Miros Typ Myrddin®

Miros Typ Myrddin® is a graded variant of the well-known Turkish Miros limestone from the Antalya-Burdur region — a light cream to ivory-coloured sedimentary limestone with a very fine, evenly powdery texture and subtle fossil inclusions. Internationally also listed as Miros Limestone, Miros Fossil Limestone and Miros Beige Limestone; used for calm light internal wall claddings, bathrooms, spa areas, floor surfaces, vanity top coverings and prestige internal surfaces with a restrained, classically elegant feel.

Petrographically, Miros Typ Myrddin® is a limestone from the Turkish Antalya-Burdur region — not a marble in the strict petrographic sense, even though in the trade it is sometimes listed as “marble”. Geologically a fine-grained sedimentary calcite limestone with subtle fossil inclusions; in the DIN/EN sense to be classified as a limestone. The ® symbol identifies the brand name “Typ Myrddin” as a protected designation for a graded selection, held by the German importer.

About Miros Typ Myrddin®

Miros Typ Myrddin® shows an exceptionally calm and timelessly elegant slab character. The groundmass is a very light cream to ivory-coloured sedimentary limestone matrix with an almost uniformly powdery, fine-grained texture. The feel is reminiscent of a fine polished limestone or a light sandstone with plant fibres. On close inspection, subtle fossil inclusions are recognisable — tiny remains of foraminifera and calcareous algae from sediment formation in a warm Cretaceous shelf sea. Here and there, delicate light beige to honey-coloured shadings appear, lending subtle depth to the otherwise evenly light surface without making it restless. The overall material effect is calm, soft and restrained — the stone reads as a light, friendly background material that brings other design elements (furniture, lighting, plants) into their own without itself becoming the dominant statement. Geologically, Miros Typ Myrddin® is a sedimentary limestone from the southern Turkish Antalya-Burdur region — one of the most significant limestone provinces worldwide, which since the 1980s has supplied numerous premium limestone selections to the European and North American markets. Together with Myra Limestone, Antalya Limestone, Limra White, Cafe Cream and Likya Royal, the Miros limestone belongs to the extended family of Turkish light beige sedimentary limestones. The brand designation “Typ Myrddin” (the suffixed R symbol denotes a protected trade mark registration by the German importer) refers to a graded variant of the standard Miros limestone with a particularly even light groundmass and reduced mottling. In international trade the designations Miros Limestone, Miros Fossil Limestone and Miros Beige Limestone also circulate. The typical technical properties of Turkish beige sedimentary limestones such as Miros are a moderate bulk density of around 2,500–2,600 kg/m³, medium water absorption of around 0.4–0.8 %, compressive strength between 80–120 MPa, flexural strength of around 8–14 MPa and a Mohs hardness of 3–4 (markedly lower than granite or quartzite). Important: as a calcite limestone, Miros is acid-sensitive — wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave etch marks and matt patches on untreated limestone surfaces immediately. We recommend requesting detailed technical data sheets for the Typ Myrddin selection on a project basis before large-area external or heavily loaded applications. For purely internal applications the typical values are entirely sufficient.

Compared with classic Mediterranean limestones such as Crema Marfil (Spanish, somewhat warmer and with more pronounced vein traces), Jura Beige (German, with stronger fossils), Pierre de Bourgogne (French, with a golden cast) or Limra Beige (Turkish, somewhat darker), Miros Typ Myrddin® brings the calmest, most even and most neutral feel — ideal for modern interior architecture with a reduced material weight. Compared with Italian travertines such as Travertino Romano Classico, Miros shows a markedly calmer, more closed slab appearance without pronounced travertine pores. For architectural projects with a minimalist, restrained material aesthetic — modern bathrooms with light walls and floor surfaces, spa areas with a wabi-sabi feel, hotel lobbies with a calm background effect, prestige internal surfaces for light-flooded architecture — Miros Typ Myrddin® is a very fitting choice within the light sedimentary limestone range. Important for planning: as a limestone, Miros is deliberately softer and more maintenance-intensive than granite or quartzite — the material choice should be made with a clear understanding of this characteristic.

