Marcenia is a Spanish limestone from the Iberian limestone province — for centuries Spain has been among the most important European exporters of dimension stone, with extensive limestone and marble deposits in the Levante (Alicante, Murcia), in Aragón and in Extremadura.
Geologically it is a Mesozoic to Tertiary platform limestone, deposited in the shallow warm shelf seas of the Tethys sedimentation. The warm sand-coloured tonality arises through fine pigmentation with iron oxide and organic constituents during diagenesis.
In the slab appearance, Marcenia shows a warm creamy sand-coloured to honey-cream base tone with restrained organic natural stone grain and fine carbonate accents. In places, subtle mineralisation spots or fine bedding lines can be made out, which give the surface a calm, elegant depth. The look is restrained in design terms and atmospherically warm — a classic Mediterranean dimension-stone character.

Technically, Marcenia is, like all carbonate limestones, acid-sensitive (Mohs hardness approx. 3) and requires a corresponding awareness in care. The Mediterranean building tradition shows, however, that such limestones last for centuries given proper laying and care — a large part of historic Iberian architecture is executed in Spanish limestones.

The 30 mm and 40 mm thicknesses are particularly suited to stair treads under heavy loading and to cantilevered external elements. Marcenia is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.
Flamed + brushed once
The surface is roughened by heat and brushed once to smooth sharp-edged mineral residues and remove loose material. The feel is somewhat gentler than purely flamed, it remains slip-resistant, and the colour is less intense than polished. Recommended for outdoor areas and for heavily used floor areas that need secure footing.
Care & fabrication
Marcenia is a carbonate limestone and reacts sensitively to acid. Mohs hardness approx. 3.
Daily cleaning: a soft cloth or soft mop, clear water and a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner.
Do not use: acidic cleaners, descalers, scouring agents.
Sealing: recommended directly after installation and, depending on use, every 12–18 months.
The finishes available from stock are listed in the »Finishes« block further down. Given proper laying with drainage, it is suitable for frost conditions. Use de-icing salt sparingly in winter — de-icing salt is harmful on carbonate stones and should be rinsed off thoroughly in spring.
Façade: with a rear-fixed construction, sealing and structural protection, it is excellently suited to external use.
Repair: scratches and matt patches can be evened out by professional resanding.
