As a limestone, Muschelkalk Blaubank is acid-sensitive, but thanks to its low water absorption of 0.3 % and compressive strength of 113 MPa it is technically an exceptionally robust representative of its material class, with centuries of proven maintenance experience in the German building tradition. Indoors, use exclusively warm water with a pH-neutral stone cleaning agent for daily cleaning — acidic household cleaners, vinegar, citric acid descalers or other acidic substances cause dull etched patches that can only be reversed by professional re-polishing. Take up spilled acidic liquids promptly with clear water. Professional sealing after installation and every 2 to 3 years thereafter is recommended indoors and obligatory outdoors — it reduces water absorption further, protects against freeze-thaw damage and moderates the take-up of pigments (red wine, coffee, olive oil). Outdoors, avoiding de-icing salt in winter is important — chloride-free de-icing agents are the gentler alternative. Where precipitation is acidic in urban locations, a light patina can form over long periods, which in many historic buildings is accepted as a welcome effect of ageing.
