Nordic Sunset comes from the high-grade metamorphic plutonic complexes of the Russian Karelian shield or the adjoining Kola peninsula — geologically these north Russian deposits belong to the oldest and most stable crustal segments of Eurasia. The Karelia-Kola region (Russia and Finland span the same shield structure, known in Finland as Fennoscandia) is Precambrian basement several billion years old — a region famous for its dark, heavy mafic and ultramafic rocks, which also produces many other commercial black stones such as Lapponia Black, Aurora Finnland and Nero Assoluto Schweden.
Petrographically, Nordic Sunset is NOT a classic acidic granite but a MIGMATITE — a “mixed rock” from high-grade metamorphism, in which the parent rock was partially melted under extreme pressure and temperature loading. Two clearly distinguishable components can be made out in the slab pattern. First, the dark, mafic-dominated ground mass (melanosome) — the unmelted, residual fraction with a high proportion of pyroxenes, hornblendes, biotite and sometimes olivine, which is responsible for the deep anthracite-black colouring and the high bulk density. Second, the pale, dramatically distributed white to cream-coloured patches and streaks (leucosome) — crystallised remnants of the partial melt with a predominantly feldspar-quartzitic composition. The reddish, warm-toned areas come from potassium-rich feldspars that develop an orange-brown pigmentation through iron substitutions.
The slab pattern that results is highly expressive: a dramatically dark, almost night-sky-like ground tone across which the pale leucosome patches are distributed like splashed creamy paint or melting snowflakes. The distribution is not regular or directional but reads as almost organically random — every slab is a unique image of the original partial-melt geometry. The reddish, warm K-feldspar flecks set punctual accents and give the stone a particular, slightly warm character — hence the brand name “Nordic Sunset”, which frames the combination of a dark black and warm reddish accents as a sunset metaphor.
The high bulk density of 3,180 kg/m³ is considerably higher than that of a classic granite (typically 2,650–2,750 kg/m³) and confirms the high mafic mineral content — in its density profile the rock lies between gabbro and basic to ultramafic plutonic rocks. The compressive strength of 216 MPa and the low water absorption of 0.22 % qualify Nordic Sunset as one of the most robust dark dimension stones on the market — acid-resistant, frost-resistant (F150 classification, that is, over 150 freeze-thaw cycles without loss of strength), abrasion-resistant and thermally stable.
In international trade Nordic Sunset is often carried summarily as “black granite” — a commercially widespread but petrographically inaccurate designation. In the strict sense “granite” is an acidic plutonic rock (an SiO₂-rich quartz-feldspar-mica assemblage); migmatites, by contrast, are high-grade metamorphic mixed rocks. For the application this distinction is nevertheless secondary: Nordic Sunset offers all the properties of a high-performance hard rock — with a markedly more expressive appearance than an even black granite such as Nero Assoluto.
For the application this means: Nordic Sunset is a first choice for robust kitchen worktops with a dramatic dark accent, stairs under high loading, façade elements with exterior exposure, prestigious floor areas and interior architecture with a powerful dark lead player. Combined with warm timber (oak, walnut), brushed brass, Corten steel, black steel and deeper natural tones, the stone develops a luxurious, somewhat mysterious atmosphere.

For anyone comparing Nordic Sunset with other materials: stylistically close are Cosmic Black (a Brazilian migmatite, a similar black-and-light interplay with more fluid veining), Magma Gold (a Brazilian migmatite with a golden warm dominance), Lapponia Black (a Finnish pyroxenite, a very dark uniform ground tone without leucosome patches), Star Galaxy (an Indian gabbro, a very dark black with golden micro-stars) and Nero Assoluto Brazil (a gabbro, evenly black). Anyone looking for a calm, uniform black tone should choose one of the monochrome black stones; anyone who wants dramatic movement and effects of light is better placed with Nordic Sunset or Cosmic Black.
Our honest assessment: Nordic Sunset is an unusually strong material, both in design and in material engineering, for projects with a claim to dark drama, technical robustness and genuine geological character. Anyone who needs a calm, monochrome black surface should reach for a classic black gabbro. But anyone who wants the expressive black-and-light pattern of a Russian migmatite and at the same time the robustness of a high-performance hard rock gets a rare and very convincing combination in Nordic Sunset — not least because high-grade Russian migmatites are more rarely seen on the European market than their Brazilian or Indian competitors.