Finishes

Miros Typ Myrddin® is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Satin-honed

The surface is brushed — softer minerals are selectively removed, creating a subtle depth and a matte appearance. Strongly veined limestones in particular gain a characterful look and feel this way. The more matte finish conceals small etch marks better than a polish and stands up better to everyday use on heavily used interior surfaces.

Honed C220

A matt appearance created by fine honing with C220 grit — the level surface looks calm, with a somewhat more intense colour effect than C120; light honing marks are possible. More maintenance-intensive than polished, but more scratch-resistant and matt-elegant — a popular choice for modern floors and wall claddings.

Care & fabrication

As a Turkish sedimentary limestone, Miros Typ Myrddin® is acid-sensitive and markedly more maintenance-intensive than granite or quartzite. With a Mohs hardness of 3–4, medium water absorption and pronounced acid reactivity, the stone calls for deliberate care and consistent sealing. These notes should be consciously taken into account in the material choice — limestone is a deliberately chosen design material, not a maintenance-free all-rounder.

For internal applications we recommend careful sealing on a silane or polysiloxane basis at first installation, applied in two coats for sufficient penetration depth. Sealing protects against deep penetration of oil, grease, pigments and water stains — otherwise discolouration can settle visibly on the light creamy ivory groundmass.

Daily care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually sufficient. Acidic cleaners (vinegar, citric acid, sanitary cleaners, descalers) are STRICTLY to be avoided — they attack the limestone immediately and leave matt etch marks that can only be removed by professional regrinding. Cola, wine, tomato sauce and citrus fruits can likewise leave etch marks on untreated surfaces — take up spillages immediately. Particularly important in bathrooms: remove water and soap residues regularly, because soap residues left to act for longer can permanently reduce the gloss.

For kitchen worktops, Miros Typ Myrddin® is only conditionally suitable — it is not fully acid-resistant and not fully resistant to cutting and scratching (Mohs hardness 3–4 vs. 7+ for granite/quartzite). Heat resistance is given, but hot pots should not be set down directly (use trivets). For intensively used professional kitchens we recommend alternative hard stones. For a warm, characterful designer kitchen with a deliberate material effect, however, Miros can be very effective with good care — particularly for modern minimalist concepts or wabi-sabi stagings with a conscious acceptance of patina.

For bathrooms and wellness areas, Miros Typ Myrddin® is a very fitting choice — the calm light material effect brings the typical spa atmosphere. Important here: where there is direct water loading (shower walls, bath surrounds, vanity tops), particularly careful sealing is obligatory, and acidic sanitary cleaners are strictly to be avoided. For external applications we recommend Miros Typ Myrddin® only with restrictions. Turkish light sedimentary limestones sometimes show discolouration or fine surface splitting under freeze-thaw cycles and intensive UV exposure. Before external applications, in particular large-area façades or pool areas, we recommend a project-related check of the data sheet for frost resistance with the importer. For interior-oriented applications, light, calm material effects such as those of Miros Typ Myrddin® are the ideal domain of use.

How do I clean and care for Miros Typ Myrddin®?

Miros Typ Myrddin® calls for deliberate limestone care: first installation with a two-coat silane or polysiloxane sealer, daily care with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a microfibre cloth. Acidic cleaners (vinegar, citric acid, sanitary cleaners, descalers) are STRICTLY to be avoided — they cause immediate etch marks. Miros Typ Myrddin® or Crema Marfil?

Both are light sedimentary limestones with similar care requirements. Crema Marfil (Spanish, from Pinoso/Alicante) is somewhat warmer in tone and shows more pronounced honey-coloured vein traces — the classic Mediterranean limestone character. Miros Typ Myrddin® is calmer, more even and more neutral — the restrained modern variant without pronounced vein figure. For a classic Mediterranean feel, Crema Marfil is the choice; for modern minimalist architecture, Miros Typ Myrddin® is the more coherent one.
