes – this work belongs in the hands of a specialist stonemason or joint-technology firm.

What technical values does Lapponia Black have?

DNSA values (#2854): bulk density 3,260 kg/m³ (exceptionally high – about 20 % heavier than a classic granite), compressive strength 133 MPa, flexural strength 16.4 MPa, water absorption 0.08 %, Mohs hardness about 6–7. Frost-resistant (confirmed by DNSA). Conditional acid sensitivity: the ultramafic mineral fractions (olivine, augite) are not permanently acid-resistant.

What exactly does Lapponia Black look like?

A deep black-anthracite-greenish dimension stone black with subtle warm greenish undertones from the olivine-rich fractions. Across the surface run characteristic dramatic, fluid vein networks of white-cream, plagioclase-rich paths that run across the slab like a migmatitic image of movement – the compositional identifying feature of this grade.

Is Lapponia Black suitable for the kitchen?

Yes, very much so. At Mohs 6–7 the grade is very scratch-resistant and robust in everyday use. Under prolonged acid exposure (wine, vinegar, lemon over several hours) the ultramafic mineral fractions (olivine, augite) can be attacked locally – we recommend wiping acidic substances away promptly and sealing consistently.

Is Lapponia Black suitable for external surfaces?

Yes, completely (confirmed by DNSA). The stone is frost- and de-icing-salt-resistant, UV-stable and can be used as a back-ventilated façade panel, pool surround, external floor covering and terrace slab. Note: polished pyroxenite slabs are only conditionally stable over the long term outdoors – for permanent external use we recommend a matt, textured surface finish.

Why is Lapponia Black so heavy?

With a bulk density of 3,260 kg/m³, Lapponia Black is about 20 % heavier than a classic granite (2,640–2,700 kg/m³). This exceptionally high density is characteristic of ultramafic plutonic rocks such as pyroxenite, which contain a very high proportion of heavy iron- and magnesium-bearing minerals (pyroxene, olivine, magnetite, ilmenite). This high density must be taken into account in the structural design and installation.

Lapponia Black or Nero Assoluto Zimbabwe?

Both are dark premium hard stones, but petrographically different: Lapponia Black (pyroxenite, ultramafic, 3,260 kg/m³) shows a characteristic fluid plagioclase veining; Nero Assoluto Zimbabwe (gabbro, basic, approx. 3,000 kg/m³) is almost structureless black with a fine granular grain image. The choice is a matter of style between a dramatically animated ultramafic feel with plagioclase veins (Lapponia Black) and a calm, planar premium black (Nero Assoluto Zimbabwe).
