Ombra di Caravaggio lives on contrast. Dark browns and greys meet pale, in places almost white veins and cloudy transitions, so that every slab works like a painted picture. The stone goes well with warm metals, dark timber and calm, matt surfaces. The stone comes from Serbia, from the Zlatibor area. Petrographically it is a limestone; in the market, however, Ombra di Caravaggio is traded as a marble and is also fabricated as one. That is not unusual in the natural stone trade: what is decisive is less the scientific designation than the actual character, polishability and logic of use. Ombra di Caravaggio thereby stands in the family of the decorative, polishable marbles with a strong picture.
Technically the material is respectably set up for a decorative interior fit-out stone. The bulk density is around 2,708 kg/m³, the water absorption a very low 0.062 % and the flexural strength around 15.11 MPa. The compressive strength is placed in the range of around 120 to 150 MPa. That speaks for a dense and load-bearing stone, but changes nothing about the basic principle: against acid it remains sensitive, like practically every calcite-bound marble. For kitchens and heavily used counters, honest planning therefore matters more than any beautiful photograph.

Polishing is the most classic finish for marble and limestone — a glossy surface with the highest possible colour intensity and a pronounced depth to the veining. Depending on the mineral composition, the effect can be matte-gloss in places. Acid-sensitive — wine, lemon and vinegar leave etch marks after prolonged contact.
Care & fabrication
Ombra di Caravaggio should be cleaned and cared for regularly without attacking the calcite-bound surface. A good impregnation before use is recommendable, especially in the bathroom, kitchen and on tables. Clean with pH-neutral stone cleaners and remove acidic splashes immediately.
